Precision searching with STN Express Precise, comprehensive access to information on millions of chemical substances STN Express is a fully integrated software package designed to easily and efficiently search an unparalleled collection of essential science and technology databases online through STN. In additon to being a powerful user interface for command-line searching, STN Express is also a precision structure drawing tool. STN structure searching gives you a unique way to efficiently locate substances of interest. With structure queries, you can ask questions that are difficult or impossible to answer in other ways, such as a keyword search for a substance name that varies or is unknown. Using STN Express, a free software interface to STN, you can draw and upload the structure query. STN Express is equipped with advanced structure drawing tools, such as variable point of attachment, and a full complement of generic nodes that enable you to precisely represent your query. 6
CAS REGISTRY The world s largest substance database CAS REGISTRY, the global standard for chemical substance information, is the only integrated comprehensive source of chemical information from a full range of patent and journal literature that is created and quality controlled by scientists. CAS REGISTRY also provides ancillary information such as experimental and predicted property data, commercial availability, preparation details, spectra, and regulatory information from international sources. CAS, a part of the American Chemical Society, has for decades been the main source of abstracted literature material for chemists. In its assimilation process it had evolved into a database of virtually every single compound that has ever been detected, isolated, or synthesized. David Bradley, Chemical Databases Cover All Possibilities, Scientific Computing World Each substance entered into the CAS REGISTRY receives a unique identifier the CAS Registry Number that links the substance to references in the published scientific literature. Roles powerful CAS indexing terms that allow you to search for precise information on substances, e.g., Preparation. Property data added as they are discovered. 7
Patent searching Use CAS Registry Numbers to locate relevant scientific literature From CAS REGISTRY, you can transfer the CAS Registry Numbers for substances into the CAplus database, or other STN databases containing CAS Registry Numbers. Find additional, relevant prior art by searching Markush structures in the MARPAT database. Markush information is not covered by most patent sources, but it is critical to a comprehensive search for chemical prior art. Click Full-text to obtain the full text of most patents. Locate patent family information. 8
In MARPAT, the location of the structure in the patent is identified for easy full-text review. DWPI is a comprehensive value-added database of worldwide patents covering all areas of technology. Original titles and abstracts are rewritten to reveal the actual invention and to highlight the main uses and advantages of the technology. Also available are selected drawings and chemical structures. GRAPHIC INFORMATION: 9
Multifile searching with STN on the Web SM Search many databases simultaneously and save time and enhance comprehensiveness For critical business or research decisions, such as a patentability search, missing even one key document can be disastrous. With an unsurpassed collection of essential science and technology databases on one platform, STN provides a broad range of sources in one place, with tools to make multifile searching easy. In this example using STN on the Web, thesauri from multiple databases are used to explore and select relevant terminology. Use the robust query-building search operators to locate the most relevant documents when conducting a broad search in multiple files. Highly detailed thesauri in many databases provide specific keywords relevant to the search. The Controlled Terms can be used in the Index Terms field for greater precision, or as keywords in multiple fields for greater comprehensiveness. 10
offers a range of powerful boolean operators, allowing for very precise queries. A single search query produces accurate retrieval from multiple databases. 11
Analysis and visualization Support sound business decisions with the power of STN AnaVist TM STN AnaVist software works with STN Express or STN on the Web to apply sophisticated analytical and visualization capabilities to your answer sets. The powerful visualization tools allow you to view the relationships between 13 different fields within documents, e.g., companies, inventors, years, and concepts extracted from text. The Research Landscape shown below shows a 3-D cluster/contour map highlighting the research fronts identified in your results set. STN AnaVist allows interactive highlighting that can be dynamically reflected in all charts and the Research Landscape. This allows relationships between information to be quickly revealed. Each dot on the Research Landscape represents one document. The denser the peak, the more heavily the concept has been cited. The analysis in STN AnaVist is based on results from valueadd databases, i.e., CAplus and DWPI. This is the main difference from many other tools, which mainly work on first-level files. 12
Reports Maximize the value of STN information with high-quality tables and reports STN Express has many post-processing tools to help you professionally package your STN search results. Clean, clear formats can make a positive impact, maximizing the value that information provides to decision-makers. Custom and predefined reports STN provides the option to create fully customized reports by choosing fields, formats, fonts, and highlighting as desired; or to use predefined report and table templates for quick, easy, professional-looking reports. Variable Group Analysis Table When you need to report on a group of structurally related substances contained in a CAS REGISTRY answer set, use the R-group Analysis tool. Define the common structure of interest for the R-group analysis, then display the resulting table. Table Tool Create a table from selected fields, e.g., title or patent assignee, from STN answer sets, so you can quickly analyze search results. Custom reports in STN Express provide the option to include a linked summary of the answers at the top of the report to facilitate quick results review. STN has special table and report features, such as the variable group analysis table, to make efficient presentation of scientific and technical information and graphics easier. 13
For infrequent searchers STN Express provides a choice between searching with command language or using Discover! wizards If you are not familiar with the STN command language, you can still use the power of STN to retrieve information. STN Express Discover! wizards are available to guide you through many types of search queries. These step-by-step guides: Allow information professionals unfamiliar with STN to easily search the full range of STN databases Assist end users unfamiliar with online command-based searching, to perform effective searches with little or no training Show the command line searches in the background, providing some training on how to use command line search terminology in the future STN Discover! wizards are available for both search and display tasks.
