1 DRM Guidance A Guide on How to Resolve Common Problems with Accessing the Online Course Reading

2 Recommended Settings For all of our courses delivered through Moodle, the modular course reading is contained within protected PDF documents. This step by step guide is designed to help you resolve some of the common issues that you might experience when attempting to open these protected PDF documents. Due to the nature of the digital protection, we recommend the following setup on your device is in place, prior to accessing the PDF reading: You have an up to date version of internet explorer downloaded on your device. You launch/run Moodle through Internet Explorer (optimum browser). You have Adobe Reader downloaded on your device. If you need to download Internet Explorer, you can do so at GB/internet explorer/download ie. If you need to download Adobe Reader, you can do so at Please note, if you have an apple device (excluding the ipad) you will need to download an alternative browser to Safari (we recommend Chrome) and Adobe Reader. You will then need to adjust the settings of both (in line with the information provided below), to view the course reading. Whilst we recommend accessing the material through Internet Explorer, there are a number of alternative browsers that also work fine. The following information sets out how to resolve common issues that arise when using Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

3 Troubleshooting 1 Issues When Running Internet Explorer A common problem that can occur when attempting to access the protectedd PDF reading is, after entering your username and password and clicking submit, an error e message appearss (shown in figure 1 below); this is the global object security policy error message. Figure 1 The document will then close. To solve this problem follow the instructions below. 1. Open a blank version of Adobe Reader (shown in figure 2). Figure 2

Click the edit tab (the second item from the menu bar at the top of the Adobe Reader application) and select the preferences tab (at the bottomm of the list of options from the edit tab, see figure 3). There is also a shortcut to the preferences that can usually be reached by pressing Ctrl + K together on the keyboard. Figure 3 3. You should then see the preferences s menu (figure 4).

5 Figure 4 4. In the preferences menu you need to uncheck (so that theree is no tick showing in the box) the third menu item that states Enable global object security policy. The preferences menu should now look like figure 5 on the next page.

6 Figure 5 5. Then you need to click ok (in the right hand corner of thee preferences menu) to save your changes. This should return you to the original blank Adobe Reader page. You can noww close this application and attempt to access the PDF again. The problems that you were having should now have been solved.

7 Troubleshooting 2 Issues When Running Google Chrome If you are having problems accessing the course reading through Google Chrome, you need to adjust the plugin settings. 1. Launch a new search through Google Chrome and enter into the URLL address at the top of the page, chrome;//plugins (figuree 6). Figure 6 2. Once you are on the plugin page (figure 7), find Chrome PDF Viewer and click the option below it to Disable and then find Adobe Reader and click Enable, and ensure Always Allowed is ticked.

9 Troubleshooting 3 Issues When Running Mozilla Firefox If you cannot view the material on Firefox, I would recommend the following: 1. When you are on the Firefox homepage, presss ALT+T+O to t open thee browser options, and select Applications. If this does not open the applications menu, you can easily open the menu manually by clicking on the settings option along the bottom of the screen, and selecting applications (figure 8). Then you must ensure that under the heading Content Type, anything that says s Adobe, and/or Portable Document Formatt (PDF) has Use Adobe Acrobat (default) selected alongside it under the heading Action (figure 9).
