3 6SigmaDC R8 Overview In 2012, Future Facilities conducted our most comprehensive customer feedback survey to date. As part of our continued commitment to the electronics and data center supply chain, we wanted Release 8 of the 6SigmaDC suite to deliver the functionality and features that matter most. You talked. We listened. With your help, we ve made more than 300 enhancements to Release 8 (R8). We ve delivered drastically improved integration; a faster solver that can handle jobs in batches; improved discoverability for new and infrequent users; and much faster performance. Experienced users asked us to make their daily lives and regular tasks easier. With R8, we ve simplified our interface and streamlined the most commonly used features. Casual users asked us to help them self-discover our suite. R8 is more discoverable than ever. New on-screen controls make model manipulation intuitive and easy, and we ve added on-screen hints and tips to guide you through daily actions. You asked us to make it faster. We ve delivered speed like you ve never seen it before. Whether you re solving a fine grid in a large model, or manipulating a complex model, R8 does it faster and smoother than even we thought possible. And we re not done yet. 4 R8 Highlights Sketch Walls Making Room Building Like Child s Play A new sketch walls tool makes model creation a smooth, rapid and intuitive process. Import CAD planes for guided sketching, or sketch completely from scratch. Options for snapping, setting wall lengths and shifting CAD origins are all embedded in the tool, meaning that you can easily create complex rooms in no time at all. Batch Solver Submit. Pack up. Go Home The new Batch Solver revolutionises the way that models are solved. You can now submit jobs to one queue and allow the batch server to farm out the processing to one or more connected machines. This will ensure faster turnaround of results, and maximise both your hardware and your 6SigmaDC license potential. Additionally, you can work on a model on a laptop, submit it to the batch server, and then disconnect from the network while it solves. Discoverable Interface Making Your Life Easier Release 8 represents the first phase of a multi-release project to make the 6SigmaDC suite more intuitive, usable and discoverable. Extended tooltips offer better description of objects and tools, with direct links to the help documentation and how-to videos. On-screen hints, on-screen controls and confirmation of actions guide users through the model building process. Performance Faster. Much Faster Performance of common operations has been vastly improved, giving you quicker model builds, navigation and results analysis, especially for large models and when loading over a network. Overall, Release 8 is 2x faster than R7.1; manipulating the model is up to 6x quicker; loading results up to 5x quicker; and creating geometry up to 3x quicker. Other New Features: New welcome screen with links to online resources, videos and recent models Animated transitions of the graphical view to give user a better point of reference for viewing the models Angled result planes allow results to be visualised at any angle Profile plots and plot collections are now stored with the model Improvements made the vertical ducts allowing for multiple drops at a single location Equipment plots have been separated into cabinet and equipment plots to allow for results to be shown on either the cabinet or the IT equipment within the room view. 5 Discoverable Interface Welcome Screen On launch, a new welcome screen appears giving you links to What s New videos, tutorials, the User Support site and other resources, and the last five models you have opened. A Getting Started area helps new users start using the software. Tip: uncheck the Show at Start Up box to prevent the Welcome Screen from showing next time you launch the application. 6 New Controls New user controls mean that you no longer have to use the CTRL key when rotating a model it s much quicker and more intuitive. The legacy user control defaults can be reverted to if experienced users don t like the change. If you want to manipulate the model using only left mouse clicks, click or drag the on-screen controls to rotate, pan and zoom. Tip: right-click the on-screen controls and select Hide On-Screen Controls to remove them from the graphical view. To make them visible again, right-click the graphical view and select Show On-Screen Controls. Extended Tooltips Improved tooltips with more information, handy tips and tricks. 8 Animated Transitions Transitions between the 2D views are now smoothly animated to allow you to see which direction you are viewing the model from. 9 Performance Improvements Faster grid generation STL shape analysis up to 20x faster Faster region generation for model verification and solving Graphics performance improvements Fast View Manipulation makes manipulating large models significantly faster for the duration of panning and rotation, it hides objects smaller than a certain size Tip: turn this on or off, or set the minimum size, using the right click menu in the graphical view New method of rendering graphics to take advantage of new graphics hardware technologies. 10 Functionality Batch Solver The new Batch Server replaces the Batch Dialog. It connects to both clients running other 6SigmaDC Applications and to CFDServers on the network. Multiple clients can simultaneously submit models from the 6SigmaDC applications to the Batch Server, then disconnect and leave the Batch Server to run through a queue of jobs. This allows you to make full use of your CFDServers. Because Batch Server makes use of the Version Tree, you can now look at models while they are solving. When a version is sent to the Batch Server, new versions can still be created and modified, allowing simultaneous solving and modification of a single model file (applicable only to those applications with a Version Tree). The Batch Server Viewer is a small application running in the system tray that can be used to quickly send any 6SigmaDC models to the Batch Server with minimal load times. You can now send a job to a remote batch server and then disconnect from the network. This will allow laptop users to submit jobs, switch off and reconnect at a later time to retrieve the data. futurefacilities.com Future Facilities Ltd., London, UK. Page 9

11 Sketch Walls A much improved Sketch Walls feature makes setting up your room geometry quick and easy. Import CAD to quickly sketch around the walls. Set wall length or split walls into segments when you right click on a wall Set the origin to 0,0 and move the CAD plane accordingly Angled Result Planes Result Planes can now be angled in all three dimensions. The orientation in the property sheet can be set to xyz. 12 Profile Plots and Collections Profile plots allow you to show how a given variable (temperature, for example) varies across the model at a user-defined set of positions. Profile Plots are now saved with the model. Profile Plot Collections allow you to display multiple Profile Plots on one plot. 13 IT and Cabinet Plots The IT plots from R7.1 have now been split into Cabinet Plots and IT Equipment plots. You can now plot data on either the cabinet itself or the IT equipment housed inside. 14 6SigmaPower Improvements New 2-pole power connections Inline Power connectors have multiple sockets Main Circuit Breakers now allow multiple panels to be connected to a main breaker. 2- and 3-phase breakers clearly show which breaker slots are used on a panel Improved CSV import of power connections to quickly connect the model 6SigmaLibrary Over 350 new library items, including the G8 Proliant range, Airedale s OnRak rear door heat exchanger and more than 100 Brocade items. 15 Useful Enhancements Add any object to an existing view. If you are currently looking at a view of multiple objects and want to add something to the view, you can right click on any object to add it. A new result plane button on the toolbar makes it much easier to create result planes. The right-click Move By direction is now determined by the specific blue handle you click. You no longer need to know which direction is + or. You can now find all hidden objects using the Find tool. This very useful feature helps modelling, error checking and understanding results Simulation results can now be added to holes if required. Set this in the Solution Control property sheet attribute under Stored Simulation Results. Pressure drop has been added to the Simulation Results for Heat Exchanger, Filter, Evaporative Cooling Pad, Perforated Plate and Porous Obstructions. futurefacilities.com Future Facilities Ltd., London, UK. 16 When you import equipment from either a CSV or asset management tool, improved mapping logic in our 6SigmaLibrary takes over. When you click unmapped IT equipment, the R8 logic automatically searches the 6SigmaLibrary for the longest string in the name (2511 in the example to the right). This will speed up the mapping process significantly. If a fan is running with a de-rated fan curve (controlling RPM, for example), the Operating Fan Curve in the simulation results now shows the original fan curve (in grey) and the de-rated fan curve on the same graph. futurefacilities.com Future Facilities Ltd., London, UK.
