3 Patent Web System (Read Only) The Patent Web Read-Only System is designed to give your clients, divisions, and/or attorneys access to their patent data online. It gives them the flexibility to run various reports online and link to The Patent Office and Intellectual Property websites. Menu Navigation The navigation bar on the left side of the screen provides menu and sub-menu selections that are accessible to all users. Search allows users to search and view patent or action records. Reports allows users to generate the Due Date List, Patent List and Patent Status reports online. Other Data allows users to view contact information for Agents, Attorneys, Divisions and Assignees. Links contains links to various patent and patent office websites including the USPTO and EPO. Help contains help topics on different functionalities and screens of the system. LogOut closes the system and opens the login screen. Exit closes the system and the browser. 4 Searching General Search Techniques Searching is an effective way to pull records from the Patent web system without running a report. You can search on Invention, Application, or Action records. Clicking on Hyperlink fields opens a pick-list window Submit initiates the search using the entered Clears all criteria fields Hyperlink Field Pick List You can enter your criteria in the search fields or you can select from the pick-list of any hyperlinked fields. Hyperlinked fields are shown in red with a lens beside them (such as ). Clicking on any of these fields opens a pick-list window where you can select data to fill in the search field. 2 Patent Web Read Only Module (R4)
5 Wild Cards The two wild card characters for searching are the asterisk (*) and question mark(?). The asterisk represents an unknown number of characters in a field. For example, if a user specifies a search criteria of "235*" in the Case Number field, this will filter out the records that begin with the string of values "235. The asterisk wild card (*) can be used in both text and numeric fields. Note that the asterisk is specific to its placement in the search string. A search on "235*" will pull the "235" at the beginning of a field, while the asterisk placed at the beginning of a search string, as in "*235" will pull the set of values at the end of a field. Placing the asterisk on either side of an expression *235* will pull that set of characters if it exists anywhere in the field. The question mark (?) is a wild card character that can be used to denote one unknown character in a search expression. Patent Web Read-Only Module (R4) 3
6 Searching Using Multiple Criteria It is possible to search on multiple fields in any of the Search screens. For example, to perform a search for patents filed in Australia between January 1,1996 and June 1, 1996, the user would select Country Code AU and limit the filing date using the values 1-Jan-1996 and 1-Jun-1996 on the Patent Search Screen. If the 'from date' is filled and the 'to date is left blank, the search will return all cases from the from date until the present. Searching without entering any criterion will pull all the records. 4 Patent Web Read Only Module (R4)
7 Invention Search To search for invention records, click on Search Inventions to open the Invention Data Search screen. After entering criteria in the search fields, click will bring you to the Patent Data Search Results screen. to initiate the search. 8 The search may result in several pages of records. Use the buttons to move between pages of records. The button goes to the first page, goes to the last page, while the button goes to the previous page and the button goes to the next page. The icon indicates that images are attached to the record. Invention Record Detail To view the details of a particular patent record, click on the hyperlink for Patent Name. This will open the Invention Record Detail screen showing the details of the selected Patent record. The details that may be viewed include disclosure data, inventors, and any applications filed under that invention s docket number. Click the button to print the screen. 9 Application Search To search for application records, click on Search Applications to open the Application Data Search screen. Patent Web Read-Only Module (R4) 7
10 After entering criteria in the search fields, click to initiate the search. This will bring you to the Country Application Data Search Results screen. 11 This will open the Country Application Record Detail screen showing the details of the selected application record. The details that may be viewed include bibliographic data, actions, images and any web links entered under that application s docket number. Click the button to print the screen. Actions Upon viewing a country application record, any associated actions display. To view further details about any due item, click the action due hyperlink. 12 Upon clicking the action due hyperlink, the Actions Due Record Detail screen displays. To return to the application, click the Back to Application Record Detail hyperlink. Web Links At the bottom of most patent records, the system displays Web Links. These are patent web sites specific to the country of the application. Some website links require specification of certain bibliographic dates and numbers. Thus, applicability of a link is dependent upon information (dates, numbers, country) entered in the application record. To access a particular web site, click the web link description. The USPTO Patent Assignment Database Search link above will open the corresponding web site below. 10 Patent Web Read Only Module (R4)
13 Action Search To search for action due date records, click on Search Actions to open the Action Data Search screen. Once you have entered the criteria, click on the button to show the results. The search may result in several pages of records. Use the buttons to move between pages of records. The button goes to the first page, goes to the last page, while the button goes to the previous page and the button goes to the next page in the sequence. The Due Date hyperlink will show the details of a specific action while the Title hyperlink will open the related Patent record. Patent Web Read-Only Module (R4) 11
14 The Actions Due Record Detail shows all the information about the action. Clicking the country application hyperlink accesses the related invention record. Clicking the title hyperlink accesses the related patent record. Click on the button to print the screen. 12 Patent Web Read Only Module (R4)
15 Reports There are three reports in the Patent web system: the Due Date List, the Master List, and the Patent Status report. Although these reports are predefined, they are very flexible in terms of how general or specific you want the selection criteria to be. Wild Card characters (* and?) may be used when specifying criteria. When running reports, some fields have two pick lists. The first pick list contains an option of NOT to exclude a value; the second pick list contains the values to be excluded or included. For example, in the Due Date List, it s possible to exclude reminders from the report. From the indicator field, select NOT for the first pick list and Reminder in the second pick list. In addition, several sorting options are provided to allow you to group the records according to your needs. On all reports, the system provides the option of selecting all cases, only active cases, or inactive cases. To run a report, select the desired report from the Reports menu, enter in the criteria (if any) and click on the button. To start anew and clear any existing criteria in the form, click the Clear button. Due Date List Report The Due Date List Report is designed to print the outstanding due dates, reminders, and final deadlines within a specified date range. The sorting options enable you to group the actions by date, division or attorney. The report format allows you to adjust the amount of information in the report. You may also specify whether to print remarks, inventors or past due reminders. Patent Web Read-Only Module (R4) 13
16 Due Date List By Date In any report, you can move from one page to another by clicking on the buttons. Click on to output the report to the printer. The due date is hyperlinked and will take you to the corresponding action record. The patent name is also hyperlinked and will take you to the corresponding patent record. 18 Master List Report The Master List Report is designed to print an entire patent portfolio. It will display the information for all countries where a given patent is filed. You are given flexibility on how records are sorted and grouped in the report. The report format allows you to adjust the amount of information in the report. Moreover, you may specify whether to print abstract, remarks, inventors, priority information as well as keywords. 16 Patent Web Read Only Module (R4)
19 Master List By Docket Number The country code is a link that accesses the application record. The title links to the invention record. Master List by Division Patent Web Read-Only Module (R4) 17
20 Patent Status Report The Patent Status Report is designed to print your patent portfolio. This portfolio may also include upcoming actions. The report will not include reminders or past due dates. It can be printed by patent name, division or client code. You have the option to print the next action (earliest upcoming due date) or all outstanding actions. Also, you can choose to print the remarks and/or the goods on the report. 18 Patent Web Read Only Module (R4)
21 Patent Status by Division Code There are several hyperlinks in this report. The patent title hyperlinks to the corresponding invention record. 22 Auxiliary Tables The auxiliary tables can be opened from the Other Data menu. Each table holds information about different entities: agents, attorneys, clients or owners. To search for a record, you can select from the Code pick list or from the Name pick list. After selecting, the details about the entity record will be shown on the screen. You can click on the button to print the record. Shown above is the Agent Table. The Attorney, Client and Owner screen have similar layouts to the above. 20 Patent Web Read Only Module (R4)
23 Links to Web Sites The Links section contains links to the main pages of various patent and patent office sites, including the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the World Intellectual Property Office, the European Patent Office and the Computer Packages website. To open the site, simply click on the desired logo or name. Help For ease of use, the system provides context-sensitive help. This means that if you need help on a particular screen, simply click on the Help button on the navigation menu, and the proper help window will pop up on the screen. For example, if you click on Help while in any one of the auxiliary screens, the help screen below will pop up. Patent Web Read-Only Module (R4) 21
