What is W3C?
What is W3C? The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) was founded in October, 1994 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with support from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the European Commission. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is the main international standards organization for the World Wide Web. It is arranged as a consortium where member organizations (~480 members) maintain full-time staff for the purpose of working together in the development of standards for the web. There are currently more than 50 Working Groups in W3C and their activities are organized into 7 domains : 1. Web Design and Applications: involving the standards for building and Rendering Web pages, including HTML, CSS, SVG, Ajax, and other technologies for Web Applications ( WebApps ). This domain also includes accessibility (WCAG), internationalization and mobile web. 2. Web Architecture: focusing on the foundation technologies and principles which sustain the Web, including URIs and HTTP. 3. Semantic Web: enabling to create data stores on the Web, build vocabularies, and write rules for handling data. Linked data are empowered by technologies such as RDF, SPARQL, OWL, and SKOS. 4. XML Technology: XML Technologies including XML, XML Namespaces, XML Schema, XSLT, Efficient XML Interchange (EXI), and other related standards. 5. Web of Services: referring to message-based design frequently found on the Web and in enterprise software; It is based on technologies such as HTTP, XML, SOAP, WSDL, SPARQL, and others. 6. Web of Devices: W3C is focusing on technologies to enable Web access anywhere, anytime, using any device. This includes Web access from mobile phones and other mobile devices as well as use of Web technology in consumer electronics, printers, interactive television, and even automobiles. 7. Browsers and Authoring Tools: Focusing on development of browsers, media players, authoring tools, In addition to the working groups, there are interest groups, community groups and business groups, open to all members to initiate activities on specific domains that are not yet covered by a working group but are of interest. 8 Web of Things Interest Group overview
Internet of Things Context Internet of Things (IoT) is a broad term referring to the next generation of Internet which not only connects devices but also enables objects or machines to connect to each other, exchange information and perform actions without human intervention. IoT represents a huge business potential with the large variety of application domains (healthcare, home automation, ), of devices (Wearables, Smart Meters, ), of solutions (proprietary, users own, ) and of data (to collect, store, publish, protect, ). but there are lots to do as most of the current work has been done from the perspective of devices and transport protocols while most of the money will come from services. Subsequently, all the current developments are in product silos which do not help 3 rd parties to add value and hence reduce the potential. Standards can be key success factors to break out of product silos and create market opportunities by focusing more on services and building a new ecosystemincluding3 rd partiesanddevelopers. Orange ETSI M2M Workshop /12/2014 9
Web standards for services Web technologies and standards are expected to be very important and could be used as : JavaScript and open standards for data formats, interface definitions, security, privacy, federated services,... HTML for providing a common language of the weband of the internetof things. and this is the target for the Web of Things, a set of standards at the app/service layer above the IoT. The complementarity is then obvious between Internet of Things, providing sensors, actuators and protocols and Web of Things focusing on application and service layer where the business opportunities are present with an ecosystem at a web scale and without the silos constraints. The Web of Things A large variety of application domains Source: Orange ETSI M2M Workshop /12/
Web of Things Interest Group [1/2] The Objectives The mission of the W3C Web of Things Interest Group is to accelerate the development of open markets of applications and services based upon the role of Web technologies for a combination of the Internet of Things (IoT) with the Web of data. The Web of Things Interest Group aims to identify opportunities for standards which will enable applications and services to break out of product silos. By focusing on Web technologies for the application and service layer that overlays the IoT devices and technologies, the WoT IG work will complement other standards and organizations focusing more on the Internet of Things. The WoT IG is intended to include device manufacturers, designers and developers, equipment manufacturers, tool and platform vendors, operators and other relevant participants in the value chain that creates and operates such products and services. The Scope The first step for the Interest Group will be to collect and publish Web of Things use cases from the different sectors/domains and to identify common elementary use cases and requirements. This is essential for ensuring a shared understanding and will be a prerequisite for splitting work up into task forces which can proceed in parallel and focus on identifying existing practices, standards and requirements for services (Data modeling, identification, Discovery, Provisioning, Registration, Service descriptions and dependencies, Monetization, security, privacy, accessibility, ) It is expected that the WoT Interest Group will choose several important application sectors/domains to focus on in order to ensure that its proposed architecture has real applicability. Source: Orange ETSI M2M Workshop /12/
Web of Things Interest Group [2/2] The Deliverables The Timeline The primary deliverables of the Web of Things Interest Group are IG notes identifying requirements for existing and/or new technical specifications, that would advance the group's mission. In addition, the group will review and comment on documents generated by the other W3C groups and possibly from external organizations. It is important to note that the technical development of standards is not in the scope of W3C Interest Groups ; Instead the Interest Groups recommend work items for other existing or to be created working groups. 13 Conclusion
Next Steps The real business opportunities and full potential of the Internet of Things reside in the services. Web Standards and Technologies are a key success factors. The Web of Things will depend on participation from people representing various stakeholder communities, including developers, equipment manufacturers, browser vendors, operators and users, contributing together on development of work items production of relevant documents. The next steps for the WoT IG is to collaborate on gathering use cases, requirements, identifying gaps, best practices, and proposing work items for standardization in W3C Working Groups. More Information about the group is available from the public home page ( or contact Dave Raggett, W3C (dsr@w3.org). Orange ETSI M2M Workshop /12/
