4 Introduction The 7.10 release of the PowerSchool Student Information System (SIS) includes new features, enhancements, and resolutions to previously identified issues. Installation Notes The installer setup files for this release are available for download from PowerSource. If you are upgrading from PowerSchool 7.8.x x you will need: PowerSchool 7.10 Application Installer If you are upgrading from PowerSchool 7.0.x through 7.7.x you will need: PowerSchool Database Scripts Updater PowerSchool 7.10 Application Installer If you are performing a new installation, you will need: PowerSchool Database Installer PowerSchool 7.10 Application Installer Note: PowerSchool 7.10 does not support upgrading from PowerSchool 6.x. If your district is using PowerSchool 6.x, you must upgrade to PowerSchool before upgrading to PowerSchool For more information, see the Installation Guide for PowerSchool 7.x available on PowerSource. Note: If Schools Interoperability Framework (SIF) is enabled on your system, an update to the latest SIF adapter is required. 5 Use the PowerSchool installer to manage your PowerSchool deployment. It installs the database and application for a specific server, and it configures per-server settings such as database and web server ports, passwords, and file paths. PowerSchool System Requirements If this is the first time you are installing PowerSchool, review the Hardware and Software Requirements for PowerSchool 7.10.x and the Installation Guide for PowerSchool 7.10.x, available on PowerSource, before installing this version of PowerSchool. The Hardware and Software Requirements for PowerSchool 7.10.x are updated periodically, and contain information on supported software and browser versions for a release. Review this document before installing updates to PowerSchool. General Recommendation Pearson strongly recommends that you check to make sure Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is enabled on your PowerSchool server to ensure all data passed between your server and end users/pearson Technical Support remains secure and private. If SSL is not enabled, data moving between your server and end users is unencrypted. PowerSchool Components PowerSchool is comprised of several software components, each versioned independently from one another. This allows for greater flexibility of component updates as new features and bug fixes become available. Some updates may include dependencies between components. These dependencies will be communicated and built in to the component update installers to prevent PowerSchool from being configured incorrectly. 9 What s New in PowerSchool 7.10 PowerSchool 7.10 includes new features that have been highly requested by customers, including database extension management and custom field data migration enhancements, multiple user role and group management, course availability and health enhancements, repeated course grade suppression enhancements, localization support enhancements, and performance improvements. Key Features and Enhancements Option to migrate individual custom fields to database extensions. Ability to assign multiple roles and security groups to users at each school. Enhancements to course availability, health data entry, repeated course grade suppression, and the teacher schedule matrix. Localization Administration enhancements to support localization of PowerScheduler, PowerTeacher, and international date formats. Improvements to overall performance. What s New in PowerSchool

10 Database Extension Enhancements Now in PowerSchool 7.10, you have the ability to migrate individual user-created legacy custom fields to become database extension fields. Also in this release, you have the option to migrate additional PowerSchool custom fields to become database extension fields. Over the course of the next year you will also be able to migrate state- and province-specific custom fields to this new more robust technology. Feature Description Database Extension Enhancements Ability to migrate individual user-created legacy custom fields for the Students, Users, SchoolStaff, Courses, and Sections tables. Additional Pearson core custom field validation report and migration option. Removal of ability to create new legacy custom fields after migration. Family Management: Available Student Fields to Copy now includes database extension fields. Legacy custom fields associated with the Activities and SuccessNet integration will be automatically migrated to become database extension fields and all new Activities will be created in the new database extension format. What s New in PowerSchool

11 Language Toolkit The enhanced functionality provided in this release includes: Feature PowerScheduler Localization PowerScheduler Reports Localization PowerTeacher Gradebook Assignment Categories Localization New International Date Formats Added to Localization Administration Translated PowerTeacher Gradebook Online Help Access Description All static text in PowerScheduler can now be localized using the PowerSchool Localization Administration. All 36 PowerScheduler reports can now be localized and generated for any of the languages/locales installed in your system. The default PowerTeacher Gradebook assignment categories (assignment, quiz, test, project) can now be localized to display in the teacher s selected language. When adding a locale to PowerSchool, two new date formats that can be used: yyyy-mm-dd or yyyy/mm/dd Localized PowerTeacher Gradebook online help can be added as a plug-in. Teachers who access PowerTeacher Gradebook online help will see it displayed in their preferred language when there is a PowerTeacher Gradebook online help plug-in installed for their locale. Note: PowerSchool only provides the PowerTeacher Gradebook online help in English. Each customer site is responsible for providing the localized/translated PowerTeacher Gradebook online help using your own licensed version of RoboHelp. PowerSchool Enhancements The enhanced functionality provided in this release includes: Feature Course Availability Description Course Availability is now enforced so that only Available Courses can be scheduled. This includes enforcement in the following places: PowerScheduler Import Copy Master Schedule What s New in PowerSchool

12 Feature Enhancements to Roles and Security Groups Improvement of Health Data Entry Description PowerSchool now allows multiple Roles and Security Groups to be assigned to users at each school. Administrators can adjust input values for health data entry: Set default values Sorting Inactivate Repeated Course Grade Suppression Additional Policy Configuration allowing for null threshold values and the ability to input more store codes. Editable TermID on the Historical Grades Edit Page when no sectionid is defined. Import and Export Course Equivalencies Report Cards and Object Reports Credit Hours options now exclude grades set as excluded from graduation. Repeated Course Grade Selection School selector now has an option to exclude all grades from calculations from excluded schools. Teacher Schedule Matrix PowerSchool admin users can view a teachers schedule matrix that includes Co-Teacher information and displays only sections that occur on the current day. PowerTeacher portal users can view their own schedule matrix to determine the sections they are teaching on the current day, and Co-Teaching information. What s New in PowerSchool

13 Resolved Issues General Fixes Issue Socket Timeout Errors in PowerTeacher Gradebook Standards Averaging Description When submitting assignment scores for 21 or more distinct assignments in PowerTeacher Gradebook, a Socket Timeout error may appear. This release includes several performance fixes to address these socket timeout errors. Note: Other environmental issues (such as running out of temporary table space, or incorrect data) may still cause PowerTeacher Gradebook to return Socket Timeout errors. Pearson has identified an issue in PowerSchool in which standards grades for a reporting term may be incorrectly averaged in some cases when a multi-level reporting term structure is in place and the same standards are graded for multiple reporting terms. Example: Class with no issue: If a year-long class only has T1, T2, and T3 reporting terms, teachers will not be impacted by this issue, as long as those reporting terms do not overlap. Class with a potential issue: A year-long class with Y1, T1, T2, and T3 reporting terms will potentially be impacted by incorrect averaging if a standard has been graded in both the Y1 term and any of the trimester terms. The T1 averaged grade for a given standard can in some cases include both the T1 and the Y1 grade. This could result in an incorrect average if the standards final grades are different in each reporting term. This issue is now resolved. Resynchronize PowerSchool Standards Score Data Districts that have been impacted by this issue must also run the Resynchronize PowerSchool Standards Score Data special operation to make any corrections. Note that for large districts, this special operation may take several hours to complete, depending on how many sections need to be resynchronized. 1. Important: Ensure that you have a backup of your PowerSchool database. Resolved Issues 13

14 Issue Description 2. Log in to PowerSchool. 3. Navigate to Start Page > System Administrator > Special Operations. 4. Select Resynchronize PowerSchool Standards Score Data from the drop down menu. 5. In the Param 1 field, enter the year in which you need to resynchronize standards data. For example, enter 2013 for the school year. 6. Click Submit. The Resynchronize PowerSchool Standards Score Data special operation is started. The Loading dialog appears. Depending on the size of your district, this may process for several hours. When finished, the following message will appear in the PowerSchool logs: VersionFixes_PSR_14441 Done Note: The data is correct in the PowerTeacher Gradebook and associated tables, so no data is actually lost. This version fix ensures that the correct data in all PowerTeacher tables is correctly reflected in the StandardsGrades table. Note: Teachers who have started using Standards in PowerTeacher Gradebook after having previously entered standards grades in PowerTeacher portal should manually record any portal-based standards grades before this special operation is run. Alerts on Single Day Attendance Attendance Recalculation Interrupts Nightly Process Calendar Slot Reallocated Error Daily Code-to-Day Attendance Views Support Reduced Membership When a class includes students with mixed case names, the student alerts can be misaligned with the wrong student name on the Single Day Attendance page. This issue is now resolved. This issue relates to Knowledgebase article 70978, available on PowerSource. If the nightly attendance recalculation runs past the 12:00-1:00am hour, the PowerSchool nightly process may not take place. This issue is now resolved. The nightly attendance recalculation will no longer prevent the nightly process from running. This release also includes some performance improvements to shorten the time needed for the attendance recalculation. Previous versions of PowerSchool would repeatedly show a Calendar slot reallocated (-1) error in the logs. This issue is now resolved. Some districts require the ability to reduce a student s membership on certain days (for example, Religious holiday) without un-enrolling the student from the school. Certain PowerSchool reports now support calculating reduced membership when using Daily Code-to-Day attendance and a student has been assigned a Daily attendance code setup to be excluded from Membership. ADA/ADM by Student Resolved Issues 14

Disabled Account Status for Parents Exempt Assignments Missing from Quick Lookup LDAP Authentication Limit Page Permissions on Mass Enroll Performance Improvements Plugin Timeout Performance Issues PowerLunch Transactions for Teachers PowerSchool Substitute Login Information Not Case Sensitive Unable to Localize District When a parent account becomes disabled, an administrator is unable to toggle the Disabled Account checkbox for that parent account if that administrator authenticates via LDAP. This issue is now resolved. Assignments with a custom exempt score do not appear on Quick Lookup. This issue is now resolved. Previous versions of PowerSchool would limit the number of simultaneous LDAP authentication requests to 10 per server. In larger districts, this may result in failed logins during peak login times if more than 10 users attempted to sign in via LDAP simultaneously. This issue is now resolved. Administrators may now increase the number of simultaneous LDAP authentication requests to be processed per server on the LDAP Directory Setup page. When navigating the Mass Enroll group function, no error would be displayed for users who had limited page permissions for this page. This issue is now resolved. Various performance improvements are now available throughout PowerSchool. When a plugin session times out, the time-out process can take several minutes under certain conditions. Under peak usage times, this can result in degraded performance especially when multiple plug-ins are enabled. This issue is now resolved and the plugin session timeout has been optimized. When charging a meal to a teacher who has multiple school affiliations, the lunch transaction is always associated to the first school on the teacher s list of school affiliations. This issue is now resolved. Meal transactions for a teacher are now associated with the proper SchoolStaff record for that teacher. If the teacher eats lunch at a school with no affiliation, the meal transaction will be related to the teacher s SchoolStaff record for the teacher s home school. When a substitute teacher signed in to the PowerSchool Substitute portal, case sensitivity of the login information was not strictly enforced. This issue is now resolved. When localizing the District label in PowerSchool, administrators would see an Invalid grade level Resolved Issues 15

16 Issue Description specified error when submitting student record changes at the district office. This issue is now resolved. Districts should now be able to localize the District label (for example, to LEA) without encountering this error. State Reporting Arizona State Reporting Updates PowerSchool 7.10 includes Arizona state-specific updates. For more information, see Arizona state-specific release notes available on PowerSource. Tennessee State Reporting Updates PowerSchool 7.10 includes Tennessee state-specific updates. For more information, see Tennessee state-specific release notes available on PowerSource. State Reporting Platform The student selection input parameter for a student based report no longer defaults to all students if the current student selection is blank. Teachers can now submit reports under the "Additional" tab within PowerTeacher when there are pre-registered students in their classes. The main part of a downloaded report's file name will no longer be cut off at 74 characters maximum by PowerSchool. However, client browser and operating system restrictions on file name size will continue to apply. If a date parameter is configured properly in the report, and the user leaves the date input field blank, then the date on which the report actually runs will now be substituted as the parameter value. Resolved Issues 16

17 Known Issues The following known issue is introduced in this release: PowerSchool includes performance improvements for the nightly attendance recalculation process, offloading attendance recalculations to Oracle instead of the application. While this change improves performance and prevents long-running attendance recalculations from blocking the nightly process, this also causes the following completion message to appear in the logs before the attendance recalculation is actually complete: [Task Master] INFO PSLog - Attendance recalculation completed This issue will be addressed in a subsequent PowerSchool release.
