2 IoTize SAS is a startup based in the Alps near Grenoble, France. The company was founded in February Its staff doubled in size in its first year, growing to 11 employees 80% of these in R&D. The company was created as the result of KEOLABS spin-off of its microcontroller tool team and the R&D team responsible for the original IoTize Project (a collaborative project with STMicroelectronics and Gemalto). IoTize s technical team comes to the IoT with more than 30 years of experience supporting embedded systems designers with compilers, debugger/programmers, emulators and protocol analyzers for partner companies that have included NXP, STMicroelectronics and Gemalto. Today IoTize SAS is an ST Partner Program company. The team has extensive expertise in microcontrollers, embedded systems design and wireless technologies like NFC, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Thanks to its extensive R&D investment in collaboration with Gemalto and STMicroelectronics, the team continues to develop its expertise in the areas of security, network and Cloud integration. 2

3 Since the outset of its project the company has focused adding network connectivity to existing electronic systems and designs. We are so confident in our solution, that we adopted the company name, iotize. Iotize is a call to action to companies who are just considering adding connectivity to their products. Our iotize approach is so simple, versatile and easy-to-implement that we are convinced that there is no reason Not to rejuvenate legacy products and designs by adding NFC, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity. 4 Our solution provides Instant Connectivity for embedded electronics: It integrates rapidly and easily Cloud platforms via a secured, open source MQTT relay with translators for leading commercial IoT Cloud platforms. It provides designers immediate user interfaces for their systems on Android and ios platforms that correspond to users habits and expectations Most of all, it implements by configuration alone. There is no coding, no complex hardware or antenna design. It requires no modifications to the native software of the legacy system. Instead of redesigning, the IoTize solution allows companies to retrofit their existing designs, whether they are in development or deployed. It provides scalable security features to address the challenges of a wide array of applications. All implementations benefit from data channel encryption with access rights that can be enabled either remotely or locally and encryption keys protected by software or an embedded secure element. All of our wireless modules are pre-qualified and certified for conformity to the standards required for our customers target markets. 4

5 Our solution is also unique on the market today because of our integration of NFC technology for industrial systems. Near Field Communications in complement to other wireless technologies offers numerous unique advantages: NFC improves the discretion of radio implementation and security. Wireless channels do not emit when they are not in use and thus do not draw attention of unauthorized users. A qualified user can wake up the wireless connection with a smartphone and an initial exchange of keys secures the connections between that mobile device and the target system. NFC helps users connect more easily to the desired system in crowded environments. The tap of a smartphone to the NFC device immediately wakes up and pairs the Bluetooth interface of the smartphone and the target system. This is much easier and more intuitive than scanning a list of possible connections and trying to select the right one. The initial NFC tap also launches the right app on the user s smartphone. Finally, this type of NFC implementation allows designers to optimize the power consumption and eliminate un-desired emissions of the wireless channel. When no user is connected there is no need for the NFC, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connections to emit. The power consumption associated with the radio can be reduced to virtually 0. Used alone or in complement to other radio technologies, NFC offers unique advantages that are unmatched by any other technology in the IoT today! 5

6 How does the IoTize approach work The IoTize wireless module combines our communication co-processor with one or more wireless interfaces (NFC, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LoRa, etc.). This co-processor allows non-intrusive reading and writing of specific addresses in the memory of the processor of the target product via one of three types of physical, electrical connections. Depending on the connection type, the IoTize co-processor also allows partial reprogramming or full update of the system s firmware. To implement the IoTize wireless module, the designer configures it with information about the target product's processor and firmware. This includes the variables/data to be accessed and access rights. There is no coding to do. No software stacks to implement. No hardware redesign. for most designers, using an IoTize module will not require any new expertise. The creation of the configuration results in an automatically generated user-interface for Android and ios platforms. The user interface is essentially HTML and a CSS. This is easily adapted and enriched by any designer with basic knowledge of HTML and web design. The user interface controls access for users with different rights (ex. an anonymous user with read only access versus a qualified maintenance user who can modify the system configuration by changing the values of specific variables). The configuration can also specify variables that are to be transferred to a Cloud service platform and the frequency of transfer. This allows the system manufacturer or owner to recuperate data whenever a user interacts with the target product. The IoTize solution includes an MQTT relay to support data transfers to the Cloud. A sample implementation is available as part of our evaluation tool. This open source tool can be easily adapted to any Cloud based IoT service platform. Our Wi-Fi and future long range, low power modules (LoRa, SigFox, NB-IOT, etc.), the modules are configured with information for a permanent network connection to allow remote-monitoring from a Cloud platform. 6

7 As you have noticed, the IoTize wireless solution does not restrict itself to a specific wireless technology. IoTize modules implement different wireless technologies that correspond to a variety of real-world use cases. As a result the technologies on the IoTize road map started with: NFC, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi all the technologies needed to connect to smartphones and other types of information appliances. These technologies enable solutions for uses cases such as: NFC-based mass configuration for mass installations and deployments. In this case users can rapidly and easily transfer configuration data to many target products by just setting parameters and tapping the product. NFC Bluetooth or NFC Wi-Fi based local monitoring & configuration. In this case operator or maintenance users interact locally with a product. The NFC interface facilitates and secures access to the target product. They can monitor, recuperate system logs, run diagnostics, or update firmware with the advantages of increased range (security or convenience) and appropriate bandwidth for the task. The roadmap also integrates Wi-Fi, LoRa, SigFox, NB-IOT to support permanent Cloud-based monitoring and control of deployed products. Long range products will support service use cases such as: NFC Bluetooth LoRa Local servicing & Remote monitoring. In this case operators interact locally with a deployed product via NFC and Bluetooth. They transfer information about their interventions via their smartphone data connection. After servicing they enable the LoRa connection to a Cloud service platform. Product status is monitored remotely. If an anomaly is identified at the Cloud level, a service person is notified. The Service person connects to the system locally. Verifies it. May reprogram or reconfigure it. Transfers any service information to the Cloud via the smartphone data connection and then re-establishes the LoRa connection for remote monitoring. NFC Wi-Fi Remote monitoring, diagnostics & updates. In this use case, NFC is used to configure the product. The Wi-Fi interface is connected to a WAN and allows advanced interventions from the Cloud that include debugging the system or updating system firmware remotely. 7

8 The IoTize solution has developed into two main products lines offering different physical connection modes and possibilities for integration. The TapNLink line Connects directly to a products embedded processor It uses 2 GPIO on the target processor which are enabled either as a Debugging/Programming port, or as a S3P* serial port It can operate in one of 2 modes: 1. With protocol handling. IoTize software on the smartphone manages communication at the protocol level. 2. In transparent mode. In this case TapNLink just opens a communication channel. Existing software manages communication at the protocol level. This solution is useful when compatibility with legacy PC or smartphone apps is required. The TapNPass line Connects to a Field or System bus and its associated memory space It can operate in one of 2 modes: 1. With protocol handling. IoTize software on the smartphone manages communication at the protocol level. 2. In transparent mode. TapNPass just opens a communication channel. Existing software manages communication at the protocol level. This solution is useful when compatibility with legacy PC or smartphone apps is required. TapNPass is available in two models F (Fixed) products that are permanently connected to the target product N (Nomad) products with their own power supply which can be carried from one target product to another during servicing (for example) to provide connectivity on the product during the service and then removed. 8

9 TapNLink and TapNPass are complete IoTize solutions that include Wireless module (our product) IoTize Communication Service (ICS) app a supporting low-level smartphone app that manages all of the communication interfaces on the smartphone. This means designers only develop their user interface. IoTize MQTT relay and cloud platform translators an open-source Cloud relay that adapts easily to public and private Cloud platforms For both lines, the solution supports both Cloud and/or Local connectivity. The solution is designed with scalable security features for data encryption and user access management. 9
