Eastside Literacy Tutor Support Word Processing Tutorial Before you start, you will need a blank diskette. You will also need to know how to use the mouse and the keyboard, and how to select text on the screen Part I Creating and Saving a document. 1. Open the word processor to a blank document. Now you have a new document (or file). Your screen might look something like this. Note the blank area for typing and the command buttons at the top. Begin typing. Type My name is. I live at 123 Hopelink Lane. Think of a name for your document. Write the name on this page. Document Name: 1
3. Place the diskette in the drive slot. Save your file. Click the SAVE button, which looks like a tiny diskette. In the box labeled File name, type a: then your document name. Click 5. Exit the word processor. Click the EXIT button (in the top right, has an x on it). 2
6. Eject the diskette. Write your file name on the label. Insert the diskette again. Start the word processor. 7. Open your document. Click the OPEN FILE button (looks like a file folder). Type a: my file in the File name box. Of course, you will substitute the name you gave your document for my file. 8. Click the mouse arrow at the end of the last sentence in your document. Press the ENTER key. This will move the blinking line (called the cursor) to the start of a new paragraph. Type your own words or copy the following: I am enjoying working on the computer. Typing is easier to read than most handwriting. Like everything else, practice makes me more productive. Now I am going to print these sentences. Of course, I will SAVE my work first. Don t worry about making typing mistakes, we will correct them later. Save your file. Now you are ready for Part II. 3
Part II Making Changes and Corrections You will use the document you just created to practice making changes. Or, you can use a document we have created containing mistakes that need correcting. Before you begin, ask your tutor to transfer the document containing the practice paragraph to the computer you are working on, and show you how to open that document. 1. Highlighting or selecting text is often the first step in making changes to a document. You highlight by placing the cursor in front of the phrase you wish to select. Then, click with your mouse and drag along the line of text, without releasing your finger, until you have a gray or black box covering the entire word or phrase you wish to select. Practice this technique by performing the following changes: Move the cursor to just in front of the 1 in 123 Hopelink Lane. 123 Select 123 and type in Another way to correct an error is to use the BACKSPACE key. Put the cursor to the right of 456 and press the backspace key three times to erase 456. Now type in 789. You can also use the BACKSPACE key to remove more than just one letter at a time. Select an entire sentence and press BACKSPACE. 4
3. UNDO is a very powerful feature that corrects mistakes you might make and returns your text back to the way it was before you made a change. It only remembers the VERY LAST thing you did. Press UNDO now to recover the sentence you just deleted. 4. Practice using these techniques to correct any mistakes you made earlier, or mistakes you find in the practice paragraph. For more practice, change the address 789 Hopelink Lane to your real address. Then, move the cursor to a point just following the address and add the name of the city where you live. 5. Copy and Paste This is a useful feature of all word processors. Begin by selecting some text, say the last sentence in your paragraph. Click the COPY button: Now place the cursor at the beginning of the previous sentence. Click the PASTE button: The CUT command is similar to copy, except it also removes the first instance of your selected text. Try the same exercise as above, substituting CUT for COPY and note the difference. 6. Save your document to preserve the changes you have made changes are not permanent until you SAVE! Now click on the PRINT button. When you are finished remember to close the word processor and eject your diskette. 5
