3 Learning the Technology: Some Key Terms WiMedia PHY the radio, plus the basic rules for transmitting and receiving data WiMedia MAC the media access layer; essentially the layer of hardware and software that coordinates the activities of multiple agents using the same spectrum in overlapping physical regions both an architectural concept and (today) real hardware WUSB PAL the client of the WiMedia MAC that actually transports Wireless USB data Bands the 528 MHz channels of spectrum that are fundamental to the PHY Bandgroups collections of multiple adjacent bands, which can be used together in a coordinated fashion by the MAC DAA detect and avoid you ll hear more about this in the WiMedia presentation a 3

4 Product Requirements: Important Decisions Target market for worldwide use, need radio that supports Band Group 6 You can rely on your radio vendors for good advice MAC capabilities Different WUSB embedded device MACs have different capacities and performance Some connect by SDIO, others by wired USB, a few by parallel I/O Products are evolving quickly, so you ll want to use software that can adapt quickly to new MAC architectures Targeted USB applications For example: Windows Media Player, Dial Up Networking, Mass Storage, a 4

5 Native Wireless USB or Not? This is a hardware issue It depends on your use case For simple applications, external adapters ( DWA ) offer an easy upgrade For higher performance and more complex applications, native Wireless USB is superior Native Wireless USB delivers about 4 times the throughput in typical applications, compared to using DWA like external adapters External adapters still require UI changes on the product Native Wireless USB allows better power management Tighter integration may lower recurring product cost and may reduce power consumption Based on our experience, MCCI strongly recommends Native Wireless USB for integrated applications a 5

6 Native WUSB User Interface Need a connection manager Enable and disable WUSB Scan for hosts in range Pair (or unpair) with a given host Display the association dialog Connect (or disconnect) to a given host Need a policy for dealing with old host connections a 6

7 Other Implementation Issues Need to be able to hook up the MAC USB, SDIO or parallel Start with a reference design including antenna and RF physical design Watch for peak power consumption a 7

8 Select Software Vendors Software is needed for device and for host Host software will normally be provided with PC Development of WUSB device firmware is more complex than wired USB, especially for applications other than mass storage. you will want to license this rather than develop it yourself Hardware will evolve substantially make sure you can preserve your application investment Look for commitment to industry standards a 8

9 Selecting Vendors: System Integration Setting up a USB test lab and training engineers is time consuming and expensive Good opportunity to outsource Make sure you re not paying for your SI partner s training in WUSB software and RF technology! 11 Test and Debugging You (or your SI partner) will need at least a bus analyzer, and a variety of host systems and host software Pre tested software packages can greatly reduce the amount of testing needed at the product level WUSB products often have extra user interface considerations need to make sure your UI developers can prototype and check their ideas without waiting for the product MCCI Catena technology may help here a 11

12 What Certifications do you need? WUSB Certification from USB IF WiMedia MAC certification WiMedia PHY certification National RF Certifications (FCC, CE, VCCI) a 12

13 Certification Methods Normally, your hardware vendor will have pre certified the MAC and PHY You still need to get your product certified for RF compliance Your hardware vendor will have a variety of ways to make things easier: modules, pre approved reference designs Working with pre tested software such as MCCI s embedded package will make the software certification easier For WUSB certification, there are several test labs worldwide MCCI s lab focuses on USB and WUSB (vertical focus) Other labs focus on testing (horizontal focus) a 13

14 Ship! Don t forget to consider mass production aspects. Your PHY may need to have parameters loaded at manufacturing time to optimize it for the layout and antenna chosen You may have multiple sources, which may affect firmware loads Many device controllers have downloadable firmware; consider how to manage updates on the production line and in the field MCCI has years of experience helping customers with very high volume manufacturing; working with your SI and manufacturing team, we can help solve this problem a 14

15 Conclusion WUSB is continually evolving and it requires great effort to track the standards MCCI is the leader on the software side, and has extensive partnerships with all the key players (MAC vendors, PHY vendors, system integrators) WUSB product deployment is happening now don t be late!
