The audience for this document includes, Customer Support, field personnel, and customers. Users should have some background in Windows terminology, Web browser operation, and a knowledge of where to find the TCP/IP and subnet mask information for their system. Manual Organization This section outlines the chapters and summarizes their content. Chapter 1, Replacing a Hard Disk Drive, provides a table that summarizes information about the hard drives in each Silver Peak Appliance. It describes how to remove and add a disk from the database, using either the Appliance Manager or the Global Management System (GMS). It also illustrates the physical replacement steps. Chapter 2, Replacing a Power Supply, describes the procedures for replacing an authorized, redundant power supply. Chapter 3, Replacing a Fiber Interface Module, describes the procedures for replacing an SR (or LR) fiber interface module. 9 CHAPTER 1 Replacing a Hard Disk Drive This chapter describes how to replace a hard disk for those appliances for which the customer is authorized to make the replacement. In This Chapter Using the Management Software See page 2. Physically Replacing a Disk See page 4. The appliances feature RAID arrays with encrypted disk drives. Some models also use SSDs (Solid State Disks). RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent (or Inexpensive) Disks, a category of disk drives that employs two or more drives, in combination, for fault tolerance and improved performance. With the exception of the NX-1700, NX-2500 and NX-2600 appliances (which only have one hard drive), Silver Peak ensures recoverability by mirroring data on paired hard drives. CAUTION Silver Peak does not authorize customer to replace the hard disk drive in the NX-1700, NX-2500, or NX Replacing it voids the warranty. Contact Customer Support for return and repair instructions. If a disk fails, the management software either the Appliance Manager or the GMS (Global Management System) displays a critical alarm, and the specific disk s LED stops illuminating on the appliance. 1

10 Silver Peak WAN Optimization Appliances Field Replaceable Unit Guide Using the Management Software In the model-specific instructions, you ll be asked to use the browser-based interface: Before physically extracting a hard disk, you must use the management software to first remove it from the array. This takes the disk off-line. After physically replacing a hard disk, you must use the management software to insert it into the array. This tells the software to go discover the disk and put it online. You can either use the Appliance Manager or the GMS. A display and discussion of their relevant screens follows: Using the Appliance Manager The Maintenance - Disk Management page lets you add, remove, and monitor the disk. Displays the progress of a new disk that s being rebuilt from its array partner. Otherwise, this field displays 100 percent. If a disk has been physically removed, the Status is NOT-IN-SERVICE and no Serial Number displays. If a disk s Status is DEGRADED, you need to Remove it from the database, For a pop-up showing the disk numbers and positions, roll the cursor over Disk Layout. 2 PN Rev C

11 Chapter 1 Replacing a Hard Disk Drive Using the GMS Before physically extracting any hard drive, you need to first remove it from the array by using the Disk Management page, accessed via Report > Disk Management > Disks. When you use Action > Remove to remove the disk from the database, the Status becomes OPERATOR REMOVED. After physically adding any hard drive, you need to use the management software to insert it into the array by using the Disk Management page, accessed via Report > Disk Management. When you use Action > Insert to add a disk to the database, the Status cycles through DEGRADED, then REBUILDING, and finally OK. 3

13 Chapter 1 Replacing a Hard Disk Drive Replacing a disk in the NX-9700, NX-8700, NX-7700, NX-5700, NX-3700, or NX-2700 The first disk on the left is Disk 0. The numbers increment by one from left to right. These appliances hard disks are hot-swappable. The NX-9700 and NX-8700 have two possible backplane configurations. The newer revision was released in March Note that the NX-9700 and NX-8700 appliances contain a mix of SATA hard disk drives and SSDs (solid-state drives). Appliance Manager GMS Go to the Maintenance - Disk Management page, select the disk and click Remove. Use Report > Disk Management > Disks to access the Disk Management page. Select the disk and then use Action > Remove. 2 Unlatch the hard drive by pinching the latch together and then pulling the tab towards yourself. Pinch the latch together. Grasp the tab and pull forward to release. 3 Pull the disk out of its slot. 4 Insert the new disk and push until it clicks into place. Push the top of the disk inward until it clicks into place. Push the latch against the tray to secure it. 5 To put the disk back online, do one of the following: Use either to do this... Appliance Manager On the Maintenance - Disk Management page, select the disk and click Insert. GMS On the Disk Management page, select the disk and then use Action > Insert. The drive powers up. 7

Select the disk and then use Action > Remove. 2 Unlatch the hard drive by pressing the end of the blue button toward the left and then pulling the tab towards yourself. Depress the blue button leftward, into the tab. Slip your finger behind the tab and pull forward to release. 3 Pull the disk out of its slot. 4 Insert the new disk and push until it clicks into place. Push the tray inward until it clicks into place. Push the tab against the tray to secure it. 5 To put the disk back online, do one of the following: Use either to do this... Appliance Manager On the Maintenance - Disk Management page, select the disk and click Insert. GMS On the Disk Management page, select the disk and then use Action > Insert. The drive powers up. 9

These two slots house the hard disks you can remove and replace. Disk 0 Disk 1 1 To take the disk off-line, do one of the following: Use either to do this... Appliance Manager a Go to the Maintenance - Disk Management page, select the disk and click Remove. b Power down the appliance by going to the Maintenance - Restart System page and clicking Shutdown. GMS a Use Report > Disk Management > Disks to access the Disk Management page. b c d e f Select the disk and then use Action > Remove. From the menu, select Maintenance > Reboot/Shutdown. The Reboot/Shutdown window appears. Click View to verify that you ve selected the desired target NX. In the Operation field, select Shutdown. Click Shutdown Now. 2 After the NX appliance powers down, unlatch the hard drive by pressing the end of the blue button toward the left and then pulling the tab towards yourself. Although these photos show the NX-7600, the physical motions required to remove and re-insert the disks are accurate for the NX Depress the blue button leftward, into the tab. Select the disk and then use Action > Remove. 2 Before installing the new disk drive assembly into the chassis, you ll remove the failed assembly from the chassis. The disk drive assembly consists of the drive tray and the hard disk drive. To release the failed assembly from its locking position, press the red release tab located on the drive tray door. Appliance Manager a Go to the Maintenance - Disk Management page, select the disk and click Remove. b Power down the appliance by going to the Maintenance - Restart System page and clicking Shutdown. GMS a Use Report > Disk Management > Disks to access the Disk Management page. b c d e f Select the disk and then use Action > Remove. From the menu, select Maintenance > Reboot/Shutdown. The Reboot/Shutdown window appears. Click View to verify that you ve selected the desired target NX. In the Operation field, select Shutdown. Click Shutdown Now. 2 After the appliance has powered down, open the front cover of the NX-3500 by turning the knob one quarter-turn clockwise and pulling forward. 27 CHAPTER 2 Replacing a Power Supply This chapter describes how to replace a power supply for those appliances for which the customer is authorized to make the replacement. CAUTION Silver Peak does NOT authorize the customer to replace the power supplies in the NX-2500 or NX Replacing it voids the warranty. WARNING Do not open the casing of a power supply. Opening the casing of a power supply voids the warranty. Only a qualified technician from the manufacturer has the authority to access and/or service power supplies. 29 Chapter 2 Replacing a Power Supply Replacing a Power Supply in the NX-9700, NX-9610, NX-8700, NX-8600, NX-7700, NX-7600, NX-5700, NX-5600, NX-3700, NX-3600, or NX-2700 CAUTION Unplug the power cord before removing the power supply!!! Note The photos are of the NX-x600 series. The power supplies in the NX-x700 appliances look recognizably similar. The NX-3600 power supplies are oriented 90 counterclockwise from these photos. To access the power supply Locate the release tab on the right side of the power supply. 1. Turn the screw counter-clockwise to loosen it. 2. To release the power supply from its locking position, squeeze the screw and the release tab together. Then hold it there while you... The release tab 3....grip the handle to remove the power supply from the chassis. 4. Once the power supply module is released from its locking position, remove it from the chassis. To insert a new power supply, repeat the procedure in reverse. 21

To access the power supply Note The drawings reflect the procedure, not the specific number of power supplies. 1 Locate the release tab on the left side of the power supply. 2 Push the release tab to the right to release the power supply from its locking position, as shown below: Once the power supply module is released from its locking position, remove it from the chassis. 3 4 To insert a new power supply, repeat the procedure in reverse. WARNING Opening the casing of a power supply voids the warranty. Only a a qualified technician from the manufacturer has the authority to access and/or service power supplies. 22 PN Rev C

31 Chapter 2 Replacing a Power Supply Replacing a Power Supply in the NX-3500 CAUTION Unplug the power cord before removing the power supply!!! To access the NX-3500 power supply Locate the release tab on the right side of the power supply. 1. Loosen the screw 2. Push the release tab to the left and hold it there to release the power supply from its locking position while you grip the handle to remove the power supply from the chassis. [This picture shows an out-or-service appliance. However, if you were removing the power supply from a live unit, you would first unplug the power supply that you re removing and leave the other power supply plugged in and running to prevent an interruption of service.] 4. Once the power supply module is released from its locking position, remove it from the chassis. To insert a new power supply, repeat the procedure in reverse. 33 CHAPTER 3 Replacing a Fiber Interface Module You have the option to separately order LR (Long Range) 10 Gbps Fiber Interfaces to replace the default SR (Short Reach) modules in the NX-9700 appliance. Silver Peak supports different module combinations. For example, you may have an SR (Short Reach) interface for the LAN side and an LR (or long range) for the WAN. These modules are hot-swappable. This chapter describes how to replace the modules. WARNING If you don t turn off the power while replacing the module, be sure to protect your eyes from exposure to the laser by being careful to avoid looking directly into the interface housing. You can distinguish the SR module from the LR module by the number on the label and the color of the handle. Module s handle is on the right side. 2 Lift the handle and rotate it 90 degrees to the left to release the module from its locking position. 3 Pull the handle to remove the module from the chassis. 4 To insert a new module, repeat the procedure in reverse. 35 CHAPTER 4 Restoring a Saved Configuration If you save your appliance configuration(s) to a location external to the appliance, then you can restore that configuration from that location to any appliance, as needed. Appliance Manager allows you to save a configuration, on an ad hoc basis, to a local disk, a URL, an SCP server, or an FTP. The GMS (Global Management System) allows you to save appliance configurations to the GMS server, on either a scheduled or an ad hoc basis. Because each management program saves files to different locations, you must restore a configuration with the same management program that you used to save it. When you click to select the method, the appropriate fields appear. A full pathname includes the drive (if required), starting or root directory, all attached subdirectories and ends with the file or object name. A full pathname requires an initial slash; no end slashes are required. In the Destination File Name field, enter the existing file name or rename the file. 4 Click Load. The Appliance Manager displays the progress. 5 To activate the downloaded file, select it and click Activate Selected. In the process, we ll rename it to newfilename: No slash before the directory name If you want to rename the file during the download, enter the new file name here. a b c d For the Remote Server Address field, enter either: the server IP address, as in , or the server name, if it s mapped to a local host table or a DNS server, as in <myserver> Enter the Remote User Name and Remote Password for the FTP server. For your Remote Relative Path field, enter the relative path. A relative path is a path relative to the current working directory. Its first character can be anything but the pathname separator (here, a forward slash). For example, if the ftp login directory is /home/<username>/, then the relative path would begin at the next subdirectory, as in, work/configfiles. The end slash isn t required, but is accepted. In the Destination File Name field, enter the existing file name or rename the file. 4 Click Load. System Replacement Procedure 1 Before removing the installed appliance, look at its configuration and write down the mgmt0 IP addresses / netmask and mgmt0 next-hop IP address. 2 If you haven t backed up the configuration, do it now, using either the Appliance Manager or the GMS. 3 Power down, disconnect, and remove the old appliance. 4 Physically install the new [replacement] appliance. If you need to review rack mount instructions, refer to Related Publications on page iv. 5 Using the NX Series Quick Start Guide [PN ], cable the appliance and configure the new appliance, as directed. 6 Make sure that the software revision in the new appliance is the same as in the replaced appliance: If the previous appliance was at a higher software revision, upgrade the new appliance to that revision. Use these procedures when migrating from one GMS server (physical or virtual) to another GMS server (physical or virtual). 46 Silver Peak WAN Optimization Appliances Field Replaceable Unit Guide What to Consider When you replace a GMS server in the network, you can configure the new GMS server in one of two ways: Restore the configuration from the old GMS server to the new GMS server. This is possible if you have a backup of the old GMS server. Before doing this, you must bring the new GMS server to the same image version as the old GMS server. Manually configure the new GMS server. If you don t have a backup, this is your only option. For instructions about how to initially configure a GMS server, refer to the Silver Peak Global Management System User s Guide [ ]. System Replacement Procedure Before shutting down the installed GMS server, you need to document some existing settings and also back up the configuration. Then you can easily restore them to the new GMS server. To prepare to remove the existing GMS server 1 For a copy of the current GMS server s backup information, go to Administration > System Properties > GMS Backup and take a screenshot. You ll need the information later. To exit, click Cancel. 2 In the GMS client s tree map, select the GMS server icon. 38 PN Rev C
