4 Introduction This guide describes how to make configuration changes in StarWind Highly Available devices. Particularly, changing an HA Partner Node, Manual Synchronization starting after failure, changing Synchronization and Heartbeat Networks, changing Synchronization priority and Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol configuration. 5 Changing an HA Partner Node To change an HA partner node, follow the next steps: 1. Right-click the required HA device and select Replication Manager from the shortcut menu. TECHNICAL PAPER 5

6 2. In HA Device Replication manager, click the Remove replica menu button. 3. Click Yes to confirm the deletion. TECHNICAL PAPER 6

7 4. Click the Add replica button. 5. Select the Replication Mode option. TECHNICAL PAPER 7

8 6. Specify the Partner Node. Click Next to continue. 7. Choose the Partner Device option. TECHNICAL PAPER 8

9 8. Specify the device location. Click Next to continue. 9. Click Change Network Settings. TECHNICAL PAPER 9

10 10. Select the Synchronization and Heartbeat Channels. 11. Choose Synchronize from existing Device. TECHNICAL PAPER 10

12 Manual Synchronization If synchronization of HA device nodes does not start automatically after you bring the nodes online, start it manually or mark the device as synchronized. 1. Right-click on the device and choose Mark as Synchronized. 2. Click Yes to start the synchronization. NOTE: If you do not know which target has to be used as a source of synchronization, check the Server Log or Event tabs of each StarWind Server. Select the StarWind service that was the last one to go offline. TECHNICAL PAPER 12

13 3. To start the HA nodes manual synchronization, right-click the required HA device and select Synchronization from the shortcut menu. TECHNICAL PAPER 13

14 Changing Synchronization and Heartbeat Channels To change synchronization or heartbeat channels or replace a NIC, follow the next steps: 1. Launch StarWind Management Console and connect to the first StarWind HA partner node. 2. Right-click the required HA device and click Replication Node Interfaces on the shortcut menu. Important note: In order to avoid the split brain issue, at least one of the Heartbeat interfaces must be active while reconfiguring Synchronization and Heartbeat channels. TECHNICAL PAPER 14

15 3. The Network interface can be added or removed in HA Device Replication Node Interfaces manager that has appeared. 4. To add the device, click Add Interface and specify the IP address. Click checkbox to use a new interface as a Heartbeat Network. Leave this check box blanked to use the new interface as a Synchronization network. TECHNICAL PAPER 15

16 Changing Synchronization Priority 1. To change the Synchronization priority, right-click on the needed device and choose Change Synchronization Priority. 2. Set the required traffic quotas for Synchronization Channel. TECHNICAL PAPER 16

17 Configuring CHAP for an НA Device 1. Launch StarWind Management Console and connect the first StarWind HA partner node. 2. Select a target of the HA device and click Add Permission. 3. Specify the device values: CHAP name, Secret. 4. Click OK. TECHNICAL PAPER 17

18 5. Check the new permission on the target in StarWind Management Console. 6. Select a partner device on the second StarWind HA partner node. 7. Right-click the HA device and select Change Partner Authentication Settings TECHNICAL PAPER 18

19 8. Select Authentication Type. 9. Specify the device values: CHAP name, Local Secret and click OK. TECHNICAL PAPER 19

20 10. Perform the same steps for the target on the second StarWind server and for the device from the first server. NOTE: If you don t change the partner authentication settings, StarWind will not be able to synchronize HA devices to the partner node after the service restart. Specify Local Name and Local Secret to connect to the client node. Take the following steps on the ESXi servers: 1. Launch vsphere Client and select the ESXi server required. 2. Switch to the Configuration tab and select Storage Adapters in the Storage pane. 3. Select a storage adapter from the iscsi Software Adapter list, go to the Properties section and choose the Edit Authentication pane. TECHNICAL PAPER 20

21 4. Select Unidirectional CHAP. TECHNICAL PAPER 21

22 5. Specify the CHAP Name and Secret. NOTE: If the mutual CHAP was specified earlier, a bidirectional CHAP Name and Secret need to be specified as well. Click OK. TECHNICAL PAPER 22

23 On the Hyper-V servers, follow the next steps: 1. Launch iscsi Initiator: Start->Administrative Tools->iSCSI Initiator. 2. Select the required Target and click Connect. TECHNICAL PAPER 23

24 3. Enable Multi-path and click Advanced. 4. Select the Enable CHAP log on checkbox and specify Name and Target secret. TECHNICAL PAPER 24

25 Extending HA Device 1. Open StarWind Management Console. 2. Select the device for extending. 3. Open Extend wizard in one of the following ways: Right-click the device and select Extend Size of HA (High Availability) Device from the shortcut menu. Select the HA device and click the Extend Size of HA (High Availability) Device button on the toolbar. TECHNICAL PAPER 25

26 4. As the Extending Size of HA (High Availability Device) wizard appears, specify the amount of disk space to be added to the virtual disk volume. 5. Click Extend to extend the virtual disk. Note: Alternatively, the PowerShell script can be used to extend the HA device. The script example is available in the StarWind installation folder. Default location is C:\Program Files\StarWind Software\StarWind\StarWindX\Samples\powershell\ExtendDevice.ps1 Note: In addition to assigning extra space for NTFS/VMFS partition, the partition on top of image file should be extended as well since StarWind image file emulates only the physical drive. 27 On the Hyper-V servers, follow the next steps: 1. Open Disk Management Console. 2. Right-click the existing disk and select Extend Volume. 3. Click Next. TECHNICAL PAPER 27

28 4. Specify the amount of disk space you want to add to the volume. 5. Click Next. TECHNICAL PAPER 28

29 6. Check the volume in the Disk Management Console. TECHNICAL PAPER 29

30 Take the following steps on ESXi servers: 1. Open the Storage tab in vsphere. 2. Select the data storage for extending. 3. Click Increase. 4. Select the available storage for extending. TECHNICAL PAPER 30
