3 NLM has been indexing the biomedical literature since 1879 What was once a printed index to articles, the Index Medicus, became a database now known as MEDLINE MEDLINE contains journal citations and abstracts for biomedical literature from around the world Over 21 million citations Since 1996, free access to MEDLINE has been available to the public online via PubMed

4 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] Supplied electronically by publishers directly to PubMed Citations are forwarded to NLM s Index Section to be processed [PubMed in process] Being reviewed for inclusion in MEDLINE If in scope, indexed with MeSH vocabulary [PubMed indexed for MEDLINE] Completed, MeSH assigned and checked for bibliographic accuracy

5 [PubMed OLDMEDLINE] Not yet assigned current MeSH Since 2005, the original subject terms applied to the citations in the printed indexes are being mapped to current Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) [PubMed] If out of scope and will not be assigned MeSH Some books are cited by title and author in PubMed

6 Designed to get relevant articles quickly Search terms are matched against: Subjects, using the MeSH Translation Table Journals, using the Journals Translation Table Authors and Investigators When a match is found for a term or phrase in a translation table the mapping process is complete and does not continue on to the next translation table The matched term and searcher s term will also be searched in All Fields If a term is mapped to MeSH, it will also automatically be exploded and include narrower terms Example: mental health

7 What if no match is found for the phrase? PubMed breaks apart the phrase and repeats the automatic term mapping process until a match is found Terms that don t make a match will be searched in All Fields. Individual terms will be combined (ANDed) together PubMed breaks apart a phrase from right to left Example: mental health disorders

8 Limits allow you to set commonly used parameters for your query, which may result in more relevant retrieval Active limits appear above search results Example: mental health problems Limits: Review, Young Adult: years

9 History Search History will be lost after eight hours of inactivity The maximum number of searches held in History is 100 History displays the last five searches. When there are more than five, click the More History button to see the full display Combine searches using history Example: substance abuse AND mental health problems

10 The Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) Database allows you to: Locate and select appropriate MeSH terms See the definition and other helpful information for a MeSH term Display MeSH terms in the hierarchy Attach subheadings for a search and/or limit MeSH terms to a major concept for a search Build a PubMed search strategy

11 MEDLINE indexers examine articles and assign MeSH headings When there is no single specific MeSH heading for a concept, the indexer will use the closest, more general MeSH heading Indexers assign as many MeSH headings as appropriate to cover the topics of the article (generally 5 to 15) MeSH terms for major points of the article are marked with an * Information the indexer provides includes: topic of article age group of population studied human vs. animal studies male vs. female studies type of article (e.g., review article) Example: Depression/therapy and child
