5 3. Models There are four model ranges: A. KI982x - Single mode B. KI981x Multimode * C. KI980x - Specialty POF & Visible D. KI984x Specialty VCSEL * Specify PC or APC at time of ordering * MM sources are EF compliant at 50 um working PC & APC connector versions PC APC 5

7 5. Instrument t Care Keep the instrument in its carry case during storage and transport Use only high quality batteries. For prolonged storage remove batteries. The instrument is resistant to normal dust and moisture, however it is not waterproof. If moisture gets into the instrument, remove batteries & dry it out carefully before using it again. Where possible, keep instrument away from strong sunlight. Clean the instrument case using Iso-Propyl-Alcohol (IPA) or other non solvent cleaning agents. DO NOT use Acetone or other active solvents as damage may result. 7

9 61Fitb 6.1 batteries To Fit Batteries. Press battery cover latch down and push away from case. Insert 2 AAA cells Replace battery cover Battery life. Laser/LED source: 40/35 hours in Autotest, typical using Alkaline batteries. 25 hours typical in CW mode Low Battery Display. Indicator shows when batteries are low. Warning. Do not use lithium batteries, or other batteries with a nominal voltage greater than 1.8 V as the instrument may become damaged. 9

10 6.2 Power On-Off Off To turn on Push the Aqua [On/Off] button OFF 10 minutes auto-off Permanent operation Low battery indicator To Defeat auto time out. Press [On/Off] & [HOLD] for several seconds. Instrument will beep twice. on will display. Perm will display on the upper part of the LCD. on Perm 10

11 6.3 Determine type of test cord SM APC connector instruments, green connector housing SM PC connector instruments, blue connector housing MM PC connector instruments, beige connector housing Identify type of test cord and configuration required. E.g. SC-APC to ST-PC Must match connector end face type, PC-PC or APC-APC connector. Wrong end face type may damage instrument. PC APC 11

12 Fit connector Once the required test cordage configuration is identified, a matching adaptor for the source can be selected. 12

15 6.5 Cleanliness Failure to ensure optical connectors are clean will lead to incorrect measurement. Dust particles are similar in size to the core diameter of SM fibre. Arguably most failures are due to connector and adaptor contamination! How can I tell if the connection is clean? Inspect test cord connectors with optical microscope. If clean insert into instrument. Remove test cord and re-inspect. If test cord connector is clean then the instrument connector and its adaptor is also clean. 15

16 7. Operating Modes Select mode of operation 1. CW mode: sends continuous light. 2. Autotest alternates between wavelengths. 2. Test tone / Multi-fibre Identification number : sends modulated light or a Fibre identification number. Modulation 270, 1,000 and 2,000 Hz. Multi-Fibre identifier number 1 ~

18 7.2 Autotest Mode Start AutoTest Press [AUTO] LCD displays Auto LCD displays >>> indicating the active port. LCD displays On, the word on flashes Data sent to far end includes : nominal output power, serial number & λ A compliant Power Meter will automatically toggle between these λs Stop Autotest: Press [Auto] or turn instrument Off db m on 1550 nm 18

Additional Features Output Level Adjust Adjusting the relative laser powers of a multi wavelength source enables the user to match the source to a power meter such that the power meter reads the same as the source wavelength is changed. Why Use O/P Power Adjust? Consider a remote referencing situation the REMOTE power meter is not calibrated at one of the wavelengths. Multi wavelength testing can be performed without altering the power meter s wavelength setting. TamperLock Locks source to a user selected wavelength. Requires user defined keystroke to activate or de-activate. 21

22 8.1 Output Power Adjust Toggle power out: Select required λ. Press [] to decrease O/P power, or to toggle up or down. Press & hold [] then press [λ ] or [ λ] db m on 1550 nm To set max O/P power:- Press & hold [], press & hold [ λ] for 3 seconds dB m on 1550 nm To set min O/P power:- Press & hold [], press & hold [λ ] for 3 seconds. Note: 1550 nm db m Applicable to laser sources only on 0.1 db steps over 3dB range. Meter beeps at each change Resets to factory default at power Off 22

23 8.2 TamperLock To Activate: Set source to desired λ Press and hold [λ ] while pressing [] for 5 seconds. Instrument will beep 5 times & display will show code Enter a 6 key sequence using any keys except [POWER]. A triple beep and LOut on display will indicate completion. record keystroke sequence for future use. To cancel TamperLock setup, press [POWER]. When active <<< and >>> displayed db m on 1550 nm To clear: Press and hold [λ ] & [] whilst turning power On. code will display, enter the 6 key code sequence. If successful, PASS will be displayed indicating TamperLock cleared. If incorrect sequence entered, FAIL x will be displayed (where x is attempt count). Alternatively, TamperLock will be cleared after 3 unsuccessful attempts. 23
