You may transfer the Software to a single hard disk and retain the original Software as backup. You must reproduce in full and include any copyright, trademark notices, proprietary data and other legends and logos appearing on the Software on the Backup Copy. OWNERSHIP OF SOFTWARE Title to the Software is not transferred to you by this license. 9 1 INTRODUCTION AND INSTALLATION 1 Features The BT2600 software emulates HP's 2600 display terminals and provides full support of the legacy display with the addition of enhanced features to improve performance, visibility, and ease-of-use. The terminal emulator solution enables HP1000 computer users to replace their obsolete HP display terminals with standard VGA monitors running on a PC with Windows XP or Windows The BT2600 software emulates the following models: 2621A 2622A 2624A 2645A The BT2600G software contains all the features of the BT2600 software, but also includes emulation of the HP2648A Graphics Terminal. The guide includes information on BT2600 features, installation, and use of the software. The BT2600 User's Guide assumes you are familiar with your computer and know how to: Launch an application Open, save, and close files Use menus, dialog boxes, and palettes Use the mouse, keyboard commands, and modifier keys If you need help performing any of these tasks, consult the documentation resources (user or reference guides) provided with your computer. 10 1 INTRODUCTION AND INSTALLATION Installing BT2600 Installing BT Load the BT2600 CD in your CD or DVD drive. 2. The installation wizard of BT2600 starts automatically. If the Installation does not start, go to the drive containing the BT2600 CD and double click on Setup. 3. At the Welcome screen, click Next to continue. 4. At the License Agreement screen, read the license agreement before you proceed. When you have completed reviewing the agreement and if you agree to the terms, click the checkbox next to "I accept the terms in the license agreement" and click Next to continue. 5. At the "Ready to Install the Program" screen, click Install to start the installation of the BT At completion, click Finish to exit. 2 BT2600/BT2600G Terminal Emulator User s Guide

Select Uninstall BT Click Yes when asked "Are you sure you want to uninstall this product?" 5. The uninstall of BT2600 is completed when the program exits. 1. Go to the Control Panel. 2. Run Add or Remove Programs. 3. Select BT2600 from the list of installed application programs and click the Remove button 4. Click Yes when asked "Are you sure you want to uninstall this product? 5. 12 1 INTRODUCTION AND INSTALLATION Getting Started Getting Started 1. Install the BT2600 software on your Windows PC 2. Connect the serial cable from the host computer to port COM1 of your PC. For other ports, refer to the Connection section to configure BT The default port configurations is COM baud 8 data bits 1 stop bit no flow control 4. Double click the BT2600 icon on your desktop to start the BT2600 Terminal Emulator. You can also click on Start/All Programs/Bering Technology/BT2600/BT2600 Terminal Emulation. 4 BT2600/BT2600G Terminal Emulator User s Guide

13 2 CONFIGURING BT Properties The BT2600 Software can be configured to for most installation requirements. To view or change the configuration of BT2600, click File and select Properties to open the Properties dialog box. Note that some of the properties are not changeable while the BT2600 is connected to the host computer. Configuration All the configurations for the BT2600 are stored in a disk file. The configurations include connection, display options, and other emulation information. When the BT2600 is launched, the most recent configuration is used. The file name is shown on the title bar. To change to a different configuration, click File and select Open. A file open dialog box will open. Select a configuration file. The default file extension is.btt. Click open to reconfigure BT2600. You must disconnect to enable the File Open function. To start a new configuration, click File and select New Config. BT2600/BT2600G Terminal Emulator User s Guide 5

14 2 CONFIGURING BT2600 Changing Configuration Changing Configuration To change port connection, customize display color and font, or other configurations: 1. If the port is connected to the host computer, disconnect it by clicking File and select Disconnect. 2. Click File and select Properties to open Properties dialog box. 3. Select one of the tabs (i.e. Connection) and make changes. 4. Click OK to close the dialog box. 5. Click File and select Save to update the current configuration or Save As to a new configuration file on the disk drive. 6. 15 CONFIGURING BT2600 Changing Configuration Connection Select the Connection tab on the Properties dialog box to show the current connection properties. Make sure it is disconnected before making any changes. If it is connected pull down the File menu and click on disconnect. Port: Select one of the available ports listed. Click the down arrow on the right hand side of the list box for options. Default: COM1. Baud Rate: Data transfer rate in bits per second. Select 300, 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, or Default: 9600 baud. BT2600/BT2600G Terminal Emulator User s Guide 7

16 2 CONFIGURING BT2600 Changing Configuration Data Bits: Number of bits per character. Select or 8 bits. Default: 8 bits. Parity: Parity checking per character. Select None, Even, Odd or Mark. Default: None. Stop Bits: Bits between characters. Select 1, 1.5 or 2. Default: 1 Flow Control: Select XON/XOFF, Hardwire or None. Default: None. Emulation Settings Select the Settings tab on the Properties dialog box to show the current emulation properties. You must disconnect before any changes are allowed. If it is connected pull down the File menu and click on disconnect. Emulation: This field shows the model of the HP Terminal being emulated. 17 CONFIGURING BT2600 Changing Configuration Tape Drives: Left/Right Tape: For models 264x, two optional mini cartridge tape drives can be added. The tapes are emulated with standard Window's files. These fields show the default Window's files to be loaded in the tape drives when the BT2600 is launched. Display Setup This function allows you to change the foreground and background colors of the displayed text on the screen. Select the Display Setup tab on the Properties dialog box to show the current display properties. The sample window on the right side of the dialog box shows 2 lines for each of the current font, background, display options. Click the buttons on the left to change available display options. Font: Normal: Background: Only monospaced fonts are supported. Normal display font color. Display background color. BT2600/BT2600G Terminal Emulator User s Guide 9

18 2 CONFIGURING BT2600 Changing Configuration Half Bright: Font color when it is displayed in half bright mode. Inverse Video: Font color when it is displayed with inverse video mode. Inverse Background: Background color for inverse video characters. Default: Revert to program default font and colors. Soft Keys Setup This function allows you to change the foreground and background colors of the soft keys displayed on the bottom of the screen. Select the Soft Keys Setup tab on the Properties dialog box to show the current soft key properties. Label: Background: Active: Key Down: Normal label text color. Label background color. 19 CONFIGURING BT2600 Changing Configuration Default: Reset to default colors. Terminal Setup Select the Terminal Setup tab on the Properties dialog box to show the current settings. Make sure it is disconnected before making any changes. In most cases, no change is required for BT2600 to operate with standard HP software. Return Def: Start Col: Local Echo: Caps Lock: This field shows the definition of the Enter key. Default: ASCII (CR). This field specifies the default logical start-of-text position for MODIFY LINE or MODIFY ALL modes. Default: 1. This check box specifies whether characters entered through the keyboard are both displayed on the screen and transmitted to the host computer. Default: No. This check box specifies whether the BT2600 generates upper case characters only. Default: No. BT2600/BT2600G Terminal Emulator User s Guide 11

20 2 CONFIGURING BT2600 Changing Configuration Inh EOL Wrap: Space Overwrite: Xmit Function: Block Mode: Handshake: This check box specifies whether or not the endof-line wrap is inhibited. This check box specifies whether or not the spaces entered through the keyboard will overwrite existing characters. Default: No. This check box specifies whether escape codes are both executed by the BT2600 and transmitted to the host computer. Default: No. These buttons specifies whether data will be transmitted a line or a page at a time in block mode. Default: Line. Please refer to related HP manuals for more details. Inh Handshake - eliminates the use of the D1 handshake. Default: No. Enq/Ack: Field Separator: Block Terminator: Inh DC2 - eliminates the use of the D1/D2/D1 handshake. Default: No. This check box specifies whether Enq/Ack handshake is used. Default: Yes. This field specifies the character to be transmitted at the end of each protected field in block mode. Please refer to related HP manuals for more details. This field specifies the character to be transmitted at the end of a data transfer under certain circumstances. 21 3 USING BT Display The display consists of the display screen and the display memory. The display screen (page) consists of 24 lines and each line can be either 80 or 144 characters. Up to 100 display pages are maintained in the display memory. Getting Around the Screen Moving the Cursor The following sections refer to cursor movement and basic editing shortcuts. The following keys are used to move the cursor. Move Cursor up one line in the same column position. If the cursor is at the top of the screen, pressing this key moves the cursor to the bottom of the screen in the same column position. Move Cursor down one line in the same column position. If the cursor is at the bottom of the screen, pressing this key moves the cursor to the top of the screen in the same column position. Move Cursor one column to the left. If the cursor is at the left most column of the line, pressing this key moves the cursor to the right most column of the line above. BT2600/BT2600G Terminal Emulator User s Guide 13

If the cursor is at the right most column of the line, pressing this key moves the cursor to the left most column of the line below. Move cursor to the first column of the first line in the display memory Move cursor to first column of the last empty line in the display memory Scrolling Use the scroll bar to scroll up and down 1 line, 1 page, or to any line position in the display memory. Hot Keys: Shift Scroll up 1 line Shift Page Up Page Down Home End Scroll down 1 line Scroll up 1 page Scroll down 1 page First page in the display memory Last page in the display memory Basic Editing Functions These hot key functions are for editing the content of the screen. Hot Keys: Shift Insert Insert a line after current line Shift Delete Alt C Alt V Shift Shift F12 Shift F12 Print Screen Delete the current line Copy Paste Scroll up 1 line Scroll down 1 line Clear line Clear display Print current page Alt Print ScreenPrint all pages in memory Alt 0 9 Grab (copy) selected text to memory slot Function Keys F1-F8 keys on your keyboard are used to emulate the multi-purpose Function Key Group of a HP terminal. The key labels are displayed at the bottom of the display. Move the mouse to the key label and click on it, or press the corresponding F1-F8 key to activate the function. 14 BT2600/BT2600G Terminal Emulator User s Guide

23 USING BT2600 Mode Keys Each activated key is indicated by an asterisk (*). Select Function Keys Use one of the following methods to select one of the available sets of function keys. 1. Press F9 to step through function keys. 2. Click Keys, select Function keys and select one of the listed Keys. Hot Key: F9 Mode Keys LINE MODIFY MODIFY ALL BLOCK MODE REMOTE MODE CLEAR DISPLAY MEMORY LOCK DISPLAY FUNCTNS AUTO LF When set, a line can be modified and transmitted to the host computer by pressing the Enter key. This mode is automatically disabled after the line is transmitted. Same as LINE MODIFY mode except it is not disabled when the Enter key is pressed. When set, data is not transmitted to the host computer immediately as entered. Instead, the entire block of data is transmitted when the ENTER key is pressed. When set, each key pressed is sent to the host computer. Otherwise, it is displayed at the current cursor position. Clears all characters from the current cursor position through the end of the line. Press the shift key with this key to clear all characters from the current cursor position through the end of the display memory. When set, the lines above the cursor become locked on the screen. As the screen becomes full, the locked lines remain on the screen while subsequent lines roll past the locked rows. When set, all control characters are shown on the display. When set, all characters are set to upper case. This overrides the Caps Lock Key on the keyboard. Programming User Keys To program the User Definable Keys, use one of the following methods to open a User Keys Definition dialog box. 1. Press Shift and F9. 2. Click Keys and select Change User Keys. 24 3 USING BT2600 Mode Keys Attribute Field User key attributes to the left of the "LABEL" (L) Executed locally (T) Transmitted to the host computer (N) Treated as alphanumeric keys Label Fields Two 8-character key labels. The field to the right will be displayed as the second line of the function key display. Key Definition Field Below the Label Field, an 80 characters string that is to be displayed, executed, and/or transmitted to the host computer. Click Display Functions box to enable control characters to enter escape sequences. Display Functions When checked, control characters can be entered in the Key Definition Field Default Reset all key definitions to default value as shown above. 25 USING BT2600 Menus Menus File Menu The menu titles across the top of the screen are File, Edit, Modes, Keys, and Help. If you are running BT2600G in 2648A emulation mode, a Graphics menu will also appear. A popup menu appears when you right click anywhere within the terminal screen. The File menu is used for connecting and disconnecting; configuration setting, opening, and saving; printing; importing and capturing text; and changing properties of the display. Connect/Disconnect Click File then select Connect/Disconnect. This command Connects to or Disconnects from the host computer. Each time the host computer is re-connected, the communication port is cleared and reset. All data remaining in the buffer or FIFO is lost. The current connection status is displayed at the top of the window. New Config Open Save This allows you to create a new configuration. The properties window appears with all fields blank or at the lowest value. This should only be used by an experienced user. It is better to modify an existing configuration and save it using the Save As function. Click File then select New Config. This opens an existing configuration file with the file extension of BTT. Click File then select Open. This saves the current configuration to the file name it was opened as. It will overwrite the existing file. 26 3 USING BT2600 Menus configuration, the new modified version will overwrite the original file. Click File then select Save. Save As Print This will open a save window allowing you to enter a new name for the configuration file. Click File then select Save As. Click File then select Print. This command displays the Print dialog box which lets you print the contents of the display window. Printer Section Name: Properties: Print range Section All: Current Page: Copies Section Number of copies: Shows the current default printer. Click the down button to select other printers. Click this button to open a printer specific setting dialog box. Prints the entire content of the display memory. Prints the current display page. Select number of copies to be printed. Printer Setup Click File then select Printer Setup. This command displays the Printer dialog box which lets you change the printer options. Pager Section This section shows the current paper size and source. Click the down button to select other options. Orientation Section Click either Portrait or Landscape to select the way the text is printed. Margins Section Enter the measurement in inches for the margins (left, right, top and bottom). The Edit menu is used for editing text in the terminal screen. The edit menu can insert and delete lines; clear the display; reset the terminal; and copy, paste, and grab text. Insert Line Delete Line Clear Line Clear Display This command inserts a new line below the current line. The current line is the line with the alphanumeric cursor (_). 1. Right click for Popup menu or click Edit on the menu bar. 2. Click Insert line. Hot Key: Shift Insert This command deletes the current line with the alphanumeric cursor (_). 1. Hot Key: Shift F12 Reset Copy Paste This command resets the terminal emulation by performing the following functions: Aborts any operations in progress (printing, capturing). Clears the display. Enables the keyboard. Halts any data communication in progress and clears the contents of buffers and FIFOs. Resets terminal configurations to saved values. Disables "Display Function". Resets the margins to 1 and 80. Turns off "Insert Character" mode. Hot Key: ALT + Shift + Break This command places a copy of selected text in the Clipboard. 1. Select text on the display. 2. Right click for Popup menu or click Edit on the menu bar. 3. Click Copy. Hot Key: Alt C This command inserts clipboard text at the current cursor location, or replaces selected text with text in the Clipboard. When the BT2600 is online, the text will be sent to the host computer. To some operating systems or applications, the text may not be inserted or replaced correctly as it appeared on the display. To insert text: 1. Move cursor to the location where the text to be inserted. 2. Right click for Popup menu or click Edit on the menu bar. 3. Click Paste. To replace text: 1. 29 USING BT2600 Menus Hot Key: Alt V Grab Grab memorizes selected text and stores it into a Memory Slot: 1. Select text 2. Click on Edit and then Grab, or Right click for Popup menu and select Grab 3. A copy of the selected text is copied to next available Memory Slot. To store the selected text in a specific Memory Slot, press Alt-n, where n is the slot number between 0 and 9. Modes Menu The Mode menu is enables remote communications, caps lock, and auto line feed. Remote Caps Lock AutoLF When enabled and connected to the host computer, the terminal communicates with and controls, and is controlled by, the host computer. When disabled, even though connected, the terminal operates locally. When set, all characters are set to upper case. This overrides the Caps Lock Key on the keyboard. When enabled, an automatic Line Feed is generated after the Carriage Return key (Enter Key) is pressed. Keys Menu The Mode menu is enables remote communications, caps lock, and auto line feed. 30 3 USING BT2600 Mini Cartridge Tape Emulation (264x) Show Key Labels Show Memory Slots Function Keys Change User Keys Click Keys and select Show key labels to toggle between showing and hiding the soft key labels on the bottom of the display. The labels correspond to the F1 to F12 keys, or a subset of them, on the keyboard. There are 10 Memory Slots, numbered from Slot 0 to Slot 9. They are used to memorize items which can be recalled as keyboard inputs. Each Memory Slot can store a string up to 80 characters long. Use one of the following methods to select one of the available sets of function keys. Most emulations will have only the mode keys and user defined keys available. The graphic function keys are available only when 2648A emulation is enabled in the BT2600G version of the software. 1. Press F9 to step through function keys. 2. Click Keys, select Function keys and select one of the listed Keys. Hot Key: F9 The eight Functions Keys (F1-F8) can be defined as 8 User Keys. They can be programmed either locally or remotely by a program. Hot Key: Shift F9 Mini Cartridge Tape Emulation (264x) Load Mini Cartridge 1. Each Mini Cartridge tape is implemented with a standard Windows File, including record and file marks. The function will write to a file, or read from a file, on the PC. Note that the content of the file cannot be read with any standard Windows software. Click Mini Cartridge button to open the tape dialog box. 2. 35 4 BT2600G HP Graphics Terminal Emulator 4 Introduction Configuration - Emulation Setup The BT2600G version of the software emulates the HP2648 Graphics Terminal. The HP Keyboard Graphics Control Keys are mapped into the numerical key pad on the PC keyboard. For convenience, all the Graphics Control Keys can be accessed by either the pull down Graphics menu or a Popup menu. In addition, a set of Graphics Function Keys can be used. Select the Settings tab on the Properties dialog box to show the current emulation properties. Make sure the Emulation is set to 2648A. 36 4 BT2600G HP Graphics Terminal Emulator Graphics Display Graphics Display The size of the graphics display is 720 x 360 pixels. It has separate display memory from the alphanumeric display. This allows the graphic data and the alphanumeric data to be viewed or modified separately. Graphics Display On/ Off This command toggles between showing and hiding the graphics display. 1. Click Graphics on the menu bar. 2. Select Graphics Display. Hot Key: Shift numerical key pad 9 Default: On Alphanumeric Display On/Off Alphanumeric Cursor On/Off This command toggles between showing and hiding the alphanumeric display. 1. Click Graphics on the menu bar. 2. Select Alphanumeric Display. Hot Key: Shift numerical key pad 5 Default: On This command toggles between showing and hiding the alphanumeric cursor. 1. Click Graphics on the menu bar. 2. Select Alphanumeric Cursor. Default: On Graphics Cursors Two graphics cursors are used to input graphics data, interact with the user, or to interact with graphics applications. The Graphics Position Cursor, smaller colored cross, is used to identify the graphics position within the graphics display coordinates. The Graphics Cursor, larger white cross, is used to track the PC mouse movement. Select Cursor. Hot Key: numerical key pad 5 Default: Off Graphics Cursor Positioning To move the Graphics Position Cursor, 1. Pick up the colored Graphics Position Cursor, if not already done so. 2. Move the mouse to the desired location. 3. Drop the Graphics Position Cursor. Pick up the Graphics Position Cursor 1. With the mouse, move the white Graphics Cursor to within the area of the colored Graphics Position Cursor. 2. Left click. 3. The Graphics Position Cursor will be shown within the white Graphics Cursor. Drop the Graphics Position Cursor 1. Left click. 2. Move the mouse. 3. The colored Graphics Position Cursor will be shown separated from the white Graphics Cursor. Clear the entire graphics display Start graphics text mode Enable zoom and increase the magnification value. Enable zoom and decrease the magnification value. Zoom Zoom In Zoom Out This command enables or disables the zoom function. 1. Click Graphics. 2. Click Zoom. When zoom is enabled, the graphics will be displayed at the last selected magnification level. Hot Key: numerical key pad Del Default: Off This command increases the zoom magnification level. 1.
