Drilling Guidance System for the Office Quick Tips

1 Overview The Pason Drilling Guidance System (DGS) provides real-time guidance while drilling, based on data that has been analyzed in the office. It helps optimize communication between drilling rig crews and the office personnel who support them. Drilling engineers begin the process by entering reference trace information into a drill plan and then uploading the plan to the Pason DataHub, where it is sent to the rig. From there, drillers can view these traces on the rig EDR, side-by-side with their real-time traces. Office personnel can also view the same data using Pason Live Rig View (LRV). This document contains the essential information for getting started with DGS. It s written for office personnel, primarily drilling engineers. DataHub Requirements For full use of DGS, you must enable the following DataHub privileges: Drilling Guidance System Live Rig View Upload Drill Plan You can also disable Live Rig View or Upload Drill Plan to use DGS without allowing access to that particular functionality. 2 Drill Plan Requirements Before you upload a drill plan to the DataHub, ensure the following: The drill plan is in.csv format, as shown in the figure below, and is 5 MB or smaller. The drill plan contains one or more of the following reference traces and the associated data: bit RPM, differential pressure, MSE, on bottom ROP, rotary RPM, rotary torque, total pump output, or WOB. The appropriate units are assigned for each reference trace listed above (e.g., feet, klbs). Figure 2: Sample drill plan Note: You can add annotations (short messages) to your drill plan in the following categories: hazards, formation tops, and general information. A drill plan can contain a maximum of 2600 annotations. Additional Requirements for H&P and Nabors Rigs Your torque and rotary traces may be listed under a custom name, which may differ from the Pasonspecific names. To use DGS, you must identify these traces before you can upload a drill plan to the DataHub for use at the rig. To update these traces, follow these steps: 1. Identify your custom torque and rotary traces. 2. Copy these values into the drill plan.csv file under the Rotary Torque column and the Rotary RPM column. 3. 3 Preparing your Drill Plan To prepare your drill plan for upload to the Pason DataHub, from the well home page, select Drilling Guidance System on the left sidebar, or under Drilling Guidance System in the centre panel. Figure 3: Select Drilling Guidance System The Drill Plan Editor page opens and displays the following options: View Trace Units. Verify that the units for your drill plan are correct. Download Template. Download a.csv file that contains the headings and columns for your drill plan reference traces. Enter your trace data in this file and save it to your computer to upload. Find Offset Wells. Search for nearby wells by well or rig name, and download a drill plan that contains the trace data for that particular well. Edit this data as desired and save the file to your computer to upload. Upload. Select if you already have a drill plan available to upload. 4 Figure 4: Drill Plan Editor page Uploading your Drill Plan Follow these steps to upload your drill plan to the Pason DataHub: 1. Click Upload from the Manage your Drill Plan section of the Drill Plan Editor page. The Upload Drill Plan dialog opens. 2. Click Browse to select a drill plan to upload, then click Upload. 3. Click Close on the dialog when the drill plan uploads successfully. When the drill plan uploads, it appears in the table at the bottom of the Drill Plan Editor page. 5 Column Drill Plan Revision Upload Date Date Activated on Rig Currently Activated on Rig Uploaded by Drill Plan File Description Shows the version number of the latest uploaded drill plan. Indicates the date and time the DataHub user sent the drill plan to the rig. Indicates the date and time the rig began using this drill plan. If the rig receiving the drill plan is in a different time zone than the DataHub user who uploaded the drill plan, these times may not match. A green check mark indicates which drill plan the rig is using. The DataHub user who uploaded the drill plan. A link to view the drill plan. The rig EDR checks for a new drill plan about every 10 minutes. Once the EDR has acquired a new drill plan and made it active, click the Refresh button. This refreshes the table and indicates which drill plan is being used by the rig, and when it was activated. Select the Auto Refresh option to automatically refresh the table every 30 seconds. When the rig receives the drill plan, LRV displays a memo, indicating that you can view the drill plan reference traces. You can do this by clicking the Drilling Guidance System button on the Setup View pane on the right side of the LRV screen. Note: If LRV doesn t display the Drilling Guidance System button, make sure the Drilling Guidance System plugin for LRV is enabled on the DataHub. Revoking or Editing a Drill Plan If a drill plan contains errors, click the Revoke button so that it doesn t display on the rig EDR. When you revoke a drill plan, the target traces and other DGS-related information are no longer visible on the rig EDR, and you see Revoked on the Drill Plan Editor page. Any drill plan data already completed will remain on the rig screens, in addition to drill plan data from previous drill plans. If you edit the drill plan for any reason, you must upload it to the DataHub again so it can be re-sent to the rig. Revised April 13, 2016 Revision 7 of DOCU280, Copyright Page 5 of 5
