4 Introduction What is Charlie Chimp s Big Modelling Party? Charlie Chimp s Big Modelling Party is a multimedia program from Sherston. It includes seven exciting activities that cover aspects of modelling and problem-solving. Each activity has three levels of difficulty. are complete, the guests arrive to join the party and watch the magnificent firework and music display that the pupils have created. Activity Mode. Each activity can be worked on in isolation to the others. This allows pupils to focus closely on specific skills. Educational Objectives Develops modelling, problem-solving, decision-making, ordering, and classification skills. Introduces simple Logo. Helps improve mouse skills and dexterity. Develops spatial awareness. Enables pupils to develop, review and refine a multimedia piece. Develops an awareness of changing variables to see what if. The Two Modes of Use This program can be used as a motivating adventure or as a bank of focused stand-alone activities. Adventure Mode. The adventure is set on a Caribbean island. Charlie Chimp is planning his annual party and needs help dealing with the preparations. Each stage of the adventure requires pupils to use their skills to solve a different modelling challenge and tests their predictions as they work their way to the finale. Windows PC Users Charlie Chimp s Big Modelling Party can be used in three different ways: By running directly from the CD-ROM By installing on a single computer By installing on a computer network Please note: you must ensure that the number of machines you use Charlie Chimp s Big Modelling Party on matches the licence you have purchased. Please contact Sherston for further details if necessary ( ). If you have evaluated the software on Sherston s 28-day free approval scheme, and have decided not to keep it, you must remove all installations of the program. Running the software directly from the CD-ROM Place the CD-ROM in the relevant drive on your computer, the CD window should open automatically, otherwise you should open it from within My Computer. Double-click on the Charlie Chimp s Big Party icon to start the program. Installing the software on a computer network Installing Charlie Chimp s Big Modelling Party on a computer network means that the CD will not be required for future use of the software. To install the software on your network, doubleclick on the Network Setup icon. After reading the copyright information on the Welcome screen you will be asked to select the following: Installation location click the Browse button to choose the drive and folder you wish to use. You can create a new folder by simply adding a folder name to the end of the destination path. All users must have read access permission for the files in this location. Program folder this is the folder in which the program icons are installed. If you have evaluated Charlie Chimp s Big Modelling Party on your network as part of Sherston s 28-day free approval scheme, and have decided not to keep the software, you must ensure that all installations of the software are removed before returning the software. Installing the software on a single machine For full functionality, install Charlie Chimp s Big Modelling Party by double-clicking on the Setup icon and follow the on-screen instructions. Default installation will add Charlie Chimp s Big Modelling Party to your Programs menu in the location, Start>Programs>Sherston>Charlie Chimp s Big Party. The installed version will still require the CD-ROM to be in the drive during use. 6 7

Click the Select Folder button if you want to change the installation location. Click the Install button to install to the location specified. Click the Quit button when installation has finished. Default installation will create a shortcut on the desktop. The installed version will still require the CD-ROM to be in the drive during use. 8 9
7 Installing the software on a computer network Installing Charlie Chimp s Big Modelling Party on a computer network means that the CD will not be required for future use of the software. To install the software on your network, doubleclick on the Network Install icon (on OS 10.2 or later, doubleclick on the Network Install - OSX icon). You will now be able to select destination for the following: Program location - contains application files and data. Click the Select Folder button to change the destination. All users must have read access permissions to run the files in this location. If you have evaluated Charlie Chimp s Big Modelling Party on your network as part of Sherston s 28-day free approval scheme, and have decided not to keep the software, you must ensure that all installations of the software are removed before returning the software. 8 How do I use Charlie Chimp s Big Modelling Party? Main Menu Charlie Chimp s Big Modelling Party opens with a short introductory sequence. Click on the screen at any time to skip the introductory screen. Click on the Start button to take you to the Main Menu. From here you have a choice of three buttons: Start an Activity or Start the Adventure takes you to the Activity Menu screen. Teacher Options takes you to the Teacher Options screen. Note: if the Teacher Control Password is activated, type the password in the box that appears. The default password is control (case sensitive). Quit. Starting an Activity or Starting the Adventure You can access the teaching activities from the menus on these pages. The default is Start an Activity. See page 15 for an explanation of the individual activities. Start an Activity Seven activities are available, although you can choose to make any of them unavailable to particular pupils. Pupils can access the activities in any order. Start the Adventure Seven activities are available. Pupils can access them in any order. To help motivate pupils, animations begin and end the adventure. Teacher Options From these pages, you can perform the following tasks: Activate or deactivate teacher control password Click on or off in the Teacher control password box. The default password is control (case sensitive). Change sound level Click the up and down arrows in the Sound level scale. Change difficulty level Click Level 1 (easiest), Level 2 (harder), Level 3 (hardest) in the Difficulty level box. The default is Level
9 Select mode Click Adventure or Activity in the Game mode box. Select activities available in Activity mode Click the names of individual activities in the Select which activities to include box (only available when Activity mode is selected). View information about individual activities Click arrow in the Information on activities box. The Activity Information screen appears. Highlight names of individual activities to view information. Click the Return to Teacher Options button to return to the Teacher Options screen. Return to main menu Click Return to main menu button. The Activities Whether you prefer to use this program in the Activity mode or Adventure mode, individual activities can be introduced to the whole class using a large monitor, whiteboard or projector. In this way you can show your pupils how to tackle each challenge. Pupils can then work on the activities individually, or in pairs. Many of these activities also lend themselves to a whole class or large group approach. Over the next eight pages is information about each of the activities included in Charlie Chimp s Big Modelling Party. Each summary includes: A brief description of the task. The educational objectives of the activity. The contents of each of the three levels of difficulty. A step-by-step guide on how to solve the task. Quitting the program You can exit an activity by holding down Ctrl and pressing the Q key on your keyboard. A list of options will appear on your screen and you will be asked to confirm your choice. Note: Apple Mac users will need to use the Apple key. An image from the activity. Note: Pressing the Ctrl-Q combination on your keyboard will return you to the Main Menu
10 The Sweet Shack In Brief: Drag tiles onto the grid in order to create a route for the sweets to travel down. This activity develops modelling, problem solving skills and spatial awareness. Where is Charlie? In Brief: Select pieces of an image and then drag and drop them into place to create simple pictures of Charlie and his home. This activity develops modelling, problem-solving skills and spatial awareness. Level 1: Six different tiles available. Level 2: Six different tiles and more complex shapes. Level 3: Three tiles that can be rotated and an extra tile that alternates the exit route of the sweet. How to solve it: 1. Choose a tile from the selection on the left of the screen. 2. Click on the tile you want and drag and drop it onto the grid. 3. Continue doing this until you have created a route from the top of the machine down to the mouth of the sweet bag. 4. When you have completed the route, click on the arrows at the top left of the screen and fire two sweets into the machine. This will fill the party bag with sweets. 5. The party bag will now move and you will need to rearrange the tiles to create another route for the remaining sweets to travel down. 16 Level 1: Four pieces per puzzle. Pieces only stay in place if correct. Three pictures presented; the first two have outline sketches to help. Level 2: Nine pieces per puzzle. Pieces only stay in place if correct. Three pictures presented; the first two have outline sketches to help. Level 3: Nine pieces per puzzle. Pieces will stay in any position. No outline sketches. How to solve it: 1. Select a piece from the left of the screen by clicking on it. 2. Drag and drop it onto the image on the right. 3. Repeat until you create a complete picture of Charlie s house. 4. Another image will then appear. Complete this image in the same way. 5. When complete, you will need to find Charlie and click on him. 6. The final task requires you to piece together an image of Charlie. 17
11 Bertie Bat s House In Brief: Move the lifts up and down to help Charlie reach the exit of the bamboo maze. This activity develops modelling, problem-solving skills and spatial awareness. Charlie s Deliveries In Brief: Help Charlie to deliver his invitations using simple Logo instructions. This activity introduces simple Logo in a problem-solving situation. Level 1: Three screens presented. Screen one has one lift. Other screens have two each. Level 2: Three screens presented. Up to six lifts presented. Level 3: Three screens presented. Up to six lifts presented. Time delay caused by trapping Charlie required. How to solve it: 1. As Charlie walks through the maze there are a number of lifts that need to be moved in order for him to continue. 2. If Charlie needs to move down with one of the lifts, click on the down arrow when he is standing on the lift platform. 3. If he needs to move up with the lift, click on the up arrow when he is standing on the lift platform. 4. Continue to move the lifts in the correct direction until Charlie has exited the maze. Level 1: Few obstructions to navigate around. Four directional tiles available. Individual instructions input. Level 2: More obstructions than Level 1. Four directional tiles available plus a forward two spaces tile. Individual instructions input. Level 3: More obstructions than Level 2. Four directional tiles available plus a forward two spaces tile. The whole program needs to be built before running. How to solve it: 1. Each of the pieces to the right of the map represents a direction/action. They are called directional tiles. 2. Select the direction you want Charlie to travel in by clicking on one of these tiles. The tile will then drop into the action line. Charlie will move according to the instruction you give him. 3. Direct Charlie to his friend s house. When he arrives there he will deliver his invitation
12 Dressing Charlie Chimp In Brief: Drag and drop clothes onto Charlie so that he is suitably dressed for a range of specified activities. This activity develops ordering, decision-making and classification skills within a modelling situation. Level 1: All the clothes required are in one cupboard. Clothes must be put on in the correct order. Level 2: Clothes are in four cupboards. Decoy items are presented which are clearly wrong. Level 3: Clothes are in five cupboards. Decoy items are presented which are clearly wrong. How to solve it: 1. Open one of the cupboards by clicking on it. Inside will be a selection of clothing. 2. Click on the item you want Charlie to wear and drag and drop it onto him. If it is the correct item, it will stay on Charlie. If it isn t, it will move back into the cupboard and you must select another piece. 3. When you have finished with the cupboard, select another by clicking on it. 4. When he has a complete outfit, Charlie will appear on the screen enjoying the activity you dressed him for. The Party Game In Brief: Fire the ball from the see-saw, over the tower, to land on Sadie Seal s nose. Experiment to work out which elephant to use. This activity introduces modelling and develops an awareness of changing variables to see what if Level 1: Four elephants presented in size order. Different sized balls presented. Level 2: Four elephants presented in any order. Ball is always the same size. Level 3: Five elephants presented in any order. Ball is always the same size. How to solve it: 1. Select an elephant to jump off the tower by clicking on it. 2. If it is the correct elephant, the ball will land on Sadie s nose. If it is not correct, the ball will miss and you will need to choose another elephant. 3. If the ball travelled too far, you will need to try a smaller elephant and vice-versa
13 Magical Fireworks In Brief: Compose a piece of music and create a fireworks display to end the party. This activity involves manipulating a range of musical phrases by dragging and dropping, refining and adapting the composition to suit the pupil s own display. Level 1: Create one music line. Choose from fifteen musical pieces. Level 2: Add music to the music line from five themed music areas. Add fireworks to the firework line. Repeat option available. Level 3: Add music to the two music lines from the five themed music areas. Add fireworks to the firework line. Repeat option available. 5. Listen to the completed music line by clicking on the triangular button at the end of it. 6. Select the number of times you want the music to repeat by clicking on the repeat icon (Level 2 and 3 only). 7. Now complete the firework line. Select this line by clicking on the firework icon. 8. Select the fireworks you want in your display by dragging and dropping them into the firework line. 9. When this line is full you can watch the display accompanied by the music you have created by clicking on the Test the Show button. How to solve it: 1. Select the type of instrument you want by clicking on one of the instrument icons. 2. Five numbered tiles will appear. These represent five different pieces of music. 3. Click on the triangular button at the bottom right of each of the tiles to listen to the music. 4. Click on a tile and drag and drop it into one of the spaces on the music line. Keep doing this until the line is full
14 Technical Information and Tips Sherston has built its reputation on the quality of its software and support, and is always happy to advise users on any aspects of its software and the computers used to run it. The following information is provided purely as a useful reference to common aspects of our software. If you would prefer to discuss any problems you may have, please call us. Our Technical HelpDesk is open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please call Running the program without the CD It is possible to install the entire contents of Charlie Chimp s Big Modelling Party on to your hard drive. To do this you will need to run the Network Install file on the CD. When prompted for the destinations of the data and saves folders etc, ensure that you specify folders on your local hard drive as the location. After installation is complete, you will find that the software will run without the CD in the drive. Note: You are not permitted to do this if viewing the software on approval. You must also ensure that you do not break the licensing agreement by exceeding the number of licences you own. Always be sure to check your licensing agreement. Sound clipping, incomplete sentences or corrupt sound If you experience corrupt or distorted sound, try the following: Select Start>Settings>Control Panel Select the Sounds and Multimedia icon (on some systems this will be called Multimedia) Select the Audio tab Click the Advanced button on the Sound Playback section Select the Performance tab Now set the Hardware acceleration to None and the Sample rate conversion quality to the middle setting. Note: You may require slightly different settings to these, so some experimentation may be required. Click Apply then OK Run the program to see if you have sound If you need any further help, please contact Sherston: Technical HelpDesk: support@sherston.co.uk Sound problems on Windows PCs No sound coming from Charlie Chimp s Big Modelling Party First confirm that sound is working on other software you may own. If not, you should check the sound is enabled and that the volume is set appropriately on your computer and speakers
