1 Using the Landscape Project through NJDEP Landscape 3.3 Viewer Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox are recommended for the use of this app. Navigate to the NJDEP-DFW s Landscape Project web page at Click Access Landscape Project GIS layers on NJDEP's interactive mapping application site. 1. NJDEP Landscape 3.3 Viewer Interface Users of NJ-GeoWeb will notice a new look with numerous interface differences. The interface presented to the user consists of a Map View Frame, a Map Tools toolbar, the Attributes Table, the Zoom icons, and Share and App Information icons. By default, all tools are closed upon application launch. Many of the tools launch windows that can be moved and placed anywhere on the application window. NJDEP Landscape 3.3 Viewer Functionality At the top left corner of the screen there is a bar for Search.

2 Map Tools and Functions The toolbars at the top left and bottom of the screen provide most of the basic functions of the application. White icons represent Viewing Tools and Black icons represent Map Tools. Many tools produce a window that can be moved by clicking and dragging. Tools can be used to find an area of interest in the Map View by zooming in or out to different scales, and by panning around the map by clicking and dragging. Default extent sets the map back to its original positioning and previous/next extent take the map to the previous or next extent viewed. Information about the layers is provided when features or layers are clicked on. Comparative viewing of layers can be done with the Swipe tool that splits the map vertically to analyze the differences between the layers. A specific map position and scale can be saved using the Bookmark icon. The Share icon generates links and embedding codes so the map can be saved, ed, or embedded on a webpage. The Basemap Gallery icon shows a variety of maps that can be used under the layers. The About icon gives information about the regions and habitats layers. Finally, the Show Map Overview icon can show where the Map View is located on a larger scale map of the east coast. A summary of each tool is provided in Table 1. Table 1. 3 Table 2. A closer look at some Map Tools Measurement Tool Used to measure area, distance, and longitude and latitude. This tool allows the user to create custom polygons, lines, and points that will provide the user with the shapes s measurement. Area is used to create polygons and can be measured in acres, square miles, square kilometers, hectares, square yards, square feet, square feet (US), and square meters. Distance is used to create lines and can be measured in miles, kilometers, feet, feet (US), meters, yards, and nautical miles. Location is used to create points and can be measured in degrees or DMS. Select Tool Allows the user to select a portion of the layers. This highlights areas of the active layers, making them transparent. Next to the layer name in the Select Tool window, there is an ellipsis that genereates a dropdown menu. The user can zoom to the selected layers or pan to them. The flash option causes the selected layer components to blink. Statistics provides values, sums, minimums, maximums, and averages for certain information in the layer, like acres or shape area. The option to create a new layer out of the selected components is also available, as is the ability to add a marker to the map. The user can also open the attribute table to view information about only the selected components. Swipe Tool After selecting a layer, the swipe tool allows users to view the map with the selected layer active only on one side of a line that cuts vertically through the map. The user can change the amount of map showing the selected layer by clicking and dragging the blue button with a double ended arrow that is in the center of the line. This feature can be used while mulitple layers are active and any of those layers can be chosen to use in Swipe Tool. Draw Tool This tool provides the user with the means to create graphics and text to add to the map. All features have a multitude of options for customization. There are a wide variety of symbols that can be used for points, as well as custom color, outline color, transparency, symbol size, and outline width. Lines, polylines, and freehand polylines have custom color options, dotted, dashed, or solid line options, trasparency and width choices, and the option to show measurements in various units. Triangles, extents, circles, ellipses, polygons, and freehand polygons provide options for color, outline color, outline width, transparency, and measurements in a variety of area and distance units. Points, all lines, and all polygons have preset samples for use as well. Text is customizable as well as the font color and font size.

4 Map Content Layer list enables the turning on and off of mapped layers, and is a floating control that can be moved to any location on the display, minimized, or closed. Layers are turned on by clicking the checkbox next to the layer name. Layer names that appear greyed out can be viewed by zooming in further on the map. Layer List Features Clicking the ellipsis symbol will generate a drop down menu for each layer. The drop down menu consists of options to zoom to the layer, make it more or less transparent, disable pop-ups when clicking, change the order of the layer on the list, open the attribute table for that specific layer, or see more information about the layer.

5 Basemap Gallery gives the user eleven options for their map view. These basemaps are visible under the active layers. Basemap options include dark grey canvas, light grey canvas, imagery with labels, National Geographic, oceans, Open Street Map, streets, terrain with labels, topographic, USA Topo maps, and USGS National map. These maps all vary based on appearance and information provided. Some basemaps focus heavily on land topography and natural features, some display streets and parcels, and others give only labels as information. Figures 3 & 4. Basemap Gallery and About About takes the user to links where they provide feedback through Microsoft Outlook or by copying the address provided. Users can also read the metadata for each landscape region as well as vernal pools, vernal habitats, and stream habitats. This data provides users with information about the layers not provided by the map such as abstracts, purposes, and more and contains identification information, data quality information, spatial data organization information, spatial reference information, entity and attribute information, distribution information, and metadata reference information.

6 2. Searches There is a search bar located at the top left side of the screen. When used, the search engine places a point on the map to the location that was searched. A window will also be generated with options to zoom to layer, pan to layer, and add a location marker. Figure 5. Search bar 3. Tutorial: Landscape Project The following tutorial walks users through most of the basic functionality of the NJDEP Landscape Project 3.3 Viewer. There are additional tools and functionality that have not been included in this tutorial. Feel free to deviate from the tutorial to explore on your own. NJDEP Landscape Project 3.3 Viewer 1. Launch NJDEP Landscape Project 3.3 Viewer. 2. Click inside the search bar. Search for an address you know exists in NJ. Click on the search button or press enter. If found, the map will temporarily plot a symbol at that address. Click the ellipsis at the bottom right of the search result window and click add location marker to create a marker that will stay on the map. Ex: 401 E. State Street, Trenton, NJ, USA. 3. Open Layer List and activate any Landscape Project layers of interest to you by clicking the box to the left of the layer name. Zoom in or out if desired. 4. Open the Legend Tool to open the legend window. Notice which colors represent which layers and how the colors correspond to the Landscape Rank. Close the legend. 5. Click an area of the map with a Landscape Rank. A pop up will appear with information about species and landscape rank. Click the arrows leading to species information and view species information.
