1 N F Disk Array Controller (S-ATA) BIOS Update Procedure (BIOS Revision: ) Rev. 1, IMPORTANT: NEC EXPRESSBUILDER CD-ROM (provided with the computer) is necessary for updating the BIOS. Have it ready before starting the update procedure. Array setting may be necessary while you are updating the BIOS. Make sure of the array setting procedure explained in the user's guide of the disk array controller. Have the guide ready beforehand. Part of the update procedure varies depending on the model of the computer. Make sure of the model (e.g., NEC Express5800/120Eg) of your computer beforehand. Be sure to make a backup copy of data before starting the BIOS update procedure. Read this document before attempting to update the BIOS. Confirmation before Starting the Update Procedure 1-1 Introduction This document explains the procedure for updating the BIOS of N F Disk Array Controller (S-ATA). 1-2 Confirming the BIOS Revision Confirm the BIOS revision, and update the BIOS as needed. Confirm the BIOS revision on the POST screen. The latest BIOS version is When the BIOS revision is : The BIOS does not need updating. When the BIOS revision is 1.xx.xx.xx: Update the BIOS. [Confirming the BIOS revision on the POST screen] 1. Start the computer. 2. When the following messages are displayed on the POST screen, make sure of the BIOS revision. Make sure of the model of your computer in the table below. Model of Computer Update Procedure NEC Express5800/120Eg Perform the procedure in Chapter 2 after Section 1-4. Models other than NEC Express5800/120Eg Skip Section 1-4, and perform the procedure in Chapter 2.

4 4 1-4 Preparation for NEC Express5800/120Eg If the BIOS revision of your disk array controller is 1.xx.xx.xx, the system cannot boot from the CD-ROM or Floppy Disk (FD) unless an array is set, so the BIOS cannot be updated. In this case, creating an array makes possible to boot from the CD-ROM/FD. The conditions for setting an array are as follows. The setting of "RAID Mode" is not defined. Set an arbitrary RAID mode. The setting of "Stripe Block" is not defined. Set an arbitrary stripe block. Set "Fast Init" to "OFF". (For action taken if you set it to "ON" by mistake, see IMPORTANT below.) You can use the array that was set before updating the BIOS after updating the BIOS. Also, you can delete the array that was set in this procedure after updating the BIOS. For more information about array configuration, refer to the User's Guide provided with the disk array controller. IMPORTANT: If "Fast Init" is set to "ON", the whole screen may turn blue after the array setting is saved (Ctrl + Y are pressed), and the subsequent processing cannot be performed. However, the array is set correctly. So, after restarting the computer by pressing the reset button, you can perform the procedures in chapter 2. * This symptom does not occur after the BIOS is updated. If an array is already set, you can perform the procedures in chapter 2. Note that if the array is offline, the status is the same as when an array has not been set, and the system cannot boot from the CD-ROM/FD. In this case, recover the offline state (for example, deleting the current array and setting a new array), and then perform the procedures in chapter 2. * If the array is critical, the system can boot from the CD-ROM/FD. NOTES: Once the BIOS is updated to the revision , the system can boot from the CD-ROM/FD even while an array is not set.

5 5 2. BIOS Update Procedure 2-1 Creating an Update Disk 1. Download the N F Disk Array Controller BIOS module (BIOS24E.EXE) into an arbitrary directory. (This example downloads it into the C:\BIOS directory.) 2. Click [Start]? [Run]. 3. Enter "C:\BIOS\BIOS24E.EXE" into the Open field, and click [OK]. The following eight files are extracted in the C:\BIOS directory. A.BAT B.BAT Fwmsgcue.inf Fwmsggue.inf PFLASH.exe RAMD.COM REBOOT.COM s150f.bin 1,113 bytes 2,005 bytes 999 bytes 3,264 bytes 37,553 bytes 256 bytes 254 bytes 98,546 bytes 4. Copy all the extracted files onto a formatted floppy disk (which is called a "BIOS update disk"). 5. Insert the NEC EXPRESSBUILDER CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and start the computer. 6. On the NEC EXPRESSBUILDER start screen (top menu), select [Tools]? [BIOS/FW/etc. Update]. * If the system cannot be started from NEC EXPRESSBUILDER, see Section When the message "Please insert the floppy disk which contains update module into the drive." is displayed, insert the "BIOS update disk" into the FD drive, and select [Execute]. NOTE: Make sure that the "BIOS update disk" is not write-protected. 8. When the message "The files needed for the update will be copied from the CD-ROM to the floppy disk." is displayed, select [Execute]. 9. When the message "Please remove the CD-ROM.... automatically rebooted for booting from the floppy disk." is displayed, remove the NEC EXPRESSBUILDER CD-ROM from the CD-ROM drive while the "BIOS update disk" is inserted in the FD drive, and select [Execute]. NOTE: Do not remove the "BIOS update disk" in this stage. 10. The computer is restarted from the "BIOS update disk".

6 6 2-2 Updating the BIOS IMPORTANT: Confirm that "BIOS update disk" was created according to "2-1. Creating an Update Disk". Never turn OFF the computer's power switch or restart the computer while performing the BIOS update procedure. 1. The following screen appears after the computer is restarted Starting ROM-DOS 789 Datalight ROM-DOS Version 7.1 Copyright (c) Datalight, Inc. A:\>_ 2. Enter "pflash_/f_s150f.bin" from the keyboard, and press Enter. * "_" indicates a space. A:\>pflash /f s150.bin <ENTER> 3. Updating of the BIOS is started, and the screen changes as shown below. A:\>pflash /f s150.bin *********** PFlash Memory Utility V *********** (Do not reset/power off during flash) Updating card 0... NOTE: Do not remove the "BIOS update disk" during updating. 4. When "OK" is displayed several seconds later, updating of the BIOS is finished. A:\>pflash /f s150.bin *********** PFlash Memory Utility V *********** (Do not reset/power off during flash) Updating card 0...OK. 5. Remove the "BIOS update disk" from the FD drive, and restart the computer.

Notes on Updating the BIOS This chapter explains some points that you should confirm after updating the BIOS. 3-1 Note for using NEC Express5800/120Ef When installing Windows Server 2003 by using Express setup in NEC Express5800/120Ef, configure the parameter for "NEC ESMPRO Agent" to be installed. There are the following two procedures in order to configure the parameters. Even if you use either of those procedures, "NEC ESMPRO Agent" is set to be installed by default setting. Do not change the setting. (1) When you configure the parameter by using "Configuration Diskette Creator" As for the item of "NEC ESMPRO Agent" in the Application setting menu, it is checked by default setting. Do not remove the check. (2) When you configure the parameter in Express Setup" As for the item of "NEC ESMPRO Agent" in the Application menu, it is set to Install by default setting. Do not change the setting. IMPORTANT: Even if NEC ESMPRO Agent is not needed for your system operation, install Windows Server 2003 by setting NEC ESMPRO Agent to install. Then, uninstall NEC ESMPRO Agent after Windows server 2003 has been installed. NOTE: When you install Windows Server 2003 by manual setup, it is out of above note. For the manual setup procedure, see the User s Guide attached with the basic unit and N F Disk Array Controller (S-ATA) Supplementary Setup Procedure in N F Disk Array Controller (S-ATA) attached with this product. If you install Windows Server 2003 without installing NEC ESMPRO Agent, it displays the following message and the installation may stop. In such case, try again the Express setup according to above note, or perform the manual setup. If the installation is completed without the following message, continue operation. Windows Setup ================================ Setup was unable to install Windows Boot Loader. Ensure that your C: drive is formatted and that the drive is not damaged. Setup cannot continue. Press ENTER to exit.

9 9 3-2 Changes in the FastBuild Utility The function of FastBuild Utility is partially changed by the updating of the BIOS Changes in Delete Array Procedure The Delete Array procedure with the FastBuild Utility is changed as follows: The message shown below was not displayed conventionally when Delete Array was executed by pressing Ctrl + Y, but it is now displayed. Press Y to clear the master boot record (M BR) written at the beginning of the logical drive area when you delete the array. Press N not to clear the master boot record. Would you like to clean the MBR and reserved sectors? Doing so will result in a total loss of all data. < Press Y to continue or N to return to menu > IMPORTANT: If the master boot record (MBR) is cleared at the same time the array is deleted, the OS partition information is also cleared. As a result, data is all erased from the hard disk. When the above message is displayed, do not press Y except when you reinstall the OS RAID10 The definition of the RAID levels displayed in the FastBuild Utility is changed as follows: "RAID10" is displayed for an array for which "RAID0+1" was conventionally displayed. Thus, new optional RAID levels are RAID0, RAID1, RAID5, JBOD, and RAID10 when a new array is set. "RAID10" is a RAID level representing the span configuration of RAID1. The expression of "RAID0+1" is simply changed to "RAID10", and the same operation and array setting procedures as for the conventional "RAID0+1" are applied to "RAID10". 3-3 Default Setting of Fast Init If the BIOS is updated from the revision " ", the setting of Fast Init is changed as follows: The default setting of "Fast Init" in "Define Array Menu" is "OFF" for the BIOS " ". To clear data from the hard disk when you set an array, change the setting of "Fast Init" to "ON" in manual mode.
