She has taken on the responsibilities as the Business Reference Librarian and is available to help patrons with their research needs. She is originally from Maryland where she earned her BA and MLS from the University of Maryland. As she tells it, after working for twenty-five years as a librarian I followed my husband to Florida where I became a Network Manager in an elementary school. Leaving Florida, she has relocated to Williamsburg where she is close to family. She is delighted to be part of the McLeod Business Library and the College of William and Mary. As she said, while not working in the library, I write for children and have a book out with Random House/Delacorte Press, as well as various articles, stories and poems in magazines. Morningstar Direct has New Update The Morningstar Direct database has received a new update that changes almost every feature included in the program. The database offers its users direct access to investment statistics across multiple data universes. It is designed for institutional investment research. In addition to

2 investment data on U.S. open-end mutual funds, separate accounts, and variable annuity investments, Morningstar Direct also features broadly expanded data covering several additional investment types. In addition to its U.S. data, Morningstar Direct also has data on approximately 25,000 European mutual funds, including 10,000 offshore funds, enabling users to conduct research across global markets. Morningstar Direct also has data on hedge funds, exchange-traded funds and closed-end funds. Accessing Morningstar Direct This program is available to all McLeod Business Library patrons. Patrons may access it by using one of the computer workstations in the McLeod Business Library or the Acuff Financial Markets Center, both of which are in Alan B. Miller Hall. The database is installed on the individual computers in these centers and is not available remotely. The patron must come into the Business Library or Financial Markets Center in order to use this database. Using Morningstar Direct Each computer in the McLeod Business Library has the Morningstar Direct program installed. There is an icon on the desktop of each workstation. After opening the program you will see a login screen. A user ID and Password are needed. This information is located in each workstation in the Business Library. If you need assistance please contact a member of the Business Library staff. Once you are logged in you will be presented with the Home page. The Home page has a menu bar across the top of the page and a menu column on the left side of the page. Both of these are used to access the data in the database. Data is displayed in the main section of the screen. You may conduct a search to find information or you may use the menu column to go directly to a specific section. One of the major changes is that Morningstar has stopped using aggregates and now uses accounts wherever aggregates had been used previously. This is most evident in the Portfolio Management section, which previously had an Aggregates selection. That section now has Account and Account Groups selections. Search There are three types of searches available. You may use the Search For data field in the header menu bar, or the Basic Search and Advanced Search features located in the New selection in the menu bar. The header search function will search in securities only. The Basic and Advanced searches allow you to search in many more areas, including open-end and closed-end funds, hedge funds, portfolios, trusts and more. The results of the searches are displayed in the Search Criteria selection of the Workspace section of the menu column. Company Page

3 Companies that are included in search results lists may have extensive information displayed by clicking on the company name. Company information is displayed on the Company page. The Company page has information in the following categories: Company Profile, Industry Peers, News, Analysis, Performance, Insider Information, Financials, Valuation/Estimates, Key Ratios, Ownership, Charts and customizable reports. Morningstar Menu Column The Morningstar Direct program has a menu column that gives you access to the various areas of the database. These are: Home (with ten selections), Research, Local Databases, Global Databases, Performance Attribution, Performance Reporting, Asset Allocation, Portfolio Management, Portfolio Analysis, Fund Flows, Presentation Studio, and Workspace. The Home section includes some selections for training. Morningstar Direct has a certification program in the training area. Patrons may use this program to gain experience in using the database. Each area in the Morningstar Direct program has numerous lists that are either provided by Morningstar or have been created by other users. Once a list has been created, all users logged into Morningstar Direct will have access to that information. The Workspace section is where most of the user created materials (lists, portfolios, search results, etc.) are stored. It has nine selections under it (Investment Lists, Search Criteria, Report Templates, Chart Templates, Data Sets, Custom Database, Defined Contribution Plans, Saved Reports, and Note Manager). User Guide A user guide for this database is available in the Business Library and also electronically on the Business Library web site databases page ( Undergrads with a Business Major Now Have Remote Access to the Business Library Databases A recent development in the ongoing efforts to improve the services provided by the McLeod Business Library has been the inclusion of our undergraduate patrons to the ranks of those who may access the Business Library s databases remotely. All Mason School of Business undergraduate students who have a business major have been given access to the Business Library database server. This gives them equal access with the Business School graduate students, faculty and staff. Using the process provided in the following article (Remote Access to Business Library Databases) undergraduates may now set up their personal computers so that they can use the Business Library s electronic research resources without having to come into the Library during our business hours. People using remote access can use the databases wherever they may be. They do not have to be in the Business School building or even on campus. This should be a great help to the undergraduate population of the Mason School of Business.

4 If you need help setting up your computer with the Remote Desktop Connection program please contact the Library Technician at the McLeod Business Library or ) or the Mason School of Business IT office ( ). Remote Access to Business Library Databases The following procedures may be used to connect to the Phoenix server and access the Business Library databases from any location. Note: You must have Remote Desktop Connection installed on your computer in order to connect to the Phoenix server. Computers with the Windows XP, Vista or 7 operating systems already have this program installed as part of the Windows program. Note: You may check to see if you have this program by clicking on the Start button. Click on Run to open the Run window. Type mstsc into the Open data field and click on the OK button. This will open the Remote Desktop Connection window. Note: MAC users. See the end of this article for information about a Remote Desktop Connection program for Mac. Remote Desktop Connection Set Up To set up Remote Desktop Connection so that there is an icon on your desktop for easy connection, follow these steps: 1. Click on the Start button. 2. Click on Run. 3. Type mstsc into the Open data field and click on the OK button. 4. This opens the Remote Desktop Connection window. 5. Click on the Options button. Note: There are several versions of Remote Desktop Connection. One has two data fields with the various tabs and one has four data fields. Follow the instructions below for the various types of programs. 6. For Remote Desktop Connection with two data fields (this version cannot be set up for automatic logon, your password will have to be entered each time you log on): a. Ensure the General tab with the Logon settings section is displayed. b. In the Computer: data field, enter phoenix.mason.wm.edu without the quotation marks. c. In the User Name: data field, enter your user name (i.e., FirstName.LastName). d. Click on the check box next to Allow me to save credentials. e. You now must save this set up so it can be used more than once. To save it as an icon on your desktop, click on the Save As button.

5 f. In the Save As window, select Desktop from the selections in the drop down menu in the Save In data field. g. In the File Name: data field, type in a name for your icon (i.e., Phoenix). h. Click on the Save button and an icon should appear on your desktop. i. After the icon appears on your desktop, double click on the icon. Note: You may receive a warning window that the publisher of Remote Desktop Connection cannot be identified (even though it is a Microsoft product). If so, click on the check box for the line Don t ask me again for remote connections to this computer so that a check mark appears in the check box. Click on the Connect button. This window should not appear again. j. A logon screen should appear with your name already entered in the User Name data field. Enter your password in the Password data field. The Log on to data field should have business entered. Undergrad students must change this to campus. k. Click on the OK button. The Phoenix desktop should appear after the logon. Note: The Phoenix desktop will appear similar to the regular Windows desktop but will have a blue background. It will cover your desktop. This desktop will have its own Start button. l. Click on the Business Library Databases icon on the new desktop to open the Business Library Databases screen. m. The Business Library Databases screen will list all the databases available. Clicking on one of the database selections will open the database. 7. For Remote Desktop Connection with four data fields (this version of the program will allow automatic logon each time you use Phoenix): a. Ensure the General tab with the Logon settings section is displayed. b. In the Computer: data field, enter phoenix.mason.wm.edu without the quotation marks. c. In the User Name: data field, enter your user name (i.e., FirstName.LastName). d. In the Password: data field, enter your password. e. In the Domain: data field, enter business without the quotation marks. Undergrads must enter campus without the quotation marks. f. Click on the check box next to Save my password below the Domain data field. g. You now must save this set up so it can be used more than once. To save it as an icon on your desktop, click on the Save As button. h. In the Save As window, select Desktop from the selections in the drop down menu in the Save In data field. i. In the File Name: data field, type in a name for your icon (i.e., Phoenix). j. Click on the Save button and an icon should appear on your desktop.

6 k. After the icon appears on your desktop, double click on the icon and the Phoenix desktop should appear after the automatic logon. Click on the Business Library Databases icon on the new desktop to open the Business Library Databases screen. m. The Business Library Databases screen will list all the databases available. Clicking on one of the database selections will open the database. For MAC Users Microsoft has a Remote Desktop Connection program for Mac users. To get this program do the following: 1. Go to 2. Click on the Downloads selection in the header. 3. On the Downloads page browse for downloads at the bottom of the page and select Remote Desktop. The download selections will be displayed in the column next to the selection list. 4. Click on the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac selection. Follow the instructions in the details column. New Serials in the Business Library The McLeod Business Library has added new serials to the reference collection. Please refer to the gray section, New Serials in the Business Library, below for a listing of these items. All of these serials were published by Euromonitor International, Ltd. The first new serial is Consumer Americas This book is a compendium of Pan-American market information. It includes the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. The market coverage includes alcoholic drinks, beauty and personal care, consumer appliances, consumer health, fresh food, home care, packaged food and much more. The book is divided into five sections: Introduction, Socio-Economic Parameters, Consumer Markets, Market Growth Rankings, and Country Snapshots. Retail Trade International is an in-depth review and analysis of retail trade across the world. It summarizes key trends and developments within each of the major economies around the world. Data and analysis are provided in 52 countries in the following areas: Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Americas, Asia-Pacific, Australasia, and Africa and Middle East. Each country is analyzed in the following areas: retailing, hypermarkets, supermarkets, convenience stores, mixed retailers, health and beauty retailers, furniture and furnishings, vending, Internet retailing and much more.

7 Offering a wealth of data on the lifestyles of consumers in 76 countries the World Consumer Lifestyles Databook 2011 is another new addition to the Business Library s reference collection. This book segments consumers by their income and expenditure, household profiles, eating, drinking and smoking habits and many more categories. The data is presented in two sections: World Lifestyle Trends and Country Snapshots. The data is displayed in table form in both sections. Data are shown in terms of U.S. dollars, percentage of total and per capital figures in most cases for ease of comparison. Much of the data is available in 11-year time series presentations. World Consumer Income and Expenditure Patterns 2012 features detailed statistics on income distribution and spending habits in 71 major world economies. The data is divided into 15 sections: Introduction, Socio-Economic Parameters, Annual Household Income, Annual Per Capita Income, Tax & Social Security, Annual Gross Earnings, Annual Gross Income by Source, Gini Coefficient, Annual Disposable Income by Sex, Household Disposable Income by Decile, Household Annual Disposable Income Brackets, Consumer Expenditure, Consumer Expenditure by Commodity, Consumer Expenditure by Purpose, and Country Snapshots. The last of these new serials is The Future Demographic: Global Population Trends and Forecasts to This book offers detailed statistics on substantial changes in the demographic structure of the world. The data are divided into five sections: Regional Overviews, Age Structure of the Population at a Glance, Rankings, Cross-Country Comparisons, and Country Data. The book focuses on seven geographic regions (Asia Pacific, Australasia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Middle East and Africa, North America, and Western Europe) and examines in detail 74 major countries, selected by size of the economy as well as population.
