2 General Laptop Program Information Continued: I understand and agree to the following terms as the basis of my child s participation in the TENAYA LAPTOP PROGRAM during the 2016/2017 school year. 1. This is an optional curricular enhancement program offered at Tenaya. Participation is not required as part of my child s educational program; all students must follow a Code of Conduct regarding appropriate computer and Internet use for continued participation in this program. 2. I will provide a device by the first day of school that meets or exceeds the specifications along with the required software and accessories. If I fail to have all programs installed, enrollment in this optional program may be terminated. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS A device (laptop or tablet) that connects to the internet, runs Microsoft Office Home and Student, and can print. Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010 or newer. (Students will use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Trial version is not acceptable. FUSD now provides free software to be downloaded onto five devices and it is perfect for the program s needs. (A flyer with more information will accompany acceptance letter.) A working charger A 4 gig or larger flash drive A color printer at home OR- the purchase of a pre-paid TENAYA PRINTING PASSPORT (TPP) Installed / Updated Antivirus Software 3. I am responsible for maintenance and/or repairs on my personally owned equipment. I understand and agree to provide my own insurance against loss or damage and will not hold Tenaya Middle School or Fresno Unified School District responsible for any theft or other loss due to accident, neglect or vandalism. 4. In the event of loss or damage to my personally owned computer, Tenaya will attempt (but cannot guarantee) to provide a temporary computer for use in class or alternative activities during the repair or replacement period. However, I will be responsible for timely repair or replacement of my child s personal computer to ensure continued program participation and success. 5. I am responsible for providing a color printer my child can use to print their assignments OR I will purchase the pre-paid TENAYA PRINTING PASSPORT. (TPP) 6. I am aware that my child needs a flash drive for backing up work and must bring it daily. 7. I understand that continued participation in the program requires a 2.5 GPA in laptop classes. This will be reviewed quarterly, as well as annually between 7 th and 8 th grade. If a student earns lower than a C in a laptop class, they will be placed on probation until the following quarterly review. More than one quarter of probation will result in withdrawal from this program and will necessitate a full schedule change. 8. I will provide a device that meets the minimum specifications for my child to bring to school daily. 9. I understand that enrollment is not guaranteed. Those enrolled will be notified by a mailed letter before May 1, P a g e Parent s Printed Name Parent s Signature Date
3 Tenaya Middle School 1239 W. Mesa Ave Fresno, CA (559) Lisa Harrington, Principal Tenaya Laptop Program Code of Conduct Participation in the Tenaya Laptop Program is a privilege enjoyed by a select group of students at Tenaya. To ensure that this experience is beneficial to the participants, the following Code of Conduct has been set forth. Students are required to have their device, charger, and a flash drive with them each and every day of school. It is very hard to be a student in the laptop program without a laptop/device. It is the responsibility of students to have their laptop with them when they report to laptop classes. There should not be a need to retrieve a laptop from another location once class has commenced. When students are not prepared at the beginning of class, valuable time is lost. Students should print assignments from home before they are due. Another option for printing is for students to have a pre-paid TENAYA PRINTING PASSPORT (TPP) or go to a printing service such as FedEx or Kinkos. Printing may only be done before school, at the beginning of lunch, or after school. Any other time creates a disruption in class. When students are not in laptop classes, they should have their laptops stored in a laptop teacher s classroom. This greatly reduces the risk of lost or damaged laptops. When retrieving laptops from classrooms, students should not bring students who are not enrolled in the laptop program into the classroom. Strangers in laptop storage areas are an unnecessary security risk. Students should have desktop backgrounds, screen savers, etc., that are appropriate for school. Cursers should not be modified. Strange cursers make it difficult for teachers to assist you with problems. The taskbar may NOT be set to auto hide. Teachers and parents need to be able to see what programs are open. Students may not have file sharing software or anti-filter software installed on their laptops. File sharing programs gobble up bandwidth and there are legal issues. Anti-filter software gets around the school s filter that is in place to keep students and staff safe. 3 P a g e
4 Instant Messaging and games are NEVER TO BE USED AT SCHOOL. Programs such as Skype should be configured to not log on when Microsoft Windows starts. When at school, the emphasis is on learning. Instant Messaging and games are a distraction from learning. When using the internet at school, students are to be on websites related to their assignment only. Facebook and other popular social media sites would be prime examples of websites that should never be seen at school. When a student laptop is in need of repair, it should be done as quickly as possible. It is very hard to be a student in the laptop program without a laptop. Please keep teachers informed regarding repairs. Teachers will make every effort to accommodate laptop students when there are technical or mechanical issues, but only for a reasonable amount of time. While their laptop is being fixed, students are 100% responsible for staying caught up with their work. Teachers will help with brainstorming that for each class. Students are required to maintain a grade point average of no lower than 2.5 in their academic classes to remain in the laptop program. If a student s grade point average is below 2.5, it is reasonable to believe that the laptop is not helping, but rather hurting student learning. Students under the expected GPA will go on academic probation for a quarter. After two quarters, they will be removed from the program and receive a schedule change. All of the laptop program teachers maintain websites. Students shall check all of their laptop teacher s websites daily. Teachers update their websites to keep students informed; however the students will not be informed if they fail to check daily each teacher s website. Using technology in any way to create a harmful, unsafe, or intimidating environment for anyone at school will result in immediate dismissal form the Laptop for Learners Program and possible suspension or expulsion from school. Failure to comply with any item on this Code of Conduct may result in removal from the Laptop for Learners Program. This would mean a schedule change for the student. For a first offense, the student and parent are given notice. A second offense will result in removal from the laptop program. I, parent/guardian of, agree to the Tenaya Laptop Program s Code of Conduct. (Parent/Guardian signature) (Date) I understand that participation in the Tenaya Laptop Program is a privilege that can be revoked and agree to comply with the program s Code of Conduct. (Student Signature) (Date) 4 P a g e

6 If you have any questions about the Tenaya Laptop Program, information required, or the dates, please contact Tracy Owensby at: Important Dates: Feb. 2 nd Feb. 2 nd April 8 th May 1 st Parent Night Applications Available Applications Due Acceptance Letters Sent NEW! Tenaya Laptop Program Lottery for Loaner Laptops This year, we are providing access for 30 seventh grade students to join the Tenaya Laptop Program using school owned loaner laptops. This is a very exciting opportunity for those who might not otherwise be able to participate. While this important option allows your child to be involved in laptop classes at school, the laptop will not go home. Therefore, it is mandatory that you have either a laptop or computer at home that your child can use nightly for HW or projects. The free FUSD software would allow you to download and upgrade or match your home software to that of the school s laptop. If you are interested in entering your child in the Loaner Laptop Option, please fill in the information below. If your child s name is drawn, you will be notified in the Acceptance Letter. There will be a meeting regarding specifics for all those involved at a later date. I would like my child,, to be entered into the LOTTERY drawing for a Loaner Laptop. I understand that if drawn, my student will be able to be in the Tenaya Laptop Program while using a school-owned laptop. I also understand that it will be turned in every day before leaving school, and therefore I must provide a computer or laptop for my student s nightly home use. Work will be sent via flash-drive, Office 365, or google.docs. If the school laptop is damaged at school due to my student s neglect, I will be responsible for repair or replacement. Failure to do so would result in my child being removed from the Tenaya Laptop Program. Parent Signature Printed Name Date 6 P a g e
