1 Nexis Media Coverage Analyzer User Guide Analyze search results by using charts and graphs on a dedicated dashboard Nexis Media Coverage Analyzer is a new add-on module for nexis.com with a dedicated dashboard that facilitates the identification of coincidents, relationships, and histories of mass datasets. It helps you: Gain deeper insights Find better intelligence Stimulate new ideas through visualized analyses of critical content Create presentation-ready graphs for use in internal presentations, portals, and websites
2 Nexis Media Coverage Analyzer Nexis Media Coverage Analyzer offers a new post-search option that lets you export search results to an integrated analytics dashboard. It pulls citation information and metadata for all retrieved documents, allowing various types of analysis. You can select a single variable or multiple variables search terms, index terms, time periods to generate unique analyses. Here s how: Search and analyze Perform your nexis.com search using terms important to your analysis. 2
3 Evaluate your results and refine as desired. Once you re satisfied with your results, click the Next Steps pull-down menu, select Analyze Results, and click Go. The data for your results gets imported into the Media Coverage Analyzer dashboard. Your analysis may take a several minutes. When it s complete, you ll see the Analysis screen. The default display shows the total articles as a single line on your analysis. You can customize your chart in several ways. 3
4 Customize your analysis Here are some of the things you can do to customize your analysis: Name your chart Add a title to your chart by clicking the icon on the Title line. Enter your title, select font size, and click OK. Modify the Y-axis Choose what you wish to measure in your analysis by using the first pull-down list under the heading. Document count is the default. You can use the pull-down list to select word count. Depending on the source(s) you selected for your search, you may see other options. Change the Y-axis label by entering your choice of words in the Label y-axis field. Change the Y-axis value by using the Value y-axis pull-down list. Total (the number of articles or the number of words plus the circulation figure) is the default, but you can choose Average instead. To save your changes, click OK. Modify the X-axis Choose the unit for your timeline by using the Value x-axis pull-down list month is the default, but you can also select year, week, day, or weekday. You can also choose publications, publication type, or language. If you select Publications, the Show extra options link will appear. Click the link to eliminate publications with fewer than a specified number of articles from your analysis or to modify sort type and sort order. To save your changes, click OK. 4
5 Add variables By default, all articles you ve selected previously will display as a single line, bar, or circle in your chart. You can break this down into subselections by adding one or more variables. Each one will appear as a line, bar, or circle. Search words as variables To analyze based on some of your search words: 1 Click the Add subselection link under the Select analysis heading. Options for subselections will appear. 2 Name your subselection. In the legend, this will be the meaning of the line, bar, or circle associated with that subselection. 3 Select a color for the line, bar, or circle in your chart. 4 Click on the Search Words link. The Search Words box will appear. You ll see the terms you used in your search. 5 Choose one or more terms that you want to associate with the color you selected in the previous section and close the Search Words box. (If you don t see the term(s) you want on the first page within the box, either click to go to another page or enter your term in the search box and click Search.) 6 To save your changes, click OK. Repeat the steps listed above to select other terms, if you choose. 5
6 Once you ve finished with pertinent search terms, your results might look something like this: If you want to sort your subselections, use the green up and down arrows. To remove a subselection, click the red X next to it. 6
7 Publications as variables To analyze based on some of the publications represented in your search results: 1 Click the Add subselection link under the Select analysis heading. Options for subselections will appear. 2 Name your subselection. In the legend, this will be the meaning of the line, bar, or circle associated with that subselection. 3 Select a color for the line, bar, or circle in your chart. 4 Click on the Publications link. The Publications box will appear. You ll see the name of every publication represented in your search results. 5 Choose one or more publications that you want to associate with the color you selected in the previous section and close the Publications box. (If you don t see the publication(s) you want on the first page within the box, either click to go to another page or enter the title in the search box and click Search.) 6 To save your changes, click OK. Repeat to select other publications, if you choose. Once you ve finished with pertinent publications, your results might look something like the screen on page 6, with publication names instead of search words. If you want to sort your subselections, use the green up and down arrows. To remove a subselection, click the red X next to it. Other variables Depending on your source selection and your search terms, you may also be able to use publication type, language, or LexisNexis SmartIndexing Technology terms (subject or geographical) as variables. The process is similar to those described in the two sections above. 7
8 Modify chart type and layout You can edit chart settings to suit your needs: Click the button to crop a section from your chart to create a new one. Click and drag your cursor to select the area you wish to use for your new chart. Then click the button to create the new chart. Click the button to undo your change. Click the button to select chart type line, bar, pie, etc. Click the button to rotate the orientation of your chart. Click the button to modify your chart legend s location and form. View articles via your chart To view underlying articles for any of your subselections, just click the corresponding point, bar, or pie wedge. You ll get a list of the articles. Just click the title to go to the full text. The article will open in a new window. 8
9 Save your analysis You can save your analysis, save your search, or save both. Just click the appropriate button in the bottom-right section of the screen. You ll be taken through the simple steps for whichever option you choose. When you choose Save analysis and search, you ll move to the Save search screen. Name your search and schedule an automatic search update schedule weekly, daily, or hourly or keep the default, which is to update manually whenever you choose. Then click Save. You ll go to the Save analysis screen. Name your analysis, choose to make the analysis available to others (the default is no), and choose to add password protection. You can also schedule automatic chart refreshes on a daily or weekly basis (the default is not to refresh automatically). After making all of your selections, click Save. You ll see the Saved Analysis screen. From there, you can view the details of your analysis, edit it, or delete it. You can also create new folders and move your analysis to a different folder. If you want to edit the analysis in the future to include new content, select the option to make your search query a feed in Nexis Media Coverage Analyzer. This allows you to keep the analysis up to date. When you have multiple saved analyses, you can sort them by name, chart title, date, type, etc., by clicking on the appropriate column heading. 9
10 Open saved analysis To open and edit saved charts and analyses, click the Saved Analysis subtab. You can create new charts and organize your charts into individual work folders for example, you can save regularly used analyses to a Favorites folder. To work with a saved analysis, click the chart name link or select an option button. Click Details to move to your chart or table to gain access to the refreshing and sharing options, where you can: Manually refresh the analysis with new documents. Publish the analysis when you select publishing options, you generate a unique URL that you can save and share (password optional). Note that access to the full-text documents from this URL is suppressed. the analysis and set the options to the charts after automatic refresh. Change your update options. Click Edit to go back to the New Analysis screen to modify your analysis. Export your articles to a spreadsheet.
