2 Creation of a Windows 7 Base Image This module will show you how to install and configure an optimized Windows 7 base image for a virtual desktop lab environment. The optimizations are based on the VMware View Optimization Guide for Windows 7, found here: OptimizationGuideWindows7-EN.pdf. 1. Create a new VM, choose the defaults for a Windows 7 installation. 2. Remove the virtual floppy drive. 3. Under the Options -tab of the VM s settings, choose Boot Options and make sure the machine goes into BIOS on next boot. Start the VM and enter BIOS. 2

4 5. Enter Advanced - I/O Device Configuration 4

5 6. Make sure all serial, parallel and floppy devices are disabled: 7. Press F10 to Save and Exit 5

6 8. Install Windows 7 OS on the Windows 7 Template 6

7 9. Enter your password: 7

8 10. Choose Ask me later when asked for the Windows Update setting: 8

9 11. Set the correct timezone: 9

10 12. After installation, set the Windows Update setting to Never check for updates. Instead of patching every single virtual desktop on its own, by setting this we can instead use the function Recompose to update all our virtual desktops in our pool from one single patched base image. 10

11 13. Set the Windows Power plan to Never Put the computer to sleep. We do this so that the virtual desktops will always be ready when a user logs in. Of course, for power saving functions it might be a good idea to actually put the virtual desktops to sleep after a while, but it s up to you. It s your lab environment, after all 14. VERY IMPORTANT! Install a proper Windows 7 license and make sure that you can license the virtual desktop correctly. Failure to do this will end up in problems when provisioning the virtual desktops. 15. Perform Windows 7 Updates if wanted/needed 16. Install VMware Tools on the Windows 7 Base Image 17. Install the VMware View Agent from the installation media Basic Windows 7 installation is now done. The following fine-tuning is completely optional, but highly recommended. 11

12 Fine-tuning the Windows 7 Template for VDI usage 1. Power down the VM, create a snapshot of the VM called Before Fine-tuning. This is to make sure you can always go back to a bsic configuration. Power up the VM again. 2. Run the Commands.bat script to do all the fine-tuning needed automatically. Make sure you run the script as Administrator. 3. Restart the Windows 7 Template VM to make sure the settings have been applied correctly. 4. Power down the VM, create a snapshot of the VM called After Fine-tuning. Power up the VM again. 5. Install applications that you d like to include in the base image, such as Microsoft Office, firefox, Winrar etc. You can of course also use ThinApp to virtualize those or some other applications, and we ll go through that in a later module. 12

13 6. Edit the properties of the virtual machine to disconnect the installation media from the CD/DVD Drive. 7. Power down the VM one last time, and create another snapshot of the VM called Base-image of Windows 7 for View v1.0. This will be the snapshot we ll use to create our virtual desktop replicas from. You are now done with your virtual desktop base image, and are ready to start using it with VMware View in the next module! 13
