1 Asking for time off? That has to be quick and efficient. The project With the HR software Anton small and medium-sized businesses save time and reduce paperwork. With the technical decision to switch from Silverlight to HTML5 the time was right to take a close look at the usability of Anton. With our UX review we provided Anton with advice and tips based on solid usability principles and our own UX Design methodology. Thanks to our practical recommendations the new HTML5 application will get a real usability boost! anton.be Human Interface Group 1

2 The challenge We had to make choices due to the short time span of the project and the elaborate functionalities of the software. Therefore, we turned our attention to module structure, navigation and screen design. Additionally, we worked on one module: monitoring absences. We focused on the importance of using elements (e.g. calendar, icons etc.) that are easily recognizable and the preconception users typically have when they start using a new web application. Furthermore, we couldn t waste time zooming in on details but needed to spot the crucial problems right away. We tried to make our advices generally applicable, as they needed to be used for other modules as well. In this way, our deliverables are relevant for the whole application, not only for the module for monitoring absences. anton.be From existing design theories, user experience research and our own project experience we selected fundamental usability principles that clarify how people think, feel, see and interact. 3 The results In the future, customers of Anton will get a user-friendly and forward-looking application, thanks to our advices. For Anton we selected the following usability principles: The 3 selected usability principles for the UX review of Anton. We identified the crucial building blocks of the web application: data grid, form and calendar. These building blocks helped us to not lose ourselves in details and allowed us to work on practical solutions and to define specific points of action. We listed the typical elements that make a building block recognizable (e.g. the lay-out of a Human Interface Group 3

4 form, the interaction inside a data grid and browsing in a calendar), and we compared them with the elements that were already available in Anton. The result is a list of UX points of action that the team of Anton can start working with. 5 Human Interface Group gave us the opportunity to compare our ideas and remarks with UX best practices. They offered new insights on how to approach the conversion to new technologies on UX side. That was a crucial step to involve end users and non-technical colleagues into the execution of the project.
