Widgets are a great way to get your constituents more involved in your online campaigns by allowing them to create direct links to your online donation forms and online advocacy action alerts. But how does it work? Convio Widgets have several elements. The first step is for an Administrator to place a widget banner or a widget progress meter on their website. Any site visitor can grab a snippet of HTML code to then publish that banner or progress meter on their own personal website, or publish it to any location where they can post html code. When your constituents post this banner or progress meter in their own locations, there will be a link which points back to your online campaign. This way, when visitors to their content see this banner/progress meter, there will be a link right back to your organization s website where the actions are tracked back to the constituent who generated that traffic. An important thing to keep in mind as you decide whether or not using widgets is right for your organization will be the consideration of whether or not your constituents will feel comfortable taking small snippets of HTML code to be published somewhere else. Personal sites are becoming more popular with the growing presence of web logs or blogs, and online social networks such as the very popular MySpace community; however, if you do not feel that your constituents would want to publish these HTML snippets in their own locations, it might not be the right time for you to take advantage of Convio widgets. 2

3 Product Coverage Product Banners Progress Meters Donations Yes # Gifts $s Raised TeamRaiser Yes # Registered Advocacy Yes # Responses Widgets will only allow Administrators to create banner components and progress meters for certain types of online campaigns. Both banner components and progress meters can be used for Convio s donation modules, Advocacy campaigns and also for tracking the number of registrants for a TeamRaiser event. 3

4 Creating Widgets Campaigns There are a few steps involved to begin using Widget campaigns. The first step will be to navigate to the new Constituent 360 menu option called Widgets. Click the link at the top to Create a New Widgets Campaign. 4

5 On the first step for creating a Widgets Campaign, there are two required fields: the Name and the Description. The fourth step is important because it determines what type of campaign this Widgets Campaign will be. There are four options to choose from: Donation Campaign: Dollars Donation Campaign: Donations Advocacy Alert responses TeamRaiser: Registrations 5

6 On the next step, you ll choose which donation campaign, TeamRaiser event or advocacy action alert this Widgets campaign is associated with. The goal that is set on this screen will be the goal that the whole campaign is looking to achieve. When you have finished creating your new Widgets campaign, you will now see it in the Widgets campaign list. You can click on the Edit link to make any changes to the initial setup, or you can click the Manage link to begin creating new banner components and new progress meter components. 6

7 Exercise: Create a New Widgets Campaign Navigate to: C360 > Widgets > Create a New Widgets Campaign Give it a name and then choose what type of campaign it will be (We suggest Donations-dollars as a good first timer s campaign to create) then click Next Next, select the Donation form that you will associate this widget with (the donation form that you select will be the form that they get sent to when somebody clicks this widget to donate). Click Finish when you re done. Notice that the new campaign you have created is in the Widgets campaign list. In the next exercise we ll click Manage next to your new widgets campaign. Creating New Banner Components and New Progress Meter Components When you click Manage you will see that there are no components created by default. You will need to use the links at the top of this page to begin creating new components that will be used for this Widgets campaign. 7

8 Creating New Banner Components When you embed a Banner Component on your Convio powered site, users will be able to sign up to participate in this Widgets campaign, and then embed a banner link in their own HTML content which points people back to your donation form (or advocacy campaign or TeamRaiser event). When you ve clicked to Create a New Banner Component there will be two steps to complete. On the first step, you ll need to give a unique name to this banner component. The Constituent Goal will be the default goal that users have as their own goal when they embed this banner link in their own HTML content. 8

9 On the second step, you ll need to select an image to be used in this banner component. The image that you select here will be the image that your constituents embed into their own HTML content to begin driving friends and family back to your organization s web site. 9

10 Creating New Progress Meter Components When you embed a Progress Meter on your Convio powered site, users will be able to sign up to participate in this Widgets campaign, and then embed a progress meter link in their own HTML content which points people back to your donation form (or advocacy campaign or TeamRaiser event). When you ve clicked to Create a New Progress Meter Component there will be two steps to complete. On the first step, you ll need to give a unique name to this progress meter component. The Constituent Goal will be the default goal that users have as their own goal when they embed this banner link in their own HTML content. 10

11 On the second step, you ll need to choose the colors to be used in your progress meter component. The colors that you select here will change the progress meter that your constituents embed into their own HTML content to begin driving friends and family back to your organization s web site. 11

12 When you have clicked Finish you should now see the list of Widgets Components that are available for your Widgets campaign! Once you ve created these components, you can immediately begin to use them by actively creating links to them in any of your Convio content (ex: from PageBuilder pages). 12

13 Exercise: Create a New Banner Component C360 > Widgets > Manage (next to Widgets Campaign from previous exercise) Click Create a New Banner Component Give it a name and a description. Set the initial constituent goal. The constituent goal will appear as the amount that the individual is trying to raise for your organization. Click Next Either choose an image from the Image Library or upload a new image to be used as the image that constituents will be embedding on their personal sites as they try to create traffic to your organization s site. Once you have chosen the image to be used as the banner, click Finish You should now see your new Banner Component in the Widgets Components list. Exercise: Create a New Progress Meter Component C360 > Widgets > Manage (next to Widgets Campaign from previous exercise) Click Create a New Progress Meter Component Give it a name and a description. Set the initial constituent goal. The constituent goal will appear as the amount that the individual is trying to raise for your organization. Click Next Make sure that the check box on step one is left unchecked. Use the color selectors to choose the colors for each different part of the progress meter. Once you have chosen the colors that you would like to be used for this progress meter, click Finish You should now see your new Progress Meter Component in the Widgets Components list. 13

14 Embedding Widgets Components in PageBuilder Embedding a Widgets component in your Convio content is easy using the Convio WYSIWYG. When you are ready to embed your component, choose the Components drop down and find the Widgets Component selection. When you choose this option, a pop up selector will display the different Widgets campaigns you have created. Select the Widgets campaign that has the component you wish to embed. Click Insert next to the campaign. 14

15 Once you have chosen the Widgets campaign you wish to use, you will be presented with a choice of the various components that you ve created for use in this campaign. Click the radio button next to the component that you wish to embed in your page. Choose the Banner Component or Progress Meter Component that you would like to embed in this page 15

16 You will now see your Widgets component appear in the page you ve created. All logged in users will be able to immediately use the Widgets component. Any site visitors who are not yet registered will be asked to provide their name and address before they can click to Get Snippet. 16

17 Once a registered user clicks to Get Snippet, they will be presented with the HTML source code that they can embed in their own HTML content to display the banner component or progress meter which links their visitors back to your organization s site. 17

18 TeamRaiser Widget You can also get your constituents to promote your TeamRaiser event on their own web pages using a TeamRaiser Widget. A Widget is an image with an embedded link that you provide to your constituents to post on their own web pages to help advertise your event. This image will track the constituent s progress as well as provide a link back to your organization s website to either register for a TeamRaiser or make a donation on behalf of the constituent. The process for setting up Widgets is as follows: 1. Create a Widgets campaign for your event. Determine whether you want the Widget to track TeamRaiser Registrations or Personal Dollars. 18

19 2. Associate the Widgets campaign to your TeamRaiser event. 3. Create a page within your TeamRaiser event for your constituents to sign up for the Widget. 19

20 Widgets Reports To track the progress of your constituents activities with widgets, there is a Widgets reports tab that contains the Widgets report. This report will help administrators see the level of success that each constituent is having as they begin using the banner components and progress meters made available through the widgets campaigns. If you click to View the report, you will see an on screen display showing each respondent to your Widgets campaigns including the results of their efforts. 20

21 Widgets Best Practices For a Convio widgets campaign to be successful there will undoubtedly be many things for administrators to consider. Don t forget that your constituents who will be employing widgets components on their personal sites will need to have a basic understanding of how HTML code works. The marketing and outreach plan will need to be considered to begin driving constituents to use these widget components, and as always, the results of using these tools will vary greatly depending on many factors for your organization (such as the size of your housefile and the demographics of your housefile). Be clear that widget propagation requires having end users who are HTML savvy o Widget pusher must be able to publish HTML on a website or can have an HTML signature o Widget viewer clicks to take action Emphasize the marketing plan o Get core adoption, show success, provide coaching Why not enlist a volunteer geek squad to help others? o Think about your audience Housefile size Demographics Sustained outreach on networking sites, blogs, RSS, etc. 21
