Construct an original plane figure design using coordinates on the coordinate plane. Plan and develop a list of new coordinates for an original plane figure design where the figure has been transformed, reflected, rotated, or dilated along the design s origin. Interpret directions to re-create an original plane figure design that has been transformed, reflected, rotated, or dilated along the design s origin. Analyze coordinate plane puzzle directions and offer solutions to problems with the coordinates or their directions. Compare and contrast one plane figure design with another plane figure design that has been transformed, reflected, rotated, or dilated along the figure s origin. 3 This project is a peer exchange of creative mathematical works. Learning the coordinate plane is always fun and students enjoy the many coordinate plane puzzles they are given to solve and color as extra practice, but it is never really taken past that extra practice level. Students practice for internalization of the concept, but they never really make meaning of the learning for real-world application. The Coordinate Plan Exchange is here to do just that while integrating Internet technology in to the classroom. The Coordinate Plane Exchange is a telecollaborative project seated in the Problem Solving Activity Structure of Peer Feedback that Judi Harris categorized. In this type of structure, students post something original and peer feedback is offered from somewhere else. Description/Summary of the Project Plan During the Coordinate Plane Exchange, a variety of schools worldwide are paired together and students within each will be paired to create their own plane figure design on a labeled coordinate plane. The same pair of students will choose to transform, rotate, reflect, or dilate their plane figure design along its origin and create a list of the new set of coordinates so that the plane figure design can be created again in its new location/way. Teachers will assist students in uploading an image of their labeled coordinate plane with plane figure design and their new directions for the plane figure design via and the Internet for their partner school to see. At the partner schools, the true challenge then begins! Partner schools will download the new directions for the plane figure design, label a coordinate plane and piece together the puzzle of the plane figure design. They will compare and contrast the original design with the new one and write a reflection of how the plane figure was transformed, reflected, rotated, or dilated and offer suggestions if something seemed to of went wrong in the process. The coordinates, original plane figure design, re-drawn plane figure design, and reflection are scanned and uploaded to the Internet using the Coordinate Plane Exchange website. The Coordinate Plane Exchange is entirely form-based and does not require the teacher or student to know any HTML code. As a finale, galleries of works are published, and feedback is provided via . 3

5 Website Plan Design (cont d) Detailed Descriptions of Important Graphics, Tables, or Charts Overall Look and Feel: Home Page: Contact Information Page: About Page: Project Summary Page: FAQ s Page: Login Page: The primary look and feel throughout the entire website will be set by a labeled coordinate plane background and a top navigation bar which will have navy blue lettering and be golden yellow with a student created coordinate plane picture on it. The picture will be different on each individual page though. The top navigation bar will include the following links: About, Login, Teacher Page, Student Page, and Gallery. This page will contain a collage of coordinate plane pictures. It will have a navigation bar on the top and the left-hand corner of the screen. The side navigation bar will have the following links: About, Login, Sign Up, and Contact Information. The text and graphics on this page will be contained within a table. The table will have a picture of the project organizer on it along with contact information and a short blurb about who the project organizer is. The text and graphics on this page will also be contained within a table. This page will have a side navigation bar with the following links: Contact Information, Project Summary and FAQ s. There will be a collage of student designs and a short blurb about the section and what is contained in it in the center. This page will include the summary of the project as stated above. This page will be built overtime and will contain answers to questions asked to the project organizer. This page will contain a place for teachers to input there login information for uploading their students works to the website. This page will also route to a sign up page if they do not have a log in or to a help screen if they have forgotten their username or password. 5

The page will have a description of each link on the side navigation bar. The text on this page will also be contained within a table. This page will contain a link and description of lesson plans for each grade level which will include objectives/goals, materials, an authentic problem, and a sequence of events. The text on this page will also be contained within a table. This page will contain links to teacher resources (online games, lessons, presentations, worksheets, etc.) about the 6

This page will contain a calendar with days and directions for each day for completing The Coordinate Plane Exchange Project. The following links will be included: Featured Design, Featured Classroom, and Coordinate Plane Designs (Current Postings). In the future it will include more side links to years past of the project so that students can always view past work. The featured design will be a picture of that particular design that the viewer can click on and see all other work involved. The text and graphics on this page will also be contained within a table. This page will include the drawings, directions, and reflections of a featured design selected by the project organizer. The text and graphics on this page will also be contained within a table. This page will include information about the featured classroom, a picture of those in the featured classroom, and some of the drawings selected by the project organizer. This page will contain a world map with links in participating locations. When you click on the links, it will show classroom works that have been posted during the current school year. 7

8 Directions for Joining the Project: This information would appear on the Sign Up page that is linked to the Home Page and the Login page. When signing up, teachers would need to simply fill out the form which would go directly to the project organizer via containing basic contact information, location, commitment level, and dates or holidays that would cause a gap in the project timeline. Plan For Managing the Project Timeline for the Project: Procedures for Participation: Description of Student Work: Because school systems run on the same basic calendar schedule the project would be set up for those dates and would run each classroom pair in a sixty day timeline from introduction of coordinate plane instruction to final reflections and posting of materials after classroom switches occur. Once teachers have been paired, it is really up to their collaborative effort as to how they want to complete the project. The participation can occur at an asynchronous level but within a period of participation established by the collaborating teachers. The collaborating teachers will be present to provide feedback to students to ensure the project designs and directions being sent to the site are appropriate and applicable and to ensure the renditions and reflections of those designs are accurate and informative. All drawings, directions, and reflections uploaded to the site will be posted by the project organizer. Pairs of students will create their own plane figure design on a labeled coordinate plane. The same pair of students will choose to transform, rotate, reflect, or dilate their plane figure design along its origin and create a list of the new set of coordinates so that the plane figure design can be created again in its new location/way. When it reaches the partner school, they will download the new directions for the plane figure design, label a coordinate plane and create the plane figure design. They will 8

9 Plan For Managing the Project Description of Project End: compare and contrast the original design with the new one and write a reflection of how the plane figure was transformed, reflected, rotated, or dilated and offer suggestions if something seemed to of went wrong in the process. The project will end based on the parameters established by collaborating teachers as long as it is during the normal span of approximately sixty days and during the season of school. All projects will be submitted to the project organizer by the collaborating teachers and will be posted in the gallery under the appropriately linked timeline and the correct location on the map. 9
