Assignment Manager Blackboard has a tool called the Assignment Manager that facilitates file submissions from students. The Assignment Manager feature can be used in any content area (e.g. Course Information, Course Documents, etc.) and should not be confused with the area called Assignments in the course menu. The Digital Dropbox tool is no longer available but the Assignment Manager should serve your needs. Advantages of the Assignment Manager include: easy way to see which students have submitted assignments direct link to the Grade Center easy download and removal of files automatic renaming of file with the assignment name followed by the username and original file name (e.g. Essay1_RUNewark_Word.doc) easy submission on the student s part Adding an Assignment You can create Assignments and add them to any content area. Assignments list the name, point value, and a description for class work. Instructors also have the option of including attachments to an Assignment. The Grade Center is automatically updated with assignment information. Change Edit Mode to On if it is not already by clicking on the option at the top right of the window. Click on the area in the course where you would like to post the assignment (e.g. Assignments or Unit 1). Click on the contextual menu for Create Assessment and select Assignment. Enter a Name (required) and select a Color (optional). Enter Instructions if needed. Bb 9.1 Assignment Manager Page 1 September 2010
You can attach a file using the Attach File button from the Instructions box OR by using the Browse My Computer button from Area 2 Assignment Files. Locate, select and Open the appropriate file entering a Link Title if necessary. Enter the number of Points Possible. Assignments are integrated with the Grade Center. You can modify the grade s options through the Grade Center. By default, the assignment will be Available with a single attempt but you can modify the Number of Attempts and Display After and Display Until options. You must The display dates and times are hard Bb 9.1 Assignment Manager Page 2 September 2010
dates and times meaning the link for submission will only be available during that period students cannot submit early or late. You may optionally select the Track Number of Views option. Note: You must check the boxes to the left of Display After and Display Until in order for these options to take effect. You can set a Due Date by selecting the checkbox and then setting a Date and Time. This is a soft date meaning that students can submit late papers unless otherwise specified in Area 4 Availability. By default, an assignment is set up for All Students Individually but there is a group option available. Click Submit at the top right or bottom right. A Success message will be displayed. Bb 9.1 Assignment Manager Page 3 September 2010
Viewing and Grading an Individual Submission Student submissions are accessible through the Grade Center from the Assignments tool as well as the Full Grade Center. The link for the Grade Center is under the Control Panel on the left below the course menu. Click once on the Grade Center link to expand the menu and then click on Assignments. As the students submit, a green exclamation mark will be displayed in the Assignment column. Click on the contextual menu to the right of the green exclamation and select the Attempt. If there are multiple submissions, they will be listed under Submission History. Bb 9.1 Assignment Manager Page 4 September 2010
Click on the link under Attached Files. Student comments will be posted here as well. Enter a Grade and Feedback for the student. If you would like to return an edited file to the student, click on the Browse My Computer button to locate, select and Open the file. You can enter option Instructor Notes which are private to the instructor; students cannot see the Grading Notes or any attached files. Click Save and Next to move to the next submission or Save and Exit. Bb 9.1 Assignment Manager Page 5 September 2010
Removing an Individual Submission By default, an assignment allows a single submission so if a student submits an incorrect file the instructor must clear out the initial submission before the student can resubmit the assignment. This will delete the file(s) from the system so you may want to download the earlier version first for your records before clearing a submission. Click once on the Grade Center link to expand the menu and then click on Full Grade Center or Assignments. Click on the contextual menu to the right of the green exclamation and select the View Grade Details. Click the Clear Attempt button and click OK to confirm the assignment removal. Bb 9.1 Assignment Manager Page 6 September 2010
Downloading Multiple Submissions You can download some or all of your students submissions in one process for saving or editing purposes. Click once on the Grade Center link to expand the menu and then click on Full Grade Center or Assignments. Click on the contextual menu to the right of the assignment s title in the column heading and select the Assignment File Download. Bb 9.1 Assignment Manager Page 7 September 2010
Select the individual submissions to download or click the check box to the left of the Name column to select all submissions and click Submit. Click on the Download Assignments Now link. You will be prompted to Open or Save the file to a convenient location. Note: All of the files are combined into one zipped file. Most computers have a zip utility already installed so when you open the zipped file it will open into the separate files. If you are on a newer Windows Bb 9.1 Assignment Manager Page 8 September 2010
computer that does not have a zip utility, you can download 7-Zip ( which is available free of charge. Bb 9.1 Assignment Manager Page 9 September 2010
