2 Opening Garage Band When opening the application, Garage Band, this dialog box will appear. Depending on what you would like to do in garage band, a different option would be selected. Do not be concerned. The option can be changed after your selection is initially made. Your input may need adjusting depending on your requirements. Adjust Display Mode You are able to adjust the display mode in garage band. If you would like to measure through Beats & Project, this is set as default. However, if you prefer to measure by time, select the time display mode option. You will now notice the User interface adjusts to suit your preferences. Garage Band 2

3 Library Adjust the settings of your track. Switch from voice track to acoustic guitar, furthermore, adjust the nature of the track. Experiment with the settings to create your desired track. Garage Band 3

4 Apple Loops Experiment with Apple loops, located on the right hand side of the application. View the various loops, preview and when you have selected your loop, click and drag the loop to the track. Garage Band 4

5 New Track Creating multiple tracks requires additional knowledge and skill. Layering audio improves your track. 1. Select Track on the main menu 2. Select New Track 3. Refer back to Opening Garage Band to select the appropriate option Recording To maximize the quality of your recording, follow these simple steps: - Find a secluded, quiet space - Avoid being interrupted during your recording - Test your equipment before recording - Create written notes to create sense of timing and rhythm - Avoid unnecessary noises - If you make a mistake, keep talking, and edit it later - Make your audio casual but structured. Don t lecture or read your content - Speak naturally Delete Track When something goes wrong, you may want to delete a created track. 1. Select Track on the main menu 2. Select Delete Track 3. Ensure you have the correct track selected before you delete Split regions at play head When recording, importing an audio clip or adding a loop, sometimes you may not want the whole track. Using the split feature, you are able to manipulate the track to suit your needs. 1. Adjust the play head to the desired position 2. Select Edit on the main menu 3. Select Split regions at play head. You will now notice the track split into two sections 4. Alternatively you can join regions by selecting the regions, holding shift on the keyboard 5. Select Edit on the main menu 6. Select Join Regions Garage Band 5

6 Volume You may want a track to fade in or fade out at any point in time. The Volume feature of each track allows you to create points, adjusting the volume of the desired track. 1. Select the desired track 2. Double click to create a point 3. Adjust the point to suit your need Cycle range Before you decide to preview or share your song, you may want to adjust the cycle range. Adjusting the cycle range allows you to share your track to the desired duration. Click and drag the selected area to adjust the cycle range. Share Track There are many audio formats used on the web. The Mp3 format offers a balance of sound quality, file size and widespread compatibility. This format is compressed to be smaller than the original files, making it not as high quality. It is advisable to keep a copy of the original Garage Band project file in addition to exporting an Mp3 or AAC file for distribution. If you will be exporting your podcast with photos, you will need to export as an AAC Once you have created your masterpiece, it is time to share your song with others. 1. Select Share on the main menu 2. Select the desired option When you select Share song to itunes, a dialog box appears. Selecting the quality of your song will depend on the desired outcome. Quality and file Size If you are creating a podcast (spoken words) you can use lower quality audio. Most podcasts are set to 64 bit/s. Higher quality audio will create a larger file Garage Band 6

7 size. If you are using the audio for Web purposes, a balance between quality and file size should be considered. Garage Band 7
