10 Link Descriptions Life is too short to click on an unknown. Jakob Neilsen Why it is important? Poor link descriptions: distracts the user from the task they are trying to complete wastes users time hides important information from your audience Good links Help user understand what will happen when they click on link Helps user find the additional information they need or interested in

11 Link Descriptions Content Audit 2018: Generic link text such as click here is used, which does not accurately describe where the link takes you to.. Full URLs being used, rather than embedding the link in descriptive. This can look messy and relies on the URL to describe the destination, which may not clear

13 Link Descriptions If I click on a link or button that says Hot mashed potatoes, the site will take me to a page named Hot mashed potatoes. Steve Krug Suggestions for Improvement: Do: Don t Make link description obvious to user (launch and land on same name) Place important words at the front of link Start link with a verb and call to action e.g. Request, Apply, Register, Complete Try to group links together in an single area Use URls e.g. Use generic link descriptions like Click here, Learn more or Read more Use similar link descriptions

14 Changing Link descriptions Start with the link, not the sentence. The link should be the first thing you think about. You should only add surrounding text if absolutely necessary.
