3 Peer to Peer and Client-Server Peer-to-peer Networks Types of Networks Every computer can communicate directly with every other computer By default, no computer has more authority than another Every computer is capable of sending and receiving information to and from every other computer 3

5 Peer-to-Peer Network Advantages: Easy to install Cheap No need administrator Disadvantages: Decentralized - No central repository for files and applications. Less secure Limitation- Work well with 10 computers or fewer 5

6 Client/Server Client/Server Networks Server: central computer used to facilitate communication and resource sharing between other computers on the network (called clients) Client/server network: uses a server to enable clients to share data, data storage space, and devices To function as a server, a computer must be running a network operating system (NOS) 6

8 Client/Server Networks (continued) Advantages: Centralized - Resources and data security are controlled through the server. Scalability - Any or all devices can be replaced individually as needs increase. Flexibility - New technology can be easily integrated into system. More Secure Disadvantages: Not easy to install Expensive Not easy to maintain 8

9 Client/Server Networks Advantages of using client/server networks over peer-to-peer networks: User logon accounts and passwords can be assigned in one place Access to multiple shared resources can be centrally granted to a single user or groups of users Problems can be tracked, diagnosed, and often fixed from one location Servers are optimized to handle heavy processing loads and dedicated to handling requests from clients, enabling faster response time Because of their efficient processing and larger disk storage, servers can connect more than a handful of computers on a network 9

10 Steps to add a Share Sharing Files, Disks, and Printers Right click on a folder, drive, or printer and select Sharing and Security Drive/Folder: Select share this folder Printer: Select the Share as NOTE: You must be a member of the Administrators or Power Users group 10

11 Setting Share Permission There are two places permissions must be set in the Properties Dialog. Security Tab Local Permissions (NTFS Permissions) Apply to users on local machine Also apply to network users Sharing Tab and click the Permissions button Share/Remote Permissions These permissions are used when the user is accessing the drive, folder or printer over the network Must have Local Permissions as well! 11

12 Mapping a Network Drive Why map a drive letter? Method 1: Specify entire UNC path Right click My Computer, click Map Network Drive In Windows Explorer, click Tools, Map Network Drive Method 2: Browse to share Navigate your network and find the Share Name, right click Share Name and select Map Network Drive When mapping a drive you must specify a Drive Letter (F:, G: Z:, etc.) for the Share. (Done in Map Network Drive Dialog) 12

13 Step1: Disconnecting a Network Drive Open My Computer or open Windows Explorer Step 2: Right click on the network drive and select Disconnect Note: When you disconnect a network drive, it will not remove the contents of the actual drive or folder. 13
