1 About PS Administrator 3.0 Ensim PS Administrator Release Notes February 04, 2002 These release notes cover product compatibility, new product features, list of applications included, version differences, system requirements, Web browser requirements, known issues, and resolved issues of Ensim PS Administrator About PS Administrator 3.0 PS Administrator 3.0 is a Web-based management interface that runs on Red Hat Linux 7.1 Private Servers or Dedicated Servers and helps you manage your server. PS Administrator 3.0 offers two levels of management. PS Administrator - designed for the user with access to the entire server and root user privileges. PS User Administrator - designed for the user with an account on the server who wants to manage that account. Ensim PS Administrator Release Notes 1

2 New features New features This section describes the new features of PS Administrator 3.0. Online and page-specific help A help option has been added to the navigation bar on both control panels. Clicking on this option brings up a list of all the related tasks in an alphabetical order. The pages have step-by-step instructions and links to the page where the task is performed. On each page the help icon opens a new browser window with help instructions specific to the tasks performed on that page. MySQL and phpmyadmin PS Administrator 3.0 now supports MySQL and phpmyadmin, a GUI to manage MySQL. The PS Administrator can create new databases and the User Administrator can create tables and database queries from their phpmyadmin control panel. Shortcuts page A shortcuts page has been added to each control panel. The shortcuts page can be accessed by clicking on the navigation bar heading. It is also the default page when logging onto the control panel. Dedicated Server support PS Administrator 3.0 now runs on ServerXchange Private Servers and Dedicated Servers. Sendmail SMTP authentication SMTP authentication support has now been added, allowing users to authenticate their identity (using their user name and password) and to check mail before sending it out. New look and feel The icons and the overall look and feel of PS Administrator 3.0 has improved. The interface is more compact and easier to navigate. Ensim PS Administrator Release Notes 2

3 Applications included with PS Administrator 3.0 Applications included with PS Administrator 3.0 The following server applications are commonly installed on PS Administrator. Your PS Administrator may not include all the applications listed. For more information on these applications, refer the PS Administrator 3.0 online help. Analog Web/FTP Log Analyzer Measures the usage traffic on your Web and FTP servers. Apache Web Server Responds to requests from the Web browser. BIND Domain Name Server Translates domain names into IP addresses. Majordomo Mailing List Server Manages mailing lists. Microsoft FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions Allows you to support customers who want to use Microsoft FrontPage to manage their Web sites. Miva Merchant Provides e-commerce support for domains. mod_perl for Apache Enables you to write and process PERL/CGI scripts. MySQL Database Allows you to work with SQL databases. OpenSSH Secure Shell Provides secure remote access to another system over a network. Open SSL Secure Web Provides secure Web pages. Ensim PS Administrator Release Notes 3

4 Applications included with PS Administrator 3.0 PHP Hypertext Preprocessor for Apache Creates dynamic Web pages. phpmyadmin Web Based MySQL Administration Allows you to manage your SQL databases over the Internet. POP3 + IMAP Server Processes incoming mail. proftpd FTP Server Transfers files over the Internet. Python Enables you to write system utility programs and scripts. Sendmail SMTP Server Routes outgoing and incoming mail. Telnet Provides remote access to another system over a network. 5 Differences between PS Administrator 3.0 and previous versions Differences between PS Administrator 3.0 and previous versions This section describes the differences between PS Administrator 3.0 and previous versions. Appliance architecture In earlier versions of PS Administrator, you could chose not to install one or more of the PS Administrator applications. In PS Administrator 3.0, all applications are installed. Applications that are not in use can just be turned off. This new architecture improves response time for application upgrades and enhances stability. It also makes upgrades and patches easier to deploy. DNS improvements When a new site is added it needs to have the following records created. Primary NS Record the PS Administrator DNS Server Secondary NS Record the virtual DNS or an external server Domain A Record the record for domain.com WWW A Record the record for FTP A Record the record for ftp.domain.com MX Record the mail exchanger record that forwards mail to the mail server In PS Administrator 3.0, all the records listed above are automatically added. You can use a virtual DNS or an external name server for the secondary NS and the records are created based on that information. Red Hat Linux 7.1 PS Administrator 3.0 runs on ServerXchange Red Hat Linux 7.1 Private Servers or Dedicated Servers. All applications are listed PS Administrator 3.0 now lists all the applications. 6 System requirements System requirements Web Foundation Suite (with PSadmin) 3.0 can be installed on Linux Dedicated Servers or Private Servers that use ServerXchange server management software. Table 0-1 lists the minimum system requirements needed for your server. Table 0-1. Minimum system requirements Operating system Processor Memory (RAM) Disk space Prerequisites Red Hat Linux 7.1 Intel -compatible 128 MB 600 MB Python uploaded and registered with ServerXchange. Important: You must set the memory at a minimum of 128 MB. Failure to do so may still allow for a successful installation, but the server will not function properly. Web browser requirements In order to view the installed application, it is recommended that you use one of the following browsers. Microsoft Internet Explorer, version 5.0 and later Important: If you are using Internet Explorer, version 6.0, please verify that you have set your security settings (under Internet Options) to medium; otherwise some pages may not display properly. Netscape 4.7x or 6.2 We do not recommend using Netscape 6.0 and 6.1 since performance and functional problems have been experienced in these releases. Ensim PS Administrator Release Notes 6

7 Known issues Known issues This section describes the known issues of PS Administrator The numbers in parentheses refer to the Ensim Problem Report (PR). Re-initialization required after uninstalling PS Administrator After uninstalling PS Administrator from a Private Server, you must re-initialize the Private Server before you can install the services again, otherwise the installation fails. To re-initialize the Private Server, delete the existing Private Server from the ServerXchange Server & Application Manager and add a new Private Server with the same network settings. Inability to install PS Administrator and additional addon services simultaneously Do not install PS Administrator and additional Addon services simultaneously. You must install each service individually, one after the other. (12854, 12855) Resolved issues The issue with intermittent file upload crashes has now been fixed.
