3 Determine GNSS Board Hardware Version Topcon recommends use of Topcon Receiver Utility (TRU) for receiver and modem configuration. TRU v2.8 can be downloaded for free at Warning: Older board revisions (i.e. Rev 2.2 or 2.3) do not support the new firmware. Adverse effects can result up to rendering the board non-functional Checking Version via TRU 1. Connect cables (MC-R3 specific RS-232 programing cable to PC COM-Port or USB via converter, power supply cable and to supply power) Note: If checking Main GPS board, connect Main serial cable to PC. If checking Auxiliary GPS board, connect AUX serial cable to PC 3. In TRU, select Device Application Mode and click Receiver Managing mode. Connect to Receiver Manager: Device Connect Note: Make sure correct Port Name is chosen for your serial/usb connection 4. Once in Receiver Managing, click the Information icon 5. Under Board Version, the Euro 112 PII hardware revision will be defined as follows: Board Version on receiver information screen (TRU) Corresponding Revision board Compatible Released GNSS Firmware U112_2 Rev 2.2 or D4 U112_3 Rev D5 U112_6 Rev D5

4 Checking Version via FLoader 1. Connect cables (MC-R3 specific RS-232 programing cable to PC COM-Port or USB via converter, power supply cable and to supply power) 3. Select COM port for GPS receiver 4. 5 Footnotes: 1. Downgrading GNSS firmware 4.1D5 to 3.6D4 (or prior) is a 2-step process. Refer to the GNSS Firmware Upgrade/Downgrade Instructions section below for downgrade process 2. The Euro 112 P11 rev 6.9 board is not compatible with 3.6D4 (or prior) GNSS firmware 3. On Digital UHF I radio boards with GNSS firmware 4.1D5 loaded, downgrading and/or re-installing older 1.6revG firmware is not possible. To successfully install radio firmware 1.6revG, the GNSS firmware first needs to be downgraded to 3.6D4 (or prior). Once this is done, older radio firmware can be installed successfully 4. In order to successfully downgrade Digital UHF II radio firmware from 2.0 to 1.2p1 (or prior), user must select "mloader.ldr" loader file from 2.0 package and " duhf2main.ldp" image file from 1.2p1 (or prior) package 5. In order to successfully downgrade FH915 radio firmware from 2.3p0 to 2.2p0 (or prior), user must select "mloader.ldr" loader file from 2.3p0 package and "fhplmain.ldp" image file from 2.2p0 (or prior) package 6. The Euro 112 PII rev6.9 board is designed for full compatibility with Digital UHF I/II radio firmware 2.0 and FH915 radio firmware 2.3p0. Although downgrading radio firmware to older versions is compatible, it is not recommended 7. After firmware upgrade for MC-R3 (Digital UHF I only), it is required to Power-Cycle the receiver for TRU to visually display upgrade 2.0 firmware version GNSS Firmware Upgrade/Downgrade Instructions Upgrading GNSS Firmware via TRU Note: The GNSS firmware upgrade process to GNSS firmware v4.1d5 will work similarly to previous GNSS firmware upgrading methods. Refer to the TRU user manual for additional information. Warning: After updating GNSS firmware to v4.1d5 or downgrading to v3.6d4 (or prior), re-initializing the compact flash card (CF) is necessary. All files on the CF card will be lost during this process. Prior to upgrade, download and save any logged files and other important files that are being stored on the CF card. Similarly, if downgrading firmware from 4.1D5 to 3.6D4 (or prior), re-initializing the CF card will need to be done. Refer to section titled Compact Flash (CF) Card re-initialization for more information on re-initializing the CF card. Method 1 (TRU via PC) 1. Connect cables (MC-R3 specific RS-232 programing cable to PC COM-Port or USB via converter, power supply cable and to supply power) Note: If upgrading Main GPS firmware, connect Main serial cable to PC. If upgrading Auxiliary GPS firmware, connect AUX serial cable to PC 3. In TRU, select Device Application Mode and click Firmware Loading. Connect to Firmware Loading: Device Connect Note: Make sure correct Port Name is chosen for your serial/usb connection 4. Click the Firmware Loading icon. Once in Firmware Loading: a. Select Device Type to Receiver. Set Capture Mode to either Power ON or Soft Break (Note: If Power ON is selected, additional Serial Port Settings can be configured (i.e. baud rate). Once you click start you will need to power off/on the MC-R3 for the process to begin)

6 b. Click Next to specify and upload v4.1d5 loader file (ramimage.ldr) and image file (main.ldp) c. Click Next to see current receiver Information d. Click Next to begin the upgrade process 5. The process will begin updating ram/updating flash to the MC-R3. Once the process is complete, a popup will read The firmware has been successfully uploaded. Click OK 6. Confirm firmware version by connect to Receiver manager and click the Information icon. Firmware Version will read 4.1D5 Aug,23,2013 Method 2 (TRU on GX-60) 1. Install TRU on GX In TRU, connect via Network to Device Application Mode and click Firmware Loading. Once in Firmware Loading: a. Connect to Firmware Loading using Network connection: Device Connect b. Click the icon next to Device Name to edit the Network Connection Parameters (Note: If upgrading Main GPS firmware, connect to If upgrading Auxiliary GPS firmware, connect to ) 3. Click Firmware Loading icon, and upload 4.1D5 image file (main.ldp) and click Start 4. The firmware is being uploaded will be displayed during the process. Once the process is complete, a popup will read The firmware is being installed. Click OK

7 5. Confirm firmware version by reconnecting to Firmware Loading and click the Information icon. Firmware Version will read 4.1D5 Aug,23,2013 Downgrading GNSS Firmware via TRU Note: Due to changes in GNSS Firmware v4.1d5, the GNSS firmware downgrade process to older GNSS firmware versions (3.6D4 or prior) differs from previous downgrade methods. In order to downgrade GNSS firmware from 4.1D5 to 3.6D4(or prior), the MC-R3 must be connected to a PC via the MC-R3 Programming Cable. Warning: Downgrading GNSS Firmware to older versions is a 2-step process and requires additional downgrade firmware file that is included in the v4.1d5 release package. Prior to attempt GNSS firmware downgrade, please refer to the section titled Determine GNSS Board Hardware Version to confirm GNSS hardware, as downgrading Euro 112 PII rev 6.9 board to 3.6D4 (or prior) firmware is not possible Step 1 Note: Refer to the TRU manual for additional procedural steps. Also, refer to Upgrading GNSS Firmware via TRU above for additional screen captures and information related to each procedural step. Step 1 of downgrading GNSS firmware is the same procedure as upgrading GNSS firmware. 1. Connect cables (MC-R3 specific RS-232 programing cable to PC COM-Port or USB via converter, power supply cable and to supply power) Note: If downgrading Main GPS firmware, connect Main serial cable to PC. If downgrading Auxiliary GPS firmware, connect AUX serial cable to PC 3. In TRU, select Device Application Mode and click Firmware Loading. Connect to Firmware Loading: Device Connect Note: Make sure correct Port Name is chosen for your serial/usb connection 4. Click the Firmware Loading icon. Once in Firmware Loading: a. Select Device Type to Receiver. Set Capture Mode to either Power ON or Soft Break (Note: If Power ON is selected, additional Serial Port Settings can be configured (i.e. baud rate). Once you click start you will need to power off/on the MC-R3 for the process to begin) b. Click Next to specify and upload v3.6d4 (or prior) loader file (ramimage.ldr) and image file (main.ldp) c. Click Next to see current receiver Information d. Click Next to begin the upgrade process 5. The process will begin updating ram/updating flash to the MC-R3. Once the process is complete, a popup will read The firmware has been successfully uploaded. Click OK Warning: Upon completion of Step 1 above, the GPS/AUX LED will change to a solid amber color; Connection to Device Application Mode Modem Manager/Receiver Manager within TRU is not possible. Continue to Step 2 to complete the downgrade process Step 2 (Power On Capture Mode via TRU) 1. In TRU, reconnect via serial to Device Application Mode and click Firmware Loading. Connect to Firmware Loading: Device Connect Note: If using older versions of TRU (v2.7 or older), either wait for baud rate and flow control to attempt to run through all attempts to connect (roughly 38-40seconds), or click Cancel to end the process. The following popup will come up, click Retry which will put the MC-R3 in Power On Capture Mode

8 2. Click the Firmware Loading icon. Once in Firmware Loading: a. Select Device Type to Receiver. Set Capture Mode to Power ON (Note: When Power ON is selected, additional Serial Port Settings can be configured (i.e. baud rate). Once you click start you will need to power off/on the MC-R3 for the process to begin) b. Click Next to specify and upload v3.6d4 (or prior) loader file (ramimage.ldr). However, this time choose the downgrade image file (main_downgrade.ldp) c. Click Next to see current receiver Information d. Click Next to begin the upgrade process 3. The process will write the final necessary firmware pieces to the MC-R3. Once complete, a popup will read The firmware has been successfully uploaded 4. TRU software will now fully function and the MAIN/AUX LEDs will flash normal 5. Verify that 3.6D4 (or prior) firmware has been fully installed on the MC-R3 by connecting to Receiver Managing by clicking Device Application Mode and click Receiver Managing. Connect to Receiver Managing: Device Connect and click the Information icon. Firmware Version should read 3.xDx (date) Compact Flash (CF) Card re-initialization Re-Initializing the CF Card via TRU Note: After GNSS firmware upgrade from 3.6D4 (or prior) to 4.1D5, the internal Compact Flash (CF) card needs to be re-initialized for full compatibility. Alternately, after GNSS firmware downgrade on older rev 3.5 boards from 4.1D5 to 3.6D4 (or prior), the CF card will need to be re-initialized for full compatibility. Warning: Re-initializing the CF card will wipe all data stored on the card. Prior to upgrading/downgrading firmware, please save all logged data and/or files stored on the card to an alternate location. Please follow the following steps to re-initialize the CF card after GNSS firmware has been upgraded to 4.1D4 from 3.6D4 (or prior). Similar steps will need to be done to re-initialize the CF card after downgrading from 4.1D5 to 3.6D4 (or prior). Both the MAIN and AUX GNSS board CF cards will need to be re-initialized: 1. Connect cables (RS-232 cable to PC COM-Port or USB via converter, power supply cable and to supply power) 3. In TRU, select Device Application Mode and click Receiver Managing mode. Connect to Receiver Managing: Device Connect 4. Once in Receiver Managing, click the File Explorer icon

9 5. Under the Files tab, right click in the main area, and select Initialize File System. Choose Yes to the popup warning message to re-initialize the CF card. 6. If MC-R3 is a dual system, repeat steps for the AUX board to re-initialize the card
