7 Role of Data Standards We need data standards to allow: 1. Simple data exchange - passing files between two computer systems or software packages 2. Storing files on the World Wide Web making the web an international repository for geotechnical information, available to the whole geoengineering community Task 2 needs the data format to be geo-spatially aware hence the data format needs to be developed as a GML application But do we need this level of complexity for Task 1?

11 DIGGS Lite Requirements Is easy to import into a spreadsheet This means it needs: a single schema file A stylesheet file that can create a simple tabular format a single namespace (may not be essential but does simplify things)

15 Conclusions It is necessary for geo-engineering data to be stored on the World Wide Web in a structured and standardised form in order to provide a useful repository of data. The way to achieve this is by adopting XML (extensible Markup Language) and developing internationally agreed data standards for geo-engineering Developing a data standard that can contribute to geo-spatial web portals requires the data standard to be geo-spatially aware which means developing it as a GML application (GeoSciML?) This requires a level of complication that may not be necessary for simple data transfer between two computer systems or software packages It may therefore be sensible to have two varieties of data standard: i. the full version, based on GML, for geo-spatial web-based sharing ii. a lite version, with the complexities stripped out, for simple data exchange Translators can be developed (in XSLT) that can easily convert between the two varieties
