1 How to Create a NetBeans PHP Project 1. Create New Project ("PHP Application from Remote Server") Run Netbeans and select "File - New Project" from the menu. Select PHP and "PHP Application from Remote Server", then click Next. 3.

Set Up Permissions for your PHP Web Site Telnet into cis-linux2.temple.edu and run this script (to set up permissions for your PHP web site): /home/admin/scripts/default_web_setup (contents of this script is shown in the appendix if you don't have such a file) 2. Create New Project ("PHP Application from Remote Server") Run Netbeans and select "File - New Project" from the menu. Select PHP and "PHP Application from Remote Server", then click Next. 3. Specify Project Name and Location Select a name for your project. This will create a folder by that same name under "Documents/NetBeansProjects". Click Next. 4. Specify Project URL and Upload Directory Enter the URL for your website into the Project URL box: If you have never created any Remote Connections, there will be none available in the pick list. Click on the Manage button so you can "Create New Connection" window (see next item). 5. Create New Connection Make up a name for your connection, for example "php_linux2", select SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol), and click OK. 2

This should get you an "Authenticity" pop up window followed by a "Connection Succeeded" message. Click OK. 7.

Set the Initial directory to be /home/tu/tua12345 but use your own NetAccess username. Click on the Test Connection button. This should get you an "Authenticity" pop up window followed by a "Connection Succeeded" message. Click OK. 7. Select the New Remote Connection Now that you have created a new connection, select that from the Remote Connection pick list. Enter /public_html into the Upload Directory box, then click Next. Make sure that below the "Upload Directory" you see a folder like the example above (public_html folder under your home folder, using sftp). After possibly getting the "Authenticity" warning, it will say "Please wait, fetching remote files"). After it shows you the files (on the server) that it plans to download to your PC, click "Finish" to start the download. If you see index.html after you download, delete that (so that it does not "mask" the index.php that you plan to create for users who just specify your domain, without specifying index.php at the end of the URL). 3

4 Note: You will not be able to set up your project unless you have at least one file in public_html on the server. You should have a file there, if you ran the startup script, but if not, ftp a simple (text file) with php extension, like the one below. Set Run Configuration: "Upload on Save" and "Preserve Remote File Permissions" Right click on your project name, select "Properties", then "Run Configuration". Make sure that "Upload Files" is set to "On Save". After checking "Preserve Remote File Permissions", click OK. This is a nice way to work it's how I manage my php website. NetBeans automatically uploads to the server every time I save a file. 9. Add a PHP File to Your Project If you don't already have an index.php file under the "Source Files" folder (in the Projects pane of NetBeans), right click on "Source Files", select "New - PHP File", and type in "index". You can add other file names like this also (always use all lower case letters to avoid issues created by the fact that unix file names are case sensitive whereas Windows file names are not). 10. Edit your Php code, Keep It Properly Indented, and Free from Syntax Errors Keep your code properly indented by selecting "Source - Format" from the NetBeans menu. This is critical to your understanding how your code is nested and it is also required for all lab submissions. To remove syntax errors, hover your mouse over the first red dot in the NetBeans editor. It should give you a pretty good error message. Remember to fix errors from top to bottom since lower errors may be caused by an earlier error. 4

If, in the browser, you see a white file instead of what you expected (and there is nothing there when you right click in the browser and "View Source"), then there is a problem with the file permissions. - you probably forgot to set the "Preserve Remote File Permissions" when you set up your project. 1. To fix the file permission, run Secure Shell ftp, locate the file, right click, select properties. Make sure that everyone (owner, group, other) can read, but only you (owner) can write. All of your files (e.g., php, html, css, js, images,...) need to have privileges where everyone can read (not write, not execute). Owner (you) and group can read and write. All of your folders (public_html and under) need to have privileges so that everyone can execute but not read and not write. Owner (you) and group (maybe includes me) can read/write/execute. 2. To fix your project configuration (so that this does not happen when you save files in the future), right click the project name, select "Properties" then "Run Configuration" and specify "upload files on Save" and "preserve file permissions". 5
