2 General Laptop Program Information Continued: I understand and agree to the following terms in order for my child to participate in the TENAYA LAPTOP PROGRAM during the 2018/2019 school year: 1. I will provide a device, software, accessories, and access to a color printer (that meets or exceeds the requirements) for my student on the first day of school. If I fail to do so, enrollment in this optional program may be terminated. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Device: a laptop or tablet that connects to the internet, runs Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010 or newer, and can print. (You can choose the brand, size, and extras.) Software: Microsoft Office Professional Plus (2016) or newer with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. A trial version is not acceptable. FUSD now provides free software to be downloaded onto five devices and is perfect for our program s needs. For that software, please go to: go.fresno.org/edtech Internet Access: students must have consistent and daily internet access from home Accessories: a working charger, headphones/ear buds, and a 4 gig+ flash drive Printer: access to a color printer OR- purchase of a TENAYA PRINTING PASSPORT Antivirus Software: this must be installed and updated regularly 2. I am responsible for timely maintenance and/or repairs on my personally owned equipment to ensure continued participation in the Tenaya Laptop Program. 3. I understand and agree to provide my own insurance against loss or damage and will not hold Tenaya Middle School or Fresno Unified School District responsible for any theft or other loss due to accident, neglect or vandalism. In the event of loss or damage to my personally owned computer, Tenaya will attempt (but cannot guarantee) to provide a temporary computer for use in class or alternative activities during the repair or replacement period. 4. I am responsible for providing access to a color printer for my child to print their assignments. I can purchase my own, go to a local printing business when they need to print, or purchase the pre-paid TENAYA PRINTING PASSPORT. (This can be purchased at Pre-Reg. or the first month of school for $20.00.) 5. All students must follow a Code of Conduct regarding appropriate and ethical computer and Internet use for continued participation in this program. If they do not, they will be removed. 6. I understand that continued participation in the program requires a 2.5 GPA in laptop classes. Their GPA will be reviewed quarterly, as well as annually between 7 th and 8 th grade. Students earning lower than a 2.5 GPA in laptop classes will be placed on probation. Multiple quarters of probation will result in removal from this program and will necessitate a full schedule change. 7. I understand that enrollment is not guaranteed, and that this is an optional curricular program and participation is not required. Parent s Printed Name Parent s Signature Date 2 P a g e
3 Tenaya Middle School 1239 W. Mesa Ave Fresno, CA (559) Dr. Lisa Harrington, Principal Tenaya Laptop Program s Code of Conduct Participation in the Tenaya Laptop Program is a privilege enjoyed by a select group of students at Tenaya. To ensure this experience is beneficial to all participants, the following Code of Conduct has been set forth. 1. Be PREPARED: Students are required to have their device, charger, headphones/ear buds, and flash drive with them each and every day of school. These items must be brought to each laptop class. Students will be considered tardy if they do not have their required equipment with them. 2. Be RESPONSIBLE: Students should print assignments before they are due and have them ready to turn in at the beginning of class. Printing may only be done before school, at the beginning of lunch, or after school. Any other time creates a disruption. 3. Be CAREFUL: When students are not in laptop classes, their laptops should be properly stored in a laptop teacher s classroom. This greatly reduces the risk of lost or damaged laptops. When retrieving laptops from classrooms, ONLY LAPTOP STUDENTS can enter the laptop storage area. When there, they do not have permission to bring in a friend or to touch anyone else s laptop. 4. Be APPROPRIATE: Students should have desktop backgrounds and screen savers that are appropriate for school. EVERYTHING having to do with the laptop should be school appropriate. 5. Be TRANSPARENT: The taskbar may NOT be set to auto hide. Teachers and parents need to be able to see all open programs. 6. Be SAFE: Students may not have file sharing software or anti-filter software installed on their laptops. File sharing programs gobble up bandwidth and there are legal issues. Anti-filter software gets around the school s filter that is in place to keep students and staff safe. 7. Be ON TASK: Games, social media, Skype, Face-time, and Instant Messaging (and anything else that resembles these items) are NEVER TO BE USED AT SCHOOL. Programs like these should be configured to not log on when Microsoft Windows starts. When at school, the emphasis is on learning and these are distracting. *IF the teacher assigns the use of these for educational purposes, to enhance their assignment, that is a different situation. 3 P a g e
4 8. Be ACADEMIC: When using the internet at school, students are only to be on websites related to their assignment. Being on an inappropriate site (see above for a few examples) can result in the student being removed from laptop. 9. Be QUICK: When a student s laptop is in need of repair, it should be done as quickly as possible. It is very hard to be a student in the laptop program without a laptop. Please keep teachers informed regarding repairs. Teachers will make every effort to accommodate laptop students when there are technical or mechanical issues, but only for a reasonable amount of time. While their laptop is being fixed, students are 100% responsible for staying caught up with their work. Teachers will help with brainstorming strategies to keep up in each class. 10. Be SUCCESSFUL: Students are required to maintain a grade point average of no lower than 2.5 in their laptop classes to remain in the laptop program. If a student s grade point average is below 2.5, it is reasonable to believe that the laptop is not helping, but rather hurting student learning. Students under the expected GPA will go on academic probation for a quarter. After two quarters of probation, they will be removed from the program and receive a schedule change. 11. Be CURIOUS: All of the Tenaya Laptop Program teachers maintain websites/digital classrooms. Students should check these sites daily. Teachers update their sites to keep students informed; however, the students will not be informed if they fail to check daily each teacher s site. 12. Be ETHICAL: Cheating (whether digitally, student to student, or on paper) is unacceptable. Choosing to do so may result in a zero on the assignment, citizenship = N, and possibly removal from the Tenaya Laptop Program for all parties involved. *BE A KIND TECHNOLOGY USER: Using technology in any way to create a harmful, unsafe, or intimidating environment will result in the immediate dismissal from the Tenaya Laptop Program, as well as possibly be suspended or expelled from Tenaya and/or Fresno Unified School District. Failure to comply with any item on this Code of Conduct may result in removal from the Tenaya Laptop Program. This would mean a complete schedule change for the student. With the exception of the bulleted item, (which will be dealt with immediately), the first offense results in the student and parent being warned. A second offense will result in removal from the laptop program. This is a wonderful program full of great kids, and to keep it that way, we need to not worry about students doing the wrong thing. Being clear is the best way to avoid confusion about what is allowed. Hopefully, none of the above will ever be an issue. If you have any questions, please me before signing this: tracy.owensby@fresnounified.org. Tracy Owensby Tenaya Laptop Program, Coordinator We have read all of the above and agree to abide by the Tenaya Laptop Program s Code of Conduct. We understand that if the student does not follow all of the above, their participation in the Tenaya Laptop Program can be revoked. (Student Signature) (Parent Signature) (Date) 4 P a g e

6 If you have any questions about the Tenaya Laptop Program, information required, or the dates, please contact Tracy Owensby at: Important Dates: Feb. 7th: Parent Night Review of the Program and Applications Available Feb. 8 th : Applications Available in Tenaya s Front Office and on: fresnounified.org/schools/tenaya April 6 th : Completed Applications Due May 1 st : Acceptance Letters Sent and ed Tenaya Laptop Program Lottery for Loaner Laptops This year, we are providing access for 25 seventh grade students to join the Tenaya Laptop Program using school owned loaner laptops. This is a very exciting opportunity for those who might not otherwise be able to participate. While this important option allows your child to be involved in laptop classes at school, the laptop will not go home. Therefore, it is mandatory that you have either a laptop or computer at home that your child can use nightly for HW or projects. The free FUSD software would allow you to match your home software to that of the school s laptop. If you are interested in entering your child in the Loaner Laptop lottery, please fill in the information below. If your child s name is drawn, you will be notified in the Acceptance Letter. There will be a meeting regarding specifics for all those involved at a later date. Please read carefully, this is ONLY for those who WANT TO BE IN THE LOTTERY: I would like my child,, to be entered into the LOTTERY drawing for a Loaner Laptop. I understand that if drawn, my student will be able to be in the Tenaya Laptop Program while using a school-owned laptop. I also understand that it will be turned in every day before leaving school, and therefore I must provide a computer or laptop for my student s nightly home use. Work will be sent via flash-drive, Office 365, or google.docs. If the school laptop is damaged at school due to my student s neglect, I will be responsible for repair or replacement. Failure to do so would result in my child being removed from the Tenaya Laptop Program. Parent Signature Printed Name Date 6 P a g e
