2 SecurDisc - the technology SecurDisc is an innovative security technology that features stable hardware and software coding. Data integrity is increased by checksums stored on the disc, redundant storage, and a sophisticated data management system. Password protection and data encryption using SecurDisc protect your data against unauthorized access. In addition, you can attach a digital signature to the disc, enabling the origin and legal validity of the data to be verified. Another noteworthy feature of SecurDisc is the highly effective duplication protection, which allows you to effectively control the distribution of your PDF files. Requirements Nero Express must be installed on the computer before you can create a SecurDisc disc. In addition, a SecurDisc -capable drive (for example from HLDS/LG) must be connected. Please note that the SecurDisc duplication protection feature for PDF files can only be used on DVDs. To read PDF files with SecurDisc duplication protection and/or SecurDisc access protection, in addition to a SecurDisc -capable drive you will need SecurDisc Viewer, which you can download free of charge at To read other files password-protected against authorized access or assigned a digital signature using SecurDisc, you will need InCD or InCD Reader, which you can download free of charge at In this case you do not need a SecurDisc -capable drive. The general system requirements for the Nero program package as specified in the QuickStart Guide for the Nero Suite also apply (see under Downloads). Creating SecurDisc discs: Nero Express You can create SecurDisc discs with the help of drives that support SecurDisc (for example from HLDS/LG) and Nero Express. To this end, Nero Express combines all the performance and efficiency of Nero Burning ROM with a simplified user interface and guides you quickly and easily through the process of creating a SecurDisc disc. The default settings are chosen to automatically produce the best possible result. It couldn't be easier to use: simply select the SecurDisc project, add the files, and start burning. Please note that the SecurDisc duplication protection feature for PDF files can only be used on DVDs. Nero Express is available in three different versions: Nero Express, Nero Express Essentials, and Nero Express Essentials SE. Nero Express and Nero Express Essentials offer the full range of features, only Nero Express Essentials SE does not offer a number of features (including burning of SecurDisc discs). 2
3 Reading SecurDisc discs: InCD or InCD Reader You can read discs created with SecurDisc technology using InCD or the free InCD Reader from Nero. InCD is part of the Nero 7 Suite, however it is not automatically installed during the standard installation routine and must therefore be subsequently installed. Reading copy-protected SecurDisc DVDs: SecurDisc Viewer SecurDisc Viewer is a standalone application that is part of the SecurDisc technology platform. This is the one application that allows you to open PDF documents that have been password-protected against unauthorized access using SecurDisc and/or protected against unauthorized duplication using the special SecurDisc duplication protection feature. The SecurDisc duplication protection feature lets you effectively control the distribution of electronic documents since copy-protected documents (only PDFs at this time) can only be read, not copied; in other words, they cannot be edited or sent electronically. Files protected using SecurDisc can only be distributed using an original DVD which is read by the recipient with the help of a SecurDisc drive and the SecurDisc Viewer application. The files cannot be copied or saved under another name. SecurDisc Viewer can be downloaded free of charge at 3
4 Compiling and burning SecurDisc data discs If a SecurDisc -capable DVD recorder is installed on your computer, you can compile all types of files and folders using Nero Express and burn them as a SecurDisc CD or SecurDisc DVD. If you have a SecurDisc -capable CD recorder, you can only burn data CDs and the option for burning a DVD is already grayed out in the start screen. The procedure for both compilation methods is identical. To create a SecurDisc data CD/DVD, proceed as follows: 1. Click on the Data menu icon in the Nero Express start screen. The SecurDisc Data CD and SecurDisc Data DVD options are displayed. Nero Express start screen 2. Click on the option you want, SecurDisc Data CD or SecurDisc Data DVD. 10 Accessing SecurDisc discs You need different tools to open different types of files protected with SecurDisc : SecurDisc DVDs with copy-protected and/or access-protected PDF files For these you need a SecurDisc -capable drive (for example from HLDS/LG) and SecurDisc Viewer, which you can download free of charge from If the SecurDisc DVD has been created with duplication protection that can be removed with a password, you will need a SecurDisc -capable drive and InCD or InCD Reader. These allow you to remove the duplication protection. SecurDisc discs with no duplication protection For these you need InCD or InCD Reader (which you can download free of charge from You do not need a SecurDisc -capable drive in this case. Reading copy-protected PDF files To read copy-protected and/or access-protected PDF files on a SecurDisc DVD, proceed as follows: 1. Download SecurDisc Viewer from and install it. 2. Insert the SecurDisc DVD in your SecurDisc drive. 3. Open SecurDisc Viewer. The Welcome screen is displayed. SecurDisc Viewer Welcome screen 4. Click on the Open File icon. The Open window is displayed with a list of all PDF files stored on the SecurDisc DVD in the SecurDisc drive. 10
11 5. Select the desired PDF file and click on the Open button. If the PDF file does not have any additional access protection, it will be displayed in the SecurDisc Viewer - Document window. 6. If the selected PDF file is password-protected against unauthorized access, the Password Protection window will be displayed. Fig. 1: Password Protection window 7. Enter the password in the input area that is displayed. 8. Click on the OK button. The selected PDF file is displayed in SecurDisc Viewer. SecurDisc Viewer only allows you to view copy-protected PDF files. You cannot edit them, save them under a different name, or otherwise duplicate them. Each additional copy-protected PDF file that you open is displayed in an additional instance of SecurDisc Viewer, i.e. in its own window. You can close these additional windows without exiting SecurDisc Viewer. If you close the first instance, however, all additional SecurDisc Viewer windows will be closed as well. Verifying digital signatures A digital signature can also be added to the PDF files on a SecurDisc DVD; this signature can be used to determine whether or not the original files have been manipulated. To verify the signature of a PDF document, proceed as follows: 1. Open the PDF file. 2. In the SecurDisc Viewer - Document window, select Verify Digital Signature from the File menu. The Verify Digital Signature window is displayed. Fig. 2: Verify Digital Signature window 11

The progress bar shows the progress of the verification process. When complete, the message "The digital signature was successfully verified with the selected public key" is displayed. Reading SecurDisc discs with or without removable duplication protection If InCD is installed, both the InCD icon ( ) and the SecurDisc icon ( ) appear in the system tray after the computer has been booted (no special link is created in the program directory). The Always show a notification when a SecurDisc disc is inserted box is checked by default in the SecurDisc - Options window, which means SecurDisc automatically sends a notification when a SecurDisc disc is detected in a drive. In this way access takes place automatically, so to speak. The windows appropriate to the properties of the detected SecurDisc disc for entering a password and/or a digital signature are also displayed. You can enter these conveniently here, after which you can immediately access all data on the SecurDisc disc via Microsoft Windows Explorer. Access to the SecurDisc disc can be protected with access passwords and/or digital signatures. In addition, PDF files on SecurDisc DVDs can be protected against duplication. If a retrieval password has been defined, you can remove this duplication protection with InCD Reader. To do this, proceed as follows: 1. Insert the SecurDisc disc into a drive of the computer on which InCD or InCD Reader is installed. 2. Double-click on the SecurDisc icon ( ) in the system tray. The SecurDisc - Drive and disc features window is displayed. 12
