3 1. OVERVIEW 1.1. GUI JOINI is a Windows desktop application (data integration and ETL tool), used to manage data files in an innovative way. Joini's GUI looks and feels like "Windows File Explorer" and is simple and intuitive to use. Joini is designed to be used by a wide range of users: Software and Database Developers, DBA, Analytics Consultants, Statistical Programmers and by anyone who is working with data intensively. Joini enables users to work comfortably in a complex data file environment and as an off-the-shelf software can save users and companies time and money by replacing the need of developing new software solutions. In Joini a user can use third party software by clicking buttons within Joini (MS Access, Excel, SAS, SPSS, and SQL Servers). Those software should be installed and licensed separately. Joini has two main screens - the 'Folder' screen and the 'Files' screen: 3
4 The first one above, the 'Folder screen', contains 6 folders. The 'test' folder is open with 8 files in it. The second screen, the 'Files' screen', shows the 'test' folders with its 8 files. The right pane displays the file statistics, including row count, date of creation and the original file type from which the file was created. At the bottom of the second screen there are 5 buttons with images of software on them (SAS, MS Access, MS Excel, IBM SPSS, Text Editor). By clicking on one of them the user will access his files in the chosen software, for example if the user clicks on the MS Access button, Access will open. Only the files which are in the 'test' folder will be visible to the user, along with all the queries, forms and macro the user has created for this folder in Access. 2. Working with folders in Joini 2.1. Creating a new folder Click on the new folder button on the bellow screen. 4

Deleting a folder Right click on a folder and select 'Delete Folder' on the bellow screen Opening a folder Double click on the folder or right click on it and select 'Open Folder' on the bellow screen Updating folder's properties Right click on a folder and select 'Properties on the bellow screen. 5
6 3. Working with files in the folder level of Joini 3.1. Copying a file from one folder to another Right click on a file and select 'Copy File'. Change folder and select 'Paste File', in the bellow screen Deleting a file Right click on a file and select 'Delete File', in the bellow screen. 4. Backing up and restoring files in Joini 4.1. Backing up files Go to 'Tools' menu and select 'Full Backup', as shown in the bellow screen. 6
7 4.2. Restoring files On the Welcome screen bellow, click on the 'Restore Files' link. 7
8 5. The working server and database In Joini you can work not only with SQL Server Express, which Microsoft distribute freely. You can work with other SQL Servers, if you have them installed and licensed on your network. This enables you to work with JOIN with any SQL Server and database you wish (having enough permissions) Installation of Microsoft SQL Server Express. If you do not have SQL Server Express installed on your computer and do not have any SQL Servers on your network, to work with Joini, you'll have to install the SQL Server Express edition. Click on the 'Install Microsoft SQL Express' link on the above Welcome screen and follow the installation instructions Changing the working database For creating Joini folders in other databases. Click on the 'Change Working Database' on the above Welcome screen and select the desired database on the screen bellow: 8
9 5.3. Creating a new database Type the name of the new database you wish to create and click on the 'New Database' button on the above screen. 9
10 6. Working with files in the file level of Joini 6.1. Importing a file to a folder, using Joini Click on the 'Import File' button from the above screen and select from the bellow screen the file you want to import: 10
11 6.2. Importing a file to a folder, Using MS Access or SAS Click on the SAS or MS Access buttons in the following screen, Access or SAS will open. Create the files and close SAS or MS Access. The files will be added to your folder if you decide you want them to be added. 7. Updating files 7.1. Using SAS or MS Access Click on the SAS or MS Access buttons on the above screen, SAS or Access will open. Update the files and close SAS or MS Access. The files will be updated 7.2. Updating columns names, data types or change columns order Right click on a file on the above screen and select 'Update Columns' or 'Change Columns Order' Updating a file by executing SQL commands Go to the Tools menu on the above screen and select 'Run SQL Script'. On the bellow screen you can execute your SQL Script: 11
12 8. Previewing the file 8.1. Previewing and searching the data within Joini Right click a file and select 'Preview File'. For searching values in the file select 'Find in File'. 12
13 8.2. Opening files in Microsoft Excel, IBM SPSS or in a text Editor Select the file and click on the buttons on the bottom pane of the above screen. For example to open the file in Excel, select the file and click the Microsoft Excel button. The file will be opened in Excel. 9. Action with files 9.1. Copying a file from folder to folder From the above screen, right click on a file and select 'Copy File' Deleting a file from a folder From the above screen, right click a file and select 'Delete File' Empting a file without dropping it From the above screen, right click a file and select 'Empty File' Renaming a file From the above screen, right click a file and select 'Rename File' Refreshing row count From the above screen, right click a file and select 'Refresh Row Count'. 10. More actions on columns Building indexes On the above screen select 'Indexes' to build unique and none unique indexes, for performance and updating reasons. 13
14 10.2. Masking and unmasking data (integer numbers) User working on data files sometimes need to give others the data without a sensitive ID column. With JOINI it is possible to mask the sensitive column and unmask it back again. On the above screen select 'Mask' or 'Unmask Data'. 11. Insert and union files Inserting a file to an existing file Click on the 'Insert Files' button at the top right hand side of the above screen. : Union two or more files Click on the 'Union Files' button in the top right hand side of the above screen. 12. Exporting files to MS Access, Excel, SAS, SQL table/views Select the desired file and go to the File menu. Select 'Export Current File to' and choose the format you would like to export to. For SAS or SQL Server format you would be able to choose which columns you would like to export. 14
15 13. Documentation of actions in a folder Go to the Tools menu of the above screen and select 'Documentation'. In the following screen, by adding actions you will be able to document all the actions you have done in the current folder. 15
