Volume over time dosing 2. Using the distal pressure as part of the assessment of the IV site 3. Setting the soft and hard locks 4. You can also practice these features while completing the Hospira elearning module. Ask a colleague to observe your performance of programming the safety features and complete the checklist. 3 Employee Name: Date \ \ Part 1: Safety Features for Primary Infusions A. Volume over time dosing Program a primary infusion of 300 mls of Blood Products over 2 hours. Select the ON/OFF button. Press the Line A soft key. Press the Therapy soft key. Press the Page Down soft key to find Blood Products. Press the SELECT to highlight Blood Products Press the Enter soft key to select Blood Products Press the Choose soft key to select Dose Calculation. Press the Choose soft key for ml/hr. Press the SELECT button to highlight the VTBI (Volume to Be Infused) field. Using the keypad, enter a VTBI of 300 ml. Press the SELECT button to highlight the Duration field. Using the keypad, enter a duration of 2 hours Press the START button. Successful: 1 st attempt 2 nd attempt 3 rd attempt B. Distal pressure setting Distal pressure increases when an IV site becomes occluded. Checking the distal pressure when assessing the IV site can alert the nurse to potential occlusions. Maximum infusion pressure is 20 psig. Press the Options/Vol Inf soft key. Press the SELECT button to highlight Pressure/Post Infusion Rate. Press the Choose soft key. 4 You are about to program an infusion for an elderly patient who has a small 24 gauge catheter. You want to change the distal occlusion pressure alarm setting. Press the Options/Vol Inf soft key. Press the SELECT button to highlight Pressure/Post Infusion Rate. Press the Choose soft key. Press the SELECT button to highlight the Distal Pressure Limit field. Using the keypad, enter a number and state rationale for the change (e.g. there has been a rise in distal pressure indicating an occlusion decreasing the pressure alarm will alert nurse when the occlusion worsens OR increase the pressure limit alarm when the site is healthy and the pressure is high because of the catheter gauge. Press the Enter soft key to initiate change. Successful: 1 st attempt 2 nd attempt 3 rd attempt C. Lock the key pad 1. Soft Lock - Using the keypad lock code Using the keypad, lock the soft key pad by pressing the decimal point and then Using the keypad, unlock the keypad by pressing the decimal point and then Hard Lock Using the toggle switch on the back of the device Identifies that when the keypad is disabled, the only functional button is the STOP button. Pressing the STOP button stops the infusion and the device alarms. The only way to silence the alarm is to disable the keypad lock and press the SILENCE button. 5 D. Resolving Proximal Occlusion A common cause for this alarm is when a secondary line is not attached to line B or the clamp on the tubing of line B is closed. Follow the steps below to resolve the Proximal Occlusion Line B Alarm. Press the SILENCE button. Connect syringe or 2nd Line (or unclamp secondary set) to the port on the cassette Press the STOP button. Press the Back Prime soft key.
