When the connection process is complete, the screen shown to the left will appear. 14

3.2 PC30 DATA COLLECTION With the System 30 Timer connected to your PC, this version of the PC30 software allows you to obtain raw car data from the System 30 Timer, store the data in files and import it into spreadsheet software. Sections through describe the data format and file management operations associated with the raw car data. Sections and tell you how to collect the raw car data. If you have further questions, refer to the Help menu instructions described in section 3.3. NOTE: To prevent all of your raw car data from going to the same file, you must use the Store ID number that has been set up in the System 30 Timer at each store you will be collecting data from, as described in the System 30 Installation/Maintenance Instructions Raw Car Data Format As shown in the following table, the format of the raw car data is ASCII text with either tab or comma delimiters (boundaries) between major fields such as DATE, TIME, EVENTS, QUEUE EVENTS, etc. Each line is followed by a new line character (5). This format allows the raw car data to be imported into spreadsheet and database applications for analysis. Refer to section 3.2.5! For multi-store businesses, the event names stored in the raw car data may vary from store to store. To allow stores with different lane setups to be combined for analysis in a spreadsheet, the raw car data files include entries for all possible event names.! The raw car data files also include entries for all possible queue event times which follow events. Thus, there is a QMenu field since the event name Menu may have been assigned to a detection point, and there may be an assigned detection point after Menu. ----Departure Date Time EVENTS (in seconds) Date Time Alert... Menu... Service... 12/01/97" "03:21 pm" /01/97" "03:22 pm" /01/97" "03:23 pm" QUEUE EVENTS LANE/QUEUE/STORE Data QAlert QMenu Lane CarsInQ Event StoreID Car_Departure Car_Departure Car_Departure 1 The raw car data is recorded in one of two files, STOREID.RC1 or STOREID.RC2. The.RC1 files are used to store raw car data when updating the database (see section 3.2.6). The.RC2 files are used to store raw car data for specific dates and times (see section 3.2.7). STOREID is based on the Store ID of the System 30 Timer being accessed. As the raw car data is collected for a given raw car data request, it is added to the existing.rc1 or.rc2 file for that store. These files will continue to grow until the data contained in them is properly archived, as described in section

3.2.2 Archive Procedure Regular archiving of PC30 files is important for several reasons:! To avoid losing new data from the System 30 Control Unit.! To avoid having imported.txt file size exceed your spreadsheet program s record limit.! To conserve disk space on your PC. In order to archive raw car data files, the.rc1 and.rc2 files must be renamed as.txt files with a unique file name prefix (e.g. STOREID-date.TXT). These text files can then be imported into a spreadsheet or saved in an archive folder. After an.rc1 or.rc2 file has been renamed, the PC30 will automatically create a new.rc1 or.rc2 file the next time raw car data is gathered from that System 30 Timer. Since the PC30 continuously adds data to the existing.rc1 and.rc2 files, it is important for you to archive the raw car data that is being collected in order to avoid filling up the disk space where these files are located Spreadsheet Data Format When raw car data is imported into a spreadsheet program that supports the use of tab or comma delimited data, it can be placed in tables for further analysis as shown in the following table. This is an example of a typical spreadsheet with raw car data transferred from the System 30 Timer via the PC30. Date Time Greet Menu* Service QMenu* Lane CarsInQ Event Store ID 10/04/98 12:02 PM Car 5368 Departure 10/04/98 12:07 PM Car 5368 Departure 10/04/98 12:08 PM Car 5368 Departure 10/04/98 12:12 PM Car 5368 Departure 10/04/98 12:15 PM Car 5368 Departure 10/04/98 12:21 PM Car Departure 5368 * The Menu column (for example) lists the time a car spent at the detector associated with the Menu Board, and QMenu lists the time spent between the Menu Board and the Service Window. Microsoft Excel is recommended as the spreadsheet for importing of the.txt files derived from the.rc1 and.rc2 files. Other spreadsheet programs capable of importing tab or comma delimited text files may also be used to import the raw car data. NOTE: Some spreadsheet programs have a limit to the number of lines of text they can import. Because of this limit, the.rc1 and.rc2 files should be archived when these files approach the spreadsheet program's limits. For example, Excel s limit is 16,192 lines. Since each line of raw car data coincides with an individual car, a limit of data for 16,192 cars can be collected before an Excel spreadsheet will begin to lose data. In order to not lose data when importing.rc1 or.rc2 files into Excel spreadsheets, your files should be archived on a regular basis as described in section The frequency of archiving your data will depend on the level of activity through each store's drive-thru. 16

The following example shows how the collected data can be used to compute useful times, such as Total Experience Time. Total drive-thru experience time calculations depend on what events are used in the calculations. Example: Menu + QMenu + Service = Total Experience Time In some situations, it may not be desirable to include time spent at the menu board in the caluclation. Example: QMenu + Service = Total Experience Time (not including menu board) NOTE: Greet time is not included in total time calculations. Greet time is the amount of time it takes the drive-thru crew to greet a drive-thru customer at the order point Frequency of Collection of Raw Car Data Raw car data should be collected as described in Section on a regular basis in order to not lose any of the data that is continuously being recorded on the System 30 Timer. If the disk space for raw car data storage is full, new data being recorded will overwrite the oldest data in the System 30 Timer. The following table shows System 30 maximum vehicle storage capability, and can be used as a guide to the frequency at which the raw car data should be archived. Detection Points Used for Each Lane One Lane 14,000 9,800 7,500 6,000 5,100 4,400 Two Lane 14,000 9,800 7, Six Lane 14, If for example, a store has two detection points and two lanes, the System 30 timer is able to store raw car data for up to 9,800 cars before any records are written over. If this store serves 500 cars a day in both lanes, the PC30 will need to collect the raw car data at least once every 9,800/500 = 19 days. You will need to determine the data collection frequency of each store based on this table and the average number of cars the store serves Setting a File Delimiter Before importing the data to your spreadsheet software, you must set the file delimiter required by the spreadsheet software you are using. Delimiters are the characters used to separate data and cause it to go into various locations on a spreadsheet. Select Set File Delimiter from the Database menu. Consult your spreadsheet software manual or Help files to find out if the delimiters should be tabs or commas. Select Tab or Comma for the correct delimiter type. 17

3.2.6 Collecting All Available Raw Car Data You can collect all raw car data available for any store you have selected on the Dial/Edit Store screen shown in section by following the instructions below. Select Database from the main menu. Select Update Database from the Database menu. NOTE: You must disconnect from one System 30 Timer before you can collect data from a second System 30 Timer (see section 3.4) The first time Update Database is selected, the PC30 will collect all available raw car data collected by the System 30 Timer in the last 60 days. The data will be stored as an ASCII file, which can be imported into spreadsheet software. Each time Update Database is selected again, it will add all new raw car data collected by the timer since the last time the database (the ASCII file) was updated. NOTE: Only raw car data currently stored in the timer can be retrieved. Refer to section While the database is being updated, a sweeping asterisks activity display will appear. NOTE: You cannot make menu selections while data is being collected. When DONE appears on your computer screen, the data will have been stored as an ASCII file, and will be ready to import into a spreadsheet. The file is named as the store ID number with the file extension.rc2, and can be found in the directory C:\PC30\Database, assuming you installed the PC30 software in c:\pc30. Data collected from several stores will be found in the same directory, in files named with each store s ID number. When updating data from more than one remote store location, you must dial the modem number of each store using the Dial/Edit Store screen shown in section 3.1.4, and update the database of each store separately. 18

3.2.7 Collecting Raw Car Data for Specific Dates You can collect raw car data for any number of consecutive dates, for any store you have selected on the Dial/Edit Store screen in section 3.1.4, by following the instructions below. Select Reports from the main menu. Select Raw Car Data from the Reports menu. NOTE: Grayed-out selections are not available in this version of PC30. Select the beginning and ending dates for the report from the drop-down menus under Month, Day and Year on the Raw Car Data Report menu. Enter the beginning and ending times for the report under Hour, then select OK. While the data is being collected, a sweeping asterisks activity display will appear. NOTE: You cannot make menu selections while data is being collected. When DONE appears on your computer screen, the data will have been stored as an ASCII file, and will be ready to import into a spreadsheet. The file is named as the store ID number with the file extension.rc1, and can be found in the directory C:\PC30\Database, assuming you installed the PC30 software in c:\pc30. Data collected from several stores will be found in the same directory, in files named with each store s ID number. If there is a preexisting.rc1 file and a second raw car data request is made, the new data will be added to the existing.rc1 file. To avoid adding data to an existing.rc1 file, archive each file as described in section When obtaining raw car data from more than one remote store location, you must dial the modem number of each store using the Dial/Edit Store screen shown in section 3.1.4, and run raw car data reports for each store separately. 19

3.2.8 Monitoring Car Data The Monitor Car Data feature of the PC30 allows you to observe current drive-thru activity from a store s System 30, during normal operating hours. Up to 100 car data entries (lines) can be displayed, after which the oldest entry will be discarded as each new entry appears. Select General from the main menu. Select Monitor Car Data from the General menu to open Monitor Car Data from System 30" menu. Select START to begin monitoring drive-thru activity at the first detector. Waiting for Next Car... will be displayed until the next car arrives at the first detector in the drive-thru lane. 20

As each car departs the drive-thru lane in the selected store, an entry will appear on the PC30 display on your computer. Each line represents one timer event, which may be a car, a power failure, a system reset, etc. Times for cars that complete the normal drive-thru process are shown below each of the respective headings on the heading line. For example, for a lane that includes a menu board and service window, the heading line would be like the one shown to the left, including the following: Depart: the time a car departs the service window. MENU: the amount of time a car spent at the menu board or speaker post. SERVI: the amount of time a car spent at the service window. TOTAL: the total time a car spent in the drive-thru lane, from its arrival at the menu board or speaker post to its departure from the service window.
