1 PDx-Pop 4 Operation from an Intel Fortran-Compatible Desktop Shortcut William J. Bachman, Ph.D. Director, Pharmacometrics R&D ICON Development Solutions Original Document Date: May 21, 2010 Overview: Setting the global environment variables for Intel Visual Fortran compilers using Microsoft Visual Studio has become overly burdensome for PDx-Pop users (and PDx-Pop customer support). This document describes creating a Desktop Shortcut based on a DOS Command Prompt window modified to have the same Intel Fortran compatibility as the Intel Fortran Build Environment window. A batch file will be created that will be run by the Desktop Shortcut to set the environment for Intel Fortran and launch PDx-Pop 4. The following instructions were created on a system with Windows XP (32-bit version), Intel Visual Fortran version 11.0 and an AMD Turion64 CPU. Similar instructions with minor changes should work for other versions of Windows (Vista, Windows 7) and other Intel compiler versions. Procedure: 1. The Intel compiler (and Microsoft Visual Studio) should be installed first. Some versions of the Intel Fortran compiler are bundled with Visual Studio and the compiler installer will install both products. Other versions of the Intel Fortran compiler may require separate installation of Visual Studio or other Microsoft build tools. 2. Next install PDx-Pop 4 and any other programs it will use that are not already installed. This includes Microsoft Office, S-Plus or R. The user may either wait until the PDx-Pop 4 Desktop Shortcut is created to install NONMEM 7 at the PDx-Pop 4 configuration step or install NONMEM 7 now from the Intel Fortran Build environment window (either method will give equivalent results for NONMEM 7 installation). 3. Create a batch file in the PDx-Pop 4 installation directory (usually C:\pdxpop4 if you used the default directory) named PDxPop4.bat. This can be done from My Computer by going to the C:\pdxpop4 directory and using File > New > Text Document and then renaming the resulting New TextDocument.txt file in the My Computer window to PDxPop4.bat. 2 4. Open the empty file for editing in Notepad. 5. The next step will be to get the information needed for the PDxPop4.bat file that will be used to set the environment and to start PDx-Pop 4. The information to set the environment is found in the Program menu entry for the Intel Fortran Build Environment. In this example, the menu trail is All Programs > Intel Software Development Tools > Intel Fortran Compiler > Fortran Build Environment for applications running on IA-32. Right-click on the Fortran Build Environment for applications running on IA-32 entry and then move your mouse to the Properties entry. Page 2 of 11

3 Left-click the Properties entry to open the Properties Window. Copy the information found in the Target entry to your PDx-Pop4.bat file which you have open in Notepad. The information, in this example, is C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe /K ""C:\Program Files\Intel\Compiler\11.0\066\fortran\Bin\ifortvars.bat" ia32". Page 3 of 11

4 Close the Properties window after copying the information to Notepad. Edit this entry in Notepad to read as follows: call C:\Program Files\Intel\Compiler\11.0\066\fortran\Bin\ifortvars.bat" ia32 [The entry no longer refers to cmd.exe but uses call to call the ifortvars.bat and may or may not have an argument such as ia32. There should be only one set of quotes in the entry as above.] Add a second line in quotes to call the PDxPop4.exe executable using a complete path: C:\pdxpop4\PDxPop4.exe Save the PDx-Pop4.bat file and close Notepad. 5 6. The next step is to create a Desktop Shortcut named PDxPop4 to run PDxPop4.bat that will set the environment and launch PDx-Pop4. Create the Desktop Shortcut by finding the Command Prompt on the Windows menu. The menu trail, in this example, is All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. Right-click on Command Prompt then move your mouse to Send To and then to Desktop (Create Shortcut) and left-click the item to create a Desktop Shortcut icon named Command Prompt on your Desktop. 7. Right click on Command Prompt icon, move your mouse to the Rename entry and left click it to rename the icon from Command Prompt to PDxPop4 in the box at the bottom of the icon. Page 5 of 11

6 8. Right click on the newly renamed PDxPop4 icon, move your mouse to the Properties entry and left click it to open the PDxPop4 Properties window. Edit the Target entry on the Shortcut tab to access the PDxPop4.bat file that we created. In this example, the entry is: C:\pdxpop4\PDxPop4.bat Click the OK button to save the new entry and close the Properties window. 9. The PDxPop4 Desktop Shortcut icon may now be used to launch PDx-Pop 4. If this is the first time PDx-Pop has been launched after installation, the PDx-Pop configuration process will be initiated as described in the PDx-Pop 4 manual and the readme.pdf file found on the distribution CD-ROM. After the configuration process is completed, PDx- Pop will directly launch thereafter anytime you use the PDxPop4 Desktop Shortcut icon to start PDx-Pop 4 (the configuration process will only run the first time the shortcut is used). 7 Note 1: This PDxPop4 Desktop Shortcut must ALWAYS be used to run PDx-Pop 4 if the global environment variables are not set for Intel Visual Fortran and Microsoft Visual Studio. Note 2: If the PDxPop4 Desktop Shortcut method is used to run PDx-Pop 4 an additional Window will also be launched like the following window image (and will also close) when PDx- Pop 4 is closed. 8 The following images represent the continuation of the configuration process as seen when done via the first run of PDx-Pop Desktop Shortcut method and are similar (if not identical to those found in the PDx-Pop 4 manual for normal configuration of PDx-Pop 4 with Intel Visual Fortran and NONMEM 7 installation done via the PDx-Pop NMInstaller during PDx-Pop 4 configuration). They are included just for completeness of the PDxPop4 Desktop Shortcut process documentation. For more details on configuration, see the PDx-Pop 4 manual.
