1 Smarties Estimate and Count ACTIVITY 1 STEP 1: DO NOT OPEN THE SMARTIES This activity will teach you how to use spreadsheets. You will use a box of Smarties to compile data to complete the spreadsheet. DO NOT EAT THE SMARTIES UJNTIL YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS ACTIVITY. 1. Open Google Sheets / Open Microsoft Excel 2. On your screen you will now see Microsoft Excel Book 1 3. Save the spreadsheet as LastnameFirstname_SmartiesEstimate a. Excel i. Go to Save As in the File Menu ii. Save on your hard drive iii. Rename: LastnameFirstname_SmartiesEstimate iv. Click the Save button b. Google Sheets i. Rename the document as LastnameFirstname_SmartiesEstimate LABEL YOUR SPREADSHEET 4. Using the example below, enter the labels to identify the various parts of the spreadsheet. Be sure to enter each label in the correct cell. Use correct capitalization and spelling
2 5. Save your document 6. Before opening your Smarties Box you must: a. Estimate/Guess the total number of Smarties in the box b. Estimate the total number of Smarties of each colour you think you may find in the box i. Enter your estimate into your spreadsheet in row 8 (ESTIMATE) ii. Make sure your total of each colour adds up to the total number you estimated in the box iii. In cell L8 type the following formula: 1. =sum(c8:j8) 2. The total of all coloured Smarties should appear 3. Double check the calculation 7. Your spreadsheet should be similar to the example below. 8. Open your box of Smarties (use a paper towel on your desk and then place your Smarties on the paper). 9. Divide your Smarties according to colour
3 10. Enter your results into your spreadsheet in row 14 (ACTUAL COUNT) a. In cell L14 type the following formula: i. =sum(c14:j14) ii. The total of all coloured Smarties should appear iii. Double check the calculation 11. Your spreadsheet should look like the example below: 12. Collect all your Smarties and return them to the box. (DO NOT EAT) FORMULAS It is now time to double check all of your work 13. Check to make sure you entered a formula in cell L8 a. =sum(c8:j8) 14. Check that you entered a formula in cell L14 a. =sum(c14:j14) b. OR c. Copy and paste the formula from cell L8 to cell L In cell C18 enter a formula to calculate the difference a. =C8-C14 b. Copy the formula in cell C18 i. Control C c. Paste the formula into the other cells along row 18 i. Control V
4 16. Your spreadsheet should look like the example below: 17. Notice in cell E18 and cell H18 there was a negative value, it means that you were short on your guess as to how many Smarties were actually in the box. If the number is a positive value, it means that you were over on your guess as the number of Smarties that were found in the box. FORMATTING THE SPREADSHEET (amounts will have to be adjusted for Google Sheets) 18. Change the font size a. Highlight cells A1 to L18 b. Change the size to Change the width of Column A a. Place the cursor in cell A1 b. Select Format from the Main Menu c. Select Column d. Select Width e. Select AutoFit Selection 20. Change the width of Columns C to J a. Highlight columns C to J b. Select Format from the Main Menu c. Select Column d. Select Width e. Change to 1.5cm 21. Change the width of Column B and K to 1cm 22. Change the width of Column L to AutoFit Selection 23. Save your assignment 24. You spreadsheet should look like the example below:
5 25. Change the height of Row 1 a. Place the cursor in cell A1 b. Select Format from the Main Menu c. Select Row Height d. Change to 1cm 26. Format the title: Smarties a. Place the cursor in cell A1 b. Select Home from the Main Menu c. Change the font size to 18 d. Change the font style to Bold CREATING A CHART 27. Highlight cells C12 to J Choose Insert from the Main Menu 29. Select Chart select Column Select 2D Column 30. Add your Chart Title a. Under Chart Layout b. Select Chart Title c. Select Title Above Chart d. Type in your following title: Smarties Colour Count Actual 31. Highlight cells C6 to J8 32. Choose Insert from the Main Menu 33. Select Chart select Column Select 2D Column 34. Add your Chart Title a. Under Chart Layout b. Select Chart Title c. Select Title Above Chart d. Type in your following title: Smarties Colour Count Estimate 35. Open your box of Smarties from Ms. Hanson 36. Sort the Smarties by colour
6 37. Create a histogram to resemble you re your chart by placing the same colours one above the other in the order that they appear in your chart. 38. Do they look similar? 39. Change the colours of the columns to match the Smartie colour that they represent. a. Click on the first column until only it is highlighted (twice slowly) b. Use the Paint Bucket icon by the font box to choose the new colour for the column / or double click the highlighted column and change the fill colour. c. Repeat for each colour
