3 Requirements / Tips Included in Excel 95 version forward. Later versions have more features. Table of data must have row-record structure and a top row with unique headers for each column - technically called a Data List No blank (skipped) rows although blank cells work inside the perimeters Quick selection of perimeter data by <Ctrl><Shift>8 before you start the Wizard. <Ctrl>z can undo most changes Start simple and build complexity Take a couple of Excel Classes or work through an Excel Guide Practice makes perfect
4 Step 1 - Select the Data to Analyze Highlight the area containing the data. Click in a cell within your List and Ctrl-Shift-8 Under Data menu Pivot Table and Pivot Chart Report This starts the Pivot Table Wizard

11 Going Further: Right-click on the Pivot Table and start the Wizard again. 1. Using Layout, add Charge field to the data area and 2. Double-click for other options: Sum, Average, Minimum, Maximum, and others Number type and formatting ($) Other options for advanced analysis
12 Sort, Filter, Format, and Output Sort any column from menu or button. Pivot the sorted column to display across data if desired. Filter by selecting field in any area and checking boxes. Select Print Area Include the Page Area for reference if you have Filtered
13 Filter - Restricting Data Displayed: The Page, Row, and Column areas allow selections. Right click on these areas to see options Be careful to watch what is selected when you copy or print.
14 Subgroup Data to Simplify and Summarize 1. Right Click in Data Column to group 2. Select appropriate grouping
15 Other Features Drill down on any Total Exports that data to a separate worksheet Sorting works anywhere on the Pivot table Add Pivot Table Toolbar under View > Toolbars Features will enable when you click inside a Pivot Table Wizard immediately available Predefined formats available Pivot Charts: Click on the Chart Wizard for Pivotable Charts They are interactive too!
16 Cautions Review the data - KNOW YOUR DATA! Just because it looks easy Tools and techniques don t prevent errors, mistakes, or omissions Be extra careful with attributions. Procedures, OFIs, Mortality Additional fields added to rows and columns can be bewildering - remember <ctrl>z to undo. Adding a field that varies widely to a column can outstrip Excel (255 Columns). Summarize first in a column and then move to a row. Multiple Pivot Tables built in one workbook rapidly expand the file size. Bigger files mean more storage and slower performance. Be patient with your PC. If you succeed, you might become very popular!

Includes Focus Physicians and Specialties and Locations Includes Category Assigments by Measure Includes Arrival Dates and Times and study-specific measures dates and times (AMI has PCI, SCIP has Surgery Start and End) If Focus Physician 1 is entered as case anesthesiologist Time to ATB can be summarized and attibuted. Each measure is output with category assignment. OFIs and In Numerator Population cases can be summarized by physician
