5 Getting Started with Signage Suite Signage Suite is easy to use for informative presentations. It is made up of Program Works for creating the layout, and Schedule Works for collecting presentations, assigning devices, and uploading the content. Most things can be done by dragging the files into place. See below for features, system requirements, and a quick start guide. Features System Requirements Quick Guide 1

6 Getting Started with Signage Suite Features Intuitive screen layout for easy use. Default templates for quick starting. Customizable layout settings for position, size, and other options. Drag-and-drop to and from the Library Window. Add Groups to organize files in the Library Window. Preview programs before sending them to the Scheduler. Search for files or programs by comments, file name, or date modified. Programs from Program Works can be automatically seen in Schedule Works after they are saved. Make weekly schedules by using drag-and-drop operations and to set a program to the entire week. Save energy by setting VGA Off when no schedule is set. Schedule Works can control the uploading of scheduled programs from a storage device to a player. Upload contents at set times by using reserved schedule. Schedule Works automatically detects players that are connected to the network. System Requirements Operating System: Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 CPU and memory must meet the minimum requirements to run the operating system. For details, please refer to the relevant Microsoft website. Display: SVGA (800 x 600) or better. A minimum of 50 MB free hard disk space for installing Program Works and Schedule Works. (Additional space is required for the storage of content.) 2

7 Getting Started with Signage Suite Quick Guide Here are some useful quick-start procedures. Step 1. From the Template bar, click on a template. If your template is not visible, click Open Layout from the File menu and choose the layout from your storage device. Step 2. If the Template bar is not shown, select Show Template Bar from the View menu. Drag objects from the Library into the blocks. You can drag only matching items. (Video file to Video block, image file to Image block, etc.) Step 3. After the presentation is put together, save it as a program. Then, open Schedule Works by clicking the icon on the Toolbar. You can set the days and times for the program to play. See the Using Schedule Works section for more details. Step 4. Click the Upload Contents to Device icon on the Toolbar. You can add devices to groups and create more groups from the Schedule Works screen. See the Using Schedule Works section for more details. 3

8 Starting Program Works Program Works is the perfect tool for a new generation of digital signage media. You can use images, movies, RSS, URLs, and text to create a modern, professional media board. After finishing your work, you can plan and control the presentation with Schedule Works. Images used in this document are for reference only. They may look slightly different from your program. 9 Starting Program Works Screen Layout Program Works consists of a Main window, where you plan and partition your program; and a Library window that holds your resources in the form of file icons that you can drag onto the Main window. There is also a Template Bar that has ready-made designs for your convenience. The Template Bar and Library Window can be opened or closed from the View menu. Only one video block can be added in one program. Add an image block. Click the arrow on this button, select Image Block, and drag a rectangle in the Main window. Two image blocks can be added in one program. Add a static image block. Click the arrow on this button, select Static Image Block, and drag a rectangle in the Main window. Add a URL block. Click the arrow on this button, select URL Block, and drag a rectangle in the Main window. Only one URL block can be added in one program. 6

Click the arrow on this button, select Text Block, and drag a rectangle in the Main window. Only one text block can be added in one program. Add a static text block. Click the arrow on this button, select Static Block, and drag a rectangle in the Main window. Add a time block. Click this button and drag a rectangle in the Main window. Only one clock block can be added in one program. Add a date block. Click this button and drag a rectangle in the Main window. Only one date block can be added in one program. Make images and text appear larger or smaller. Click the icon to increase magnification by 50%, or click the arrow for a shortcut menu to go to Fit to Window, 50%, 100%, 150% or 200% magnification. Preview the material before sending it to Schedule Works. The preview is in full screen. To stop the preview, press ESC. 7

12 Starting Program Works Open Schedule Works Open Schedule Works to plan the media presentation. Template Bar This area shows templates that you can use for comparing, modifying, and selecting. To find more templates, use the Open Layout command from the File menu. Library Window The Library window is the place where you can find the material for your layout. It has the following tabs: Video, Images, URL, RSS, and Text. Click the tabs,, on the Toolbar to switch. To import files from a personal computer, drag items directly into the Library window from the file explorer on the computer. Click Add Folder to make folders for the Library. Click Add Files to browse the hard drive for more files. Click Comments to add notes and reminders. Click Search to either look up information by file name or to seek data in the comments. You can also Delete, Cut, Copy, Paste, and Rename Library window items from the shortcut menu. 8

13 Starting Program Works Main Window On the Main window, you can lay out blocks, insert content and organize your signage program. Right-click on any block to adjust the settings and attributes. You can drag only matching items into the corresponding block. (For example, video to Video block, image file to Image block.) Getting Started Program Works is designed to be quick and easy, advanced options that allow you to make detailed settings. Look at these topics for more details. Do one of the following: Click on the toolbar, and create it from the scratch. Set the options in the Layout Settings dialog box. Then, click one of the Add buttons on the toolbar and drag to create a block in the Main window. After that, assign a file from the Library window to the block. Click on the toolbar, select an existing program and make changes. Select a template from the Template bar and import objects into each block. 9

14 Starting Program Works Importing Files into the Library Window To import files into the Library window, do one of the following: From the Edit menu, click Preferences and select the path. The selected folder will be set as a library. All the files in the folder will be shown in the corresponding Library. Click to change the path. Open the browser and drag the files into the Library. The imported files will be copied into the path selected in the Preferences. Adding or Grouping the Files in the Library Window To manipulate the files in the Library Window, right-click on the Library Window and select one of the following commands. Add Folder: Add a folder in the current library. The folder icon will be shown as a new folder. Click the name of the folder and change it. To add files to a folder, drag the files to the folder or copy and paste them. Delete Folder: Delete the folder together with the files in the folder. Add Files: Add files to the current library. Browse the folder in a dialog box and select a file. You can select multiple files by holding the Shift key. Delete Files: Delete a file. You can select multiple files by holding the Shift key. Cut: Cut a selected file. You can select multiple files by holding the Shift key. Copy: Copy a selected file. You can select multiple files by holding the Shift key. Paste: Paste the copied file to the displayed group. Rename: Click here to change the selected folder name or file name. Comments: Add comments to the file or folder. Open the dialog box and type the comments. The comment text can be searched later on. The maximum length of comments is 50 characters. Search: Search the files or folders. Open the dialog box and enter a file name, comment, or date modified. The search results will be shown on the search tab. 10

15 Starting Program Works Setting the Layout When you create a new program by clicking on the toolbar, the Layout Settings dialog box will open. In this dialog box, you can set layout options for Screen Resolution, Orientation, and Background Color. You can also click to insert a Background Image and Background Music. Alternatively, you can open this dialog box by clicking on the toolbar. Click at the Background Music to open the playlist. You can add, delete or change / the sequence of the audio files. Use the drop-down menu to change the playing style to sequential or random. You can also adjust the volume. Click OK to apply the settings and close the dialog box. Click Cancel to quit the settings. Animated GIF files can be used for background images. Changing Block Attributes You can set file attributes for each block. Right-click on the block and select Block Attributes to open the dialog box. Depending on the type of block, different settings will be available. Also, you can add, delete or change / the sequence of video files. See below for each option. Only one video block can be added in one program. Position Size Play Mode Fit Mode Align Enter the X and Y coordinates of the top left corner of the block. Enter the width and height for the block. Choose how the item will be displayed: in sequence or randomly. Choose to keep aspect ratio. Organize the content to the upper left, lower left, center upper right, or lower right. 12

17 Starting Program Works Volume Set the sound level. Image Block In this dialog box, you can adjust the X and Y position, size, play mode, time, fit mode, alignment, and across mode. Also, you can add, delete or change / the sequence of image files. See below for each option. At most two image blocks can be added in one program. Position Size Play Mode Time Total playing time Fit Mode Enter the X and Y coordinates of the top left corner of the block. Enter the width and height for the block. Choose how the item will be displayed: in sequence or randomly. Enter the time for playing the image. See the total time for playing the image. Choose whether or not to retain the aspect ratio. 13

18 Starting Program Works Align Across Mode Organize the contents to the upper left, lower left, center upper right, or lower right. You can select a transition styles for images. Static Image Block In this dialog box, you can adjust the X and Y position, size, fit mode, and alignment. Also, you can click to add image files. See below for each option. Position Size Fit Mode Align Enter the X and Y coordinates of the top left corner of the block. Enter the width and height for the block. Choose whether or not to retain the aspect ratio. Organize the contents to the upper left, lower left, center upper right, or lower right. URL Block In this dialog box, you can adjust the X and Y position, size, URLs, and update intervals. Also, you can add, delete or change / the sequence of URLs. See below for each option. Only one URL block can be selected for a program. 14

19 Starting Program Works Position Size File Updated Interval Enter the X and Y coordinates of the top left corner of the block. Enter the width and height for the block. Choose a URL here. URLs typed in the message box or added with the button will be shown in the drop down list for you to choose from. You can choose how often, in minutes, to refresh the contents. Widget Block In this dialog box, you can adjust the X and Y position, and size. Also, you can add some widget code here. See below for each option. Only one widget block can be added in one program. 15

20 Starting Program Works Position Size Enter the X and Y coordinates of the top left corner of the block. Enter the width and height for the block. RSS Block In this dialog box, you can adjust the X and Y position, size, URL, text color, background color, transparency, font type, style, size, speed (1 for the fastest, 5 for the slowest), mode, and update interval. Also, you can add, delete or change / the sequence of RSS feeds. See below for each option. Only one RSS block can be added in one program. 16

Choose a RSS feed address here. Addresses typed in the message box or added with the button will be shown in the drop down list for you to choose from. Choose the color of the text. Make it exciting and appealing. Choose the color of the background. Choose to make the background transparent. 17

22 Starting Program Works Font Align Style Size Speed Mode Direction Update Interval Choose normal, sans serif, or serif. Choose where to align the text within the box. Choose normal, bold, or italic. Choose font size. Change the speed of the text crawl from 1 to 5. 5 is the slowest. Choose Marquee, Line Text or Vertical Text. Marquee will scroll across, Line Text will be shown horizontally, and Vertical Text will be shown vertically. If you chose Marquee mode, then you can have the text scroll right to left, or from the left to the right. You can choose how often, in minutes, to refresh the contents. Text Block In this dialog box, you can adjust the X and Y position, size, text file, text color, background color, transparency, font type, alignment, style, size, speed (1 for the fastest, 5 for the slowest), mode and direction. Also, you can add, delete or change / the sequence of text files. See below for each option. Only one text block can be added in one program. 18

Choose a text file here. Text files will play in sequence and you can edit the selected text file in the text window. Add more files with the button. Choose the color of the text. Make it exciting and appealing. Choose the color of the background. Choose to make the background transparent. Choose normal, sans serif, or serif. 19

24 Starting Program Works Align Style Size Speed Mode Direction Choose where to align the text within the box. Choose normal, bold, or italic. Choose font size. Change the speed of the text crawl from 1 to 5. 5 is the slowest. Choose Marquee, Line Text or Vertical Text. 26 Starting Program Works Position Size Type Color Size Enter the X and Y coordinates of the top left corner of the block. Enter the width and height for the block. Choose Digital or Analog. For the Digital type of clock, choose the color for the numbers. For the Digital type of clock, choose the size of the displayed numbers. Date Block In this dialog box, you can adjust the X and Y position, size, date format, color and size. See below for each option. Only one date block can be added in one program. Position Size Enter the X and Y coordinates of the top left corner of the block. Enter the width and height for the block. 22

27 Starting Program Works Format Color Size Choose the preferred method of date representation. Choose the color for the date. Choose the size of the displayed date. Using the Screen Menu Right-click on the inserted block to see the following commands. Bring Up: If there are multiple objects in the block, bring it up to the foreground one level. Bring Down: If there are multiple objects, bring it down one level to the background. Edit: Edit the block attributes. Save: Save the current settings. Clear All: Remove all files in the block. Remove Block: Remove the block. Block Attributes...: Open the dialog box to set the block attributes. Options will vary depending on the type of block. Setting the Preferences In the Preferences dialog box, you can set the location of your source files. The default has been set to the sample files location. You can select a different location for each block type (Video, Image, Text, URL, and RSS). Select a language from the Language Settings list box. To change locations, click Preferences on the Edit menu, click to browse for a location, and then click OK to apply the settings and close the dialog box, or click Cancel to leave the settings alone. 23

Edit Menu Undo [Ctrl+Z] Redo [Ctrl+Y] Layout Settings... [Ctrl+A] Undoes the last operation. Repeats the last operation that was undone. Opens a dialog box to set layout options for Screen Resolution, Backlight, and Background Color. You can also click to insert a Background Image and Background Music. Click OK to apply the settings and close the dialog box. Click Cancel to quit the settings. 24

Clock Block [Ctrl+J] Date Block [Ctrl+Q] Add a time block in the layout. Select this option and drag a rectangle on the working area. A time block will be inserted. Add a date block in the layout. 30 Starting Program Works Block Attributes... [Ctrl+F] Comments... [Ctrl+M] Preferences... Change selected block attributes. Click a block in the working area and click this option. See the Changing Block Attributes section for more details. Opens a dialog box to enter comments for the selected item. Opens a dialog box to set the path for saving files. You can select a different location for each block type. (Video, Image, Text, URL, and RSS) Select a language from the Language Settings list box. View Menu Show Grid [Ctrl+G] Shows or hides a grid on the Main Working area. Show/Hide Template Bar [Ctrl+D] Shows or hides the Template Bar. Show/Hide Library Window [Ctrl+W] Shows or hides the Library Window. Help Menu Auto Update Check for Updates Live Update About Program Works... Apply any available updates automatically. To deselect this option, click this option again to remove the check mark. Click to see if there are updates available. If you wish to check for and apply updates automatically, click Auto Update. Connects to the NewSoft website for updated information. Shows copyright information and software version. 26

31 Using Schedule Works Schedule Works is a calendar-based application for making weekly schedules. This is where you upload scheduled programming from a storage device or to a player. By creating a group, you can upload to several players at once. Use the log to check the uploading status. 33 Using Schedule Works Toolbar These icons represent important commands that can also be found on the File menu. They are placed here for your convenience. Open Schedule Save Schedule Open a previously saved Schedule. Save the current Schedule together with device and group settings. Sends the scheduled programs to a specified device. Export to Device Upload Contents to Device FTP Upload Zoom In/Zoom Out Search To play the content of a directory from a device like a USB, you must first create a folder, name it digisigncontent, and then copy the media files into it. Sends the scheduled programs to specified players. Upload a program through FTP. Zoom in or zoom out the calendar. Click the icon to increase magnification by 50%, or click the arrow for a shortcut menu to go to Fit to Window, 50%, 100%, 150%, 200%, 400%, 800% or 1600% magnification. Select the ratio from the list. Search for all available online players. 29

34 Using Schedule Works Controller Show vital player information. Reserved Management Manage the uploaded information for the reserved schedule. You can view, delete, or modify it. Group Window This area shows the folders for players and groups. Right-click on a blank area to add a group, or right-click on a folder to rename the folder, remove it, or add a device. You can also copy a weekly schedule and paste it to other players or groups. Program Library After a layout is saved in Program Works, it will be available to Schedule Works as a program. All programs with content will be displayed. Right-click a program to add it to the entire schedule or add some comments to the program. Right-click anywhere in the Library to search. You can preview a program by double-clicking it or right-clicking it and selecting Preview. Press ESC to return to Schedule Works. Programs can be dragged to the calendar to be scheduled in a presentation. Player List All online players are shown as thumbnail icons. They will be detected automatically by Schedule Works. You can drag a player to the Group Window, and a new group will be created automatically with the player inside, or drag it into an existing group. To add offline players, right-click on the player list and click Add Device to open a dialog box, type the name, serial number, and IP address of the player, and then click Add to include it in the list. Right-click on the player list and select Sort to arrange the players by name or IP address. You can also right-click on an offline player and select Wake On LAN to turn on the device. (A network connection is required.) 30

35 Using Schedule Works Calendar Click a player on the Group Window; the player list will switch to the Calendar. On the Calendar, you can fill in blocks of time with the various programs that you would like to have play. You can choose to show the calendar by week or by month. Status Bar The Status Bar displays information about the current schedule and its contents. Scheduling and Uploading Content A player, also known as a device, is a computer or a stand-alone device to run the scheduled signage. Before the signage can be displayed, the program must be uploaded to the player. Follow these steps to get your messages out to the public. Adding a Group Adding Devices Scheduling Programs Exporting or Uploading Content Adding a Group Drag a player from Player List to Group Window. A new group will be created automatically. Alternatively, right-click an empty space on the Group Window and select New Group from the menu. A group will be added to the list and you can type the name over the default name. Adding Devices Drag a player from Player List. Alternatively, right-click a folder on the Group Window, and select Add Device to open a dialog box, type the name, serial number, IP address, and port of the player, and then click Add and it will be put into the list. Click OK to close the dialog box. To remove devices, right-click on a device in the Group Window and select Delete Device from the menu. 31

36 Using Schedule Works Scheduling Programs All online players are shown as thumbnail icons. You can drag a player to the Group Window, and a new group will be created automatically with the player inside, or drag it into an existing group. 32

37 Using Schedule Works Click on the player on the group list, player list will be changed to Calendar. Drag a program from the Program Library to the specified date on the calendar. Alternatively, you can apply a program to the whole week by right-clicking on the program and selecting Apply to All. Each program will be assigned a different color. Click on the beginning or end of a time period and drag to adjust it. Or if there is unused space before or after the scheduled period, you can drag it up or down to adjust the time as a block. Alternatively, right-click the inserted program and select Settings. Then, specify the time in the dialog box. Note that there must be at least 15 seconds between the start and end times. In the Settings dialog box, you can also add notes, change color, specify a device, and repeat settings. To copy a one-day schedule, right-click on the day and select Copy, and then you can select Paste to apply it to another day. To remove the schedule, right-click on the inserted program and select Clear. You can also click Clear or Clear All from the Edit menu. 33

38 Using Schedule Works Exporting or Uploading Content Once you have added groups, added players, and made schedules; you can upload the content to the players in the group folder or device. Do one of the following: Click on the toolbar to export the scheduled content to the storage device. A progress bar will let you see the upload being accomplished. Click on the toolbar to start uploading the scheduled content to the player. A progress bar will let you see the upload being accomplished. Click on the toolbar or select FTP Upload from the File menu to start uploading the scheduled content through FTP. A progress bar will let you see the upload being accomplished. Setting the Property Controller Right-click on a device and select Controller to set the following options. Status Tab Controller Tab Version Tab Status Tab The Status tab will let you see how the player is presently performing. Take a snapshot by clicking the Snapshot button. You will see an image of the screen so you can check on the status of your presentation. The image will be saved in the JPEG format. Click OK to close the dialog box. 34

39 Using Schedule Works Controller Tab Restart: Set a time to restart with one of following options, and then click Go. Click Now to restart immediately. Select a date by clicking /, select a time by clicking / to adjust the hours and minutes. Type a number of the minutes in the min after field. Restart will occur after the specified number of minutes from the time you click Go. Message: Enter a message for remote display, and then click Send. Click Stop to end the current message. Click Stop Current Program to display the message while the program is not being played. Volume: Set the sound level. Standby: Select Wakeup to activate the player. Select Sleep to have it go into standby mode. 35

40 Using Schedule Works Play: Use this setting to play an irregular program or stop a regular program. Do one of the following: Select a program from the list of programs in the SD card, type the number for playing time, and then click Play. After the specified time the regular program will return. Click Stop to quit playing the regular program. The screen will go black. Clear SD Content: Click Go to erase the SD card. Log: click Select and specify a location to save the playing record. Version Tab This tab shows the System, APK, and Protocol version. 36

41 Using Schedule Works Setting the Preferences The Preferences dialog box has three tabs: General Settings, Upload Settings, and Connection Settings. 1. In the General Settings tab, you can make the following settings. Select the location of your Program source files. The default has been set to the sample program file folder. When The screen auto off while there is no program being set is selected, the screen will be automatically shut down while no schedule is set. If Copy to SD card first is selected, the file will be sent to the SD card before being played. Select a language from the Language Settings list box. 37

42 Using Schedule Works Set a password to assure security. The original password is NewSoft. 2. In the Upload Settings tab, you can make the following settings. Type the number of times to retry when uploading content. Set the device status as Shut down, Sleep, or Keep after uploading. Click Export to export the uploading records. 3. In the Connection Settings tab, you can make the following settings. Type the number of seconds in the Timeout Settings box. The searching time will last for the seconds you put here. Enter the number of seconds to search from the beginning to the end or from the end to the beginning. Enter a connection port. 38

43 Using Schedule Works Menu Commands Here is a list and short explanation of all the commands in the Schedule Works menus. For some, equivalent options can be found on the Toolbar. File Menu Edit Menu Help Menu Screen Menus File Menu Open... [Ctrl+O] Save... [Ctrl+S] Save As Export [Ctrl+E] Upload contents to device [Ctrl+U] FTP Upload [Ctrl+T] Exit Opens a program. Saves the current program. Saves your current program with the file name and location you specify. Sends the scheduled programs to a specified device. To play the content of a directory from a device like a USB, you must first create a folder, name it digisigncontent, and then copy the media files into it. Sends the program to a specified device. This command will be available if you have configured an FTP site. Click to upload a program through FTP. Closes the program. 39

44 Using Schedule Works Edit Menu Clear [Del] Clear All Search Results [Ctrl+R] Preferences... Clears selected schedules. Clears all the schedules. Toggles the display between Search Results and the Program Library. Open the Preferences dialog box, and make changes to the settings. For details, please refer to Setting the Preferences. FTP Settings... You can configure the FTP transfer for large files. Delete Packages... Use this command to delete packages being uploaded through FTP. Help Menu Auto Update Check for Updates Live Update About Schedule Works... Apply any available updates automatically. To deselect this option, click this option again to remove the check mark. Click to see if there are updates available. If you wish to check for and apply updates automatically, Click Auto Update. Connects to the NewSoft website for updated information. Shows copyright information and software version. 40

45 Using Schedule Works Screen Menus These menus will pop up if you right click in the window. Some items might not be available, depending on whether you right-click an item or an empty space in the window. Group Window Program Library Group Window New Group: Right-click on a group folder or an empty space and select New Group to add a group. Type a name for the group. After adding the group, you can drag players to the group. Delete Group: Remove the group and its contents. Add Device : Add a player to the group by its name, serial number, and IP address. Delete Device: Right-click on a player folder, select Delete Device, and click OK to delete the player, or click Cancel to not do anything. Serial Number: Open a dialog box to type a serial number. The serial number can be used to protect against illegal copying. Upload contents to device: Open a dialog box to type a password. Click to send the scheduled programs to the device. A progress bar will display while the transmission is going on. FTP Upload: Click to upload a program through FTP. Controller...: Open a dialog box to type a password. Click to see vital player information. Reserved Schedule: Click to upload content at set times. Rename: Right-click on a player folder and select Rename, and then type over the existing name. Refresh: Get the latest status of the group content. Copy a weekly schedule: Copy a weekly schedule from a group or player. Paste a weekly schedule: Paste a weekly schedule to other groups or players. 41

46 Using Schedule Works Program Library Apply to All: The selected program will be applied to the whole week. Comments: Add comments to the program. Open the dialog box and type the comments. You can use the input value for searching. The maximum size of the comments is 50 characters. Search: Search file name, comments or date modified. Enter the search terms and the results will be shown in the Search Results window. Rightclick and select Program Library to return to the Program Library window. Search Results / Program Library: This will toggle the display between the Search Results window and the Program Library. Preview: Double-click or right-click on a program and select Preview to preview it. Press ESC to return to Schedule Works. 42
