7 Birth to Raspberry PI From 2006 to 2008 they created many designs and prototypes of what we now know as the Raspberry Pi. These boards use an Atmel ATmega644 microcontroller clocked at 22.1MHz, and a 512K SRAM for data and frame buffer storage. 9 SoC System on Chip The Game Changer A System on a Chip (SoC) is an integrated circuit (IC) that integrates all components of a computer or other electronic system into a single chip. Typically SoC consist with: o Microcontroller of Microprocessor o Memory Blocks (ROM, RAM, EEPROM) o Timing Source 9
10 SoC BCM2835 Talks Operating at 700 MHz by default Real world performance roughly equivalent to the GFLOPS. That performance is similar to a 300 MHz Pentium II in 1997 ARM1176JZF-S Processor Operating at 250 MHz by default 24 GFLOPS of general purpose compute and the graphics capabilities Roughly equivalent to the level of performance of the Xbox of Broadcom BCM2835 SoC Broadcom VideoCore IV GPU 10
11 HOME AUTOMATION: OLD FIELD? POWER AND HEAT IN RPi - The RPI operating on 700MHz, will not become hot enough to need a heat sink - RPI Consumes 700mA / 3W of Power. Can be powered by a MicroUSB charger or GPIO pin. 11
12 GPIO General Purpose Input Output These pins are a physical interface between the Pi and the outside world. Software Engineering Seventeen of the 26 pins are GPIO pins; the others are power or ground pins. Including Popular Serial Buses: SPI UART I2C Hardware Engineering Bridging Two Worlds 12

14 3 Stage Boot Process Does not boot as a Traditional Computer 14
15 Hardwired First Stage Boot Loader The SoC is hardwired to run this code on startup on a small RISC Core Instructions are built into the PI during manufacture. 15
16 Second Stage Boot Loader The first-stage boot loader has not yet initialized the ARM CPU or the RAM. So, the secondstage boot loader also has to run on the GPU. The bootloader.bin file is loaded into the 128K 4 way set associative L2 cache of the GPU and then executed. This enables the RAM and loads third boot loader (start.elf) which is also in the SD Card. 16
17 Finally, Boots Up RPI Yes, this is something different. In RPI GPU dominates the full booting process. 17
18 In the RPi, GPU is the King 1080p30 Full HD HP H.264 Video Encode/Decode Advanced Image Sensor Pipeline (ISP) for up to 20-megapixel cameras operating at up to 220 megapixels per second Low power, high performance OpenGL-ES 1.1/ Gigapixel per second fill rate. High performance display outputs. Simultaneous high resolution LCD and HDMI with HDCP at 1080p60 RPi now appears to have more XBMC users than any other platform in the world. 18
