4 BYOD Frequently Asked Questions Does my daughter have to have a device? We are strongly recommending that every student has access to a device for their education and that they have this available with them in their classes. Why are we recommending this? Clear evidence is emerging of the benefits to students in having access when necessary to a personal device.these benefits are to do with increased engagement in their learning access to really good visual, written and audio learning material when they need it, improvement in the quality of writing when it is available to an authentic audience in an online environment and access to really good instructive mathematics resources. Will they be using this device all the time? No there are many classroom activities that will be based on discussion, pen and paper, whiteboards and physical activity and these will continue to be an important part of education at this school. There will be many situations in class where students work collaboratively using one device. What if my daughter has no device due to breakage, loss or family circumstances for a short period of time? The school will have a number of devices which may be borrowed for a short period from the library. Will my daughter still need text and workbooks? In the short term yes, as we transition. However there is no doubt that many text and workbooks will become available digitally as publishers are already moving towards this. Some students may wish to take all their class notes on their device whereas others will still prefer pen and paper initially Will there still be computers available at school? Yes we will still maintain a number of computer labs and computers in classrooms. These computers are available from 8 am until 5pm including interval and lunchtime. How can I decide what I should buy for my daughter? A suitable device could be a laptop, a tablet, a chromebook, Your decision will have to balance a number of factors. cost portability year level subjects being taken personal preference
5 The device should have easy input for a tablet an onscreen keyboard may be perfectly satisfactory, or you may wish to purchase an attachable keyboard you could make this decision later. The screen should be large enough to be useful visually. While a smartphone may be useful for some task such as searching for information it will not be large enough for typing in an essay. A light, touch screen laptop will be the most functional and useful of all devices however these are comparatively expensive at present, they will no doubt drop in price. Chromebooks are just coming onto the market. They are small, light, have an attached keyboard, they are designed to work with Google Apps and generally access the Internet. they are relatively cheap at just over 400. We have no preference as to whether the device is Apple, Android or Windows 8 and we will not be instructing students to purchase apps or software that will be a personal choice. There are many free apps and free open source software which will serve the purpose. Where can I buy suitable devices from? Schools are finding that buying in bulk does not reduce the price to the level of some of the specials that Companies offer. I would recommend that you shop around and wait for sales. Make sure it has at least a one year warranty most failures on computing equipment occur in the first few months. However Nelson College for Girls has an arrangement with Cyclone computers, a national supplier, to provide a range of devices for purchase. This will be able to be done online. Details for this will be provided soon. How will I know the device will be safe at school? The school provides lockers for students who wish to use one For times when the student may need to leave their bag with their device secure places are provided eg When a student is taking part in Physical Education. For assemblies students may bring their device in and place it under their chair. How can I prevent it being damaged? Most schools who have BYOD report very little damage occurring at school. We would recommend that the device has a bag to carry it in. Will the device be covered by insurance if it is damaged or lost at school. No. The school cannot cover personal items of students. All devices should be covered by the parents/caregivers insurance if they wish to do this. Will having a device really help her learning? Yes, all the current research is pointing to an increase in engagement with learning when the student has access to a device. In particularly there is a big improvement in both literacy and numeracy.
6 How do I know my daughter is not spending all her time on Facebook or other similar social networking sites when in class? This is a normal class behaviour issue. Students need to understand and act on the expectation that they will be on task in class and engaged in their work as required by the teacher. If not this will be dealt with by our normal behaviour processes. As a final resort we can block or limit access to the Internet. My daughter is very keen on an ipad. An ipad is acceptable for general use. There are many tablets that would be satisfactory if that is your choice. Samsung, ipad, asus all get good reviews. An ipad is not necessarily better than many of these tablets and in the end it comes down to preference. Neither do students need the highest capacity tablets as most of their school work will be in an online environment stored in "the cloud" off the device. If seniors have a tablet they may need to use a computer to complete some of their work. They should be operating in such a way that their work is accessible whatever device they are working on. My daughter is in senior classes for Design, Graphics, Music, Statistics and Media Studies what should we buy? If it can be afforded a laptop is suitable at this level. However weight needs to be a consideration. The lighter the laptop the more expensive it will be. Also some of the software used in these subjects has to be purchased. My daughter is taking these subjects but we can't afford a laptop. The school will still be providing computers that will be suitable for these subjects. What software will my daughter use? We are putting considerable investment into our digital environments. This will consist of Google Apps, Microsoft Office 365, Moodle Learning Management System, Mahara eportfolio all of which can be accessed anytime, anywhere, on any device, with support from other subject specific software.
