4 LED TECHNOLOGY BASICS LEDs Pixels LED is an abbreviation for light emitting diode. An LED is a solid-state electronic device that is much more efficient at creating light than an incandescent lamp. LEDs contain chemical compounds that emit light when electric current passes through them. Different chemical compounds emit different colors of light. Unlike incandescent lamps, LEDs have no filaments that can burn out or fail. Daktronics uses the highest quality LEDs from the top manufacturers in the world. Pixel is short for picture element. Pixels are points of light that illuminate to form letters, words, graphics, animation and video images. A can be made up of a single LED, multiple LEDs of the same color or multiple LEDs of different colors. A is the smallest element of the electronic display system that can be individually controlled. It can be turned off or on at various brightness levels. Resolution Resolution is defined as the number of s contained in the physical area of an electronic display. The greater the number of s per square foot, the greater the amount of detail displayed. 5 Choosing the right display maximizes its potential. A wide viewing angle is suggested for platform applications. Viewing angle is determined by the horizontal and vertical points of which the measured light intensity is 50 percent of that measured directly in front of the display. Actual viewing area is much greater than the viewing angle depending on site-specific circumstances and ambient light conditions. The shaded viewing angle areas represent minimum viewable areas. Simple Maintenance Daktronics displays are extremely well built and engineered. Very little maintenance is required. With any LED display, however, sometimes maintenance is necessary. 7 CHOOSING THE RIGHT DISPLAY AMBIENT LIGHT LEVELS Many areas of mass transit systems are outdoors or used during the day, resulting in conditions where standard plasma, liquid crystal display monitors, and rear projection LCDs can t be seen. LED displays can be viewed in high ambient light conditions and provide bright, high-contrast graphics and text. Communication Method Many communication options exist with electronic message center displays. Understanding the communication requirements of your location will help in choosing the right technology for the application. Some installations may have specific communication requirements. Daktronics offers several standard communication options or each display type and others may be available by request Display Content Understanding the content needs of the display owner is also an important factor in determining the right product for a specific application. Sample questions: Are one or more colors needed in the content? Will the display show graphics as well as text? How many lines of text will be displayed at one time? What is the maximum length of content needed? What type of messages will be communicated to the intended audience? Indoor and Outdoor Displays There are two main factors to consider when deciding if you need an indoor or outdoor display: weather resistance and brightness. Generally, displays mounted in areas close to trains and other forms of transportation must be designed for easy washing and resistance to the intrusion of particles such as brake dust.
