3 Searching on EBSCOhost

4 Search Options Search Modes Boolean/phrase Supports any Boolean searching or exact phrase searching, e.g. web accessibility. Stop words are ignored when part of phrases being searched. Find all my search terms (default) - combines search terms so that each search result contains all of the terms e.g. travel and Europe finds articles that contain both travel and Europe. Support exact phrase searching too. Find any of my search terms - combines search terms so that each search result contains at least one of the terms. For example, college or university finds results that contain either college or university. Smart-text searching Copy and paste chunks of text e.g. an abstract (up to 5000 characters including spaces) to search for results. SmartText Searching leverages a technology that summarises text entered to the most relevant search terms then conducts search.

5 Search Options - Expanding Searches Apply related words - Select this option to expand results to include true synonyms and plurals of your terms. Example: A search for Neoplasm with the Apply Related Words expander applied would also search for Tumor, Tumour, Tumors, Tumor's, Tumours, and Tumour's. Also search within the full-text of the articles - Select this option to search for your keywords within the full-text of articles, as well as abstract and citation information. This applies only to words not qualified by a field code.

9 Search Options Using wildcards & truncation Question-mark wildcard To use the? wildcard, enter your search terms and replace each unknown character with a?.e.g. type ne?t to find all records containing neat, nest or next. Pound/hash wildcard To use the # wildcard, enter your search terms and place # where an alternate spelling might contain an extra character. E.g. type colo#r to find all citations containing color or colour. Asterisk wildcard (Truncation symbol) To use the asterisk (*) wildcard, enter the root of a search term and replace the ending with an *. E.g. type comput* to find the words computer or computing. The asterisk (*) may also be used between words to match any word. For example, 'a midsummer * dream' will return results that contain the exact phrase, 'a midsummer night s dream.'

23 Proximity Searches The proximity operators are composed of a letter (N or W) and a number (to specify the number of words). The proximity operator is placed between the words that are to be searched, as follows: Near Operator (N) - N5 finds the words if they are within five words of one another regardless of the order in which they appear. For example, type NHS N5 leadership to find results that would match NHS leadership as well as leadership in the NHS Within Operator (W) - In the following example, W8 finds the words if they are within eight words of one another and in the order in which you entered them. For example, type NHS W8 leadership to find results that would match NHS leadership but would not match leadership in the NHS. In addition, multiple terms can be used on either side of the operator. See the following examples: (heart attack OR myocardial infarction) N5 (statins OR Hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA Reductase Inhibitors) Insulin W3 (diabetes OR diabetic)

25 Citation Matcher The Citation Matcher search screen lets you search for article citations for which you have incorrect or incomplete information. By entering the information you have into fields such as Publication, Date, Volume, and Issue, you can browse a list of article citations that match your criteria. Available in Academic Search Premier, CINAHL Plus with FT, ERIC and more see

26 Image Search Image Quick View The Image Quick View Collection is not a static database but is built based on the entire collection of databases in the EBSCOhost user group the customer is accessing. Content available in the Image Quick View Collection is subject to the databases a customer is subscribed to.

27 Image Search Image Collection The Image Collection is a static database of licensed and public domain images and is available to customers accessing EBSCOhost proprietary databases including, but not limited to, Academic Search Premier, Academic Search Elite, MasterFILE Premier, and Searchasaurus. The Image Collection contains over 341,000 images from Archive Photos, Canadian Press, Motion Picture & Television Archive, McClatchy, UPI, and Getty, as well as a variety of images from the public domain. Due to the variety of resources, these images can appear on a student's EBSCOhost Result List in Searchasaurus. Image collection categories include: Photographs Images from Canadian Press Maps from MapQuest Photographs from public domain sources

28 Search Alerts

29 Welcome to EBSCO s tutorial on Creating Search Alerts in EBSCOhost. Search Alerts save valuable research time, and can be set up to provide automatic notification whenever new search results become available.

30 Setting up a Search Alert from the result list is simple and can be done quickly. After performing your search, click on the Share link at the top of the result list and select alert from the resulting drop-down menu.

31 The alert set-up window will appear on the screen over your result list. Before saving alerts or saved searches, you need to be signed into your My EBSCOhost folder. Click the Sign In link to sign into your personal folder or create a new account.

32 Enter your user ID and password and click Login. If you need a User Name and Password, click on the Create a new Account link and follow the prompts. Search and Journal Alerts, as well as Saved Searches, are stored in your personalized (My EBSCOhost) folder, which can be created by EBSCOhost users at no charge.

33 Complete the Alert setup form selecting from the Frequency and Results Format drop-down lists. Enter the address(es) to which you want your future search results sent, and then click Save Alert. If you would like to view all available Search Alert customization settings, click the Advanced Settings link.

34 Publication Alerts

35 First, click on the Publications button along the top toolbar.

36 Enter the publication name in the Browse Publications field, click Browse and then click on the resulting link to the Publication Details page.

37 On the publication record, click on Share in the upper right corner. In the resulting drop-down menu, click Alert to open the Journal Alert setup window.

38 Set your alert parameters, add your address, and click Save Alert. You will now be alerted when a new issue becomes available. You can also click the Advanced Settings link if you would like to access all of the available alert customization options.

39 A result list is displayed. Under Source Types on the left side, click Show More and then check the SWOT Analyses source type. Click Update to view a result list limited to SWOT Analyses.
