Always press the "Enter" key after each command entry. ================= 3 Supported Red Hat Linux Distributions ================= Intel has performed limited validation to ensure basic functionality of the Graphics Device Drivers for the following Red Hat Linux distributions: Distribution Red Hat Desktop 3.0 Update 3 Red Hat Desktop 3.0 Update 4 Red Hat Desktop 3.0 Update 5 Red Hat Desktop 4 Red Hat Desktop 4 Update 1 Red Hat Desktop 4 Update 2 Red Hat Desktop 4 Update 3 Red Hat Desktop 4 Update 4 Kernel Version EL Elsmp EL Elsmp EL Elsmp EL Elsmp EL x Elsmp x EL Elsmp EL x Elsmp x EL Elsmp EL x Elsmp x EL Elsmp EL x Elsmp x EL Elsmp EL x Elsmp x Pre Installation Requirements 4.1 Platform Hardware Requirements Prior to the installation of the Graphics Device Driver on an Intel(R) Desktop Board product, please ensure that the product meets the installation requirements defined in the following sub sections. 3 Intel(R) Platform Software Requirements Verify that the specific version of the kernel running on the platform meets the minimum required kernel version listed in Section 3 for the supported Linux distributions. If needed, check the currently running kernel version using the 'uname' command as follows: # uname r 5 Installing the Driver Package First of all, you need to determine if you need to install the Driver Package. Following two steps will help complete this work: Log onto the system as root. Do lspci command and look for the graphics controller identifiers as below: VGA Compatible Controller: Intel(R) 82845G/GL Chipset Integrated Graphics Device VGA Compatible Controller: Intel(R) 82865G Integrated Graphics Device VGA Compatible Controller: Intel(R) 915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family Graphics Controller VGA Compatible Controller: Integrated Graphics Controller (for D945 platform) Use the following matrix to determine whether or not you need to install the Driver Package: (A YES means you need to install the driver; a No means the driver is already in the distribution) Distribution D845 D865 D915 D RHEL3u3 No No Yes N/A RHEL3u4 No No Yes N/A RHEL3u5 No No Yes Yes RHEL4 No No Yes N/A RHEL4u1 No No No Yes RHEL4u2 No No No Yes RHEL4u3 No No No Yes RHEL4u4 No No No No Yes Yes Second, if the answer for your Distribution/Platform type entry is marked Yes, the graphics device driver needs to be installed. Please follow the following five steps to complete the installation: Step 1: Reboot the system. Step 2: Issue the init 3 command to enter its console mode. This command works in above RH distributions. If it can not automatically bring up a login prompt in console mode, you need to issue a ctl alt Function key, for example clt alt F3, to get a console login prompt to log in. Step 3: Stop the X mode. Because the graphics device driver installation must be performed in the situation where the X server is not running, you need to confirm that the X server is not running by doing the following command:

4 # ps ef grep X If the X server is still running, you will need to stop is by using the kill command. Either do a killall 9 X. Step 4: Graphics Driver Installation. Perform the installation of the graphics driver by using the following command: # rpm ihv dri Intel v <mmdd>.<i386 x86_64>.rpm The example of <mmdd> is Observe the output of the rpm command. If there are any errors such as compiler not found, or kernel module did not compile, please note that this is a failure. You can opt to do troubleshooting at this time, but for reporting purposes, this is a failure. Step 5: Reboot the system. X should come up in the default (vesa driver) mode. If X does not come up at this stage, please note this is a failure. You can opt to do troubleshooting to pinpoint the problem if time and resources allow. =========== 6 Verifying Driver Was Installed Correctly =========== To verify the installation, use the X configuration facility in the above Red Hat distributions to configure X. Following is the click sequence to access the Red Hat X configuration facility: Applications >System Settings >Display Please do the following steps to verify the driver installation: Step1: See the current X configuration. You should see the display device type (I810) in the offerings. If you don t, you need to report this as a failure. Step 2: Re configure the X mode. The important tasks here are to enable the 3D acceleration and setting the bit depth. Click the Display tab to change the resolution and the color depth. The color depth should be either 16 bit or 24 bit. Eight bit depth is not supported. The Advanced tab will allow you to change monitor and video card settings. On the D915 platform, the video card choice should be either Intel 915 or Intel 915G for enabling the 3D acceleration feature. Step 3: Close the X configuration facility and reboot the system. When the system has come up, log in (using the GUI) and run the glxinfo more command. You are expecting to see the Direct Rendering set to Yes. If it is set to no, you must report this as a failure. ========================= 7 Known Issues and Errata ========================= There is an unconfirmed issue when trying to use 800 by 600 bit resolution with the 8 bit color palate (256 colors). This problem may exist when using RHEL3u3, RHEL3u4, and RHEL4. Video playback flicker may occur when changing the size of the video playback

5 window: The video in the playback window of your media player may flicker if the video playback window is resized to a smaller viewing size than the original video clip.
