5 Pre-Installation Information Pre-Installation Information Supported versions are the currently actively tested versions of technologies used to deploy Open Plan. Except for the Deltek Integrated Products, these technologies are not directly supported by Deltek. Changes to these technologies occur at the discretion of the individual technology vendors. Compatible versions are the recent previously supported and tested technologies used to deploy Open Plan. These are not actively being tested but are believed to be compatible with Open Plan. Deltek does not recommend these technologies for new deployments but will make its best effort to answer questions concerning these technologies. These technologies may not be available for troubleshooting at Deltek. For a complete list of the recommended minimum software requirements, see the Deltek Product Support Compatibility Matrix document that you can download from the Deltek Customer Care Connect site. The data source providers to use for each database type are listed below. Compare your custom work to the new functionality being provided in this release. If this new version possesses the functionality contained in your custom work, these custom programs may no longer be needed. If the functionality contained in your custom work is not provided in this release, you must ensure that the custom work remains intact through the upgrade process. Identify any hot fixes or patches that you plan to deploy with your Open Plan upgrade. Ensure that, following the hot fix or patch deployment, you retain all custom functionality. Deltek strongly recommends that when upgrading, you first deploy an instance of Open Plan in your test environment. This allows for functional UAT (User Acceptance Testing) to ensure that all mission-critical custom features are still available to the user community. Typical deployments call for a day test period before upgrading into your production environment. Deltek s Technical Services team is available to support you as you plan for this upgrade. We offer both technical and custom services, ensuring the best possible Deltek experience. If you would like consulting assistance, contact your Deltek account representative. Running Custom Applications That Use Open Plan Automation Custom applications that use Open Plan Automation work with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Open Plan with the following conditions: A 32-bit custom application first tries to connect to a 32-bit version of Open Plan. If the 32-bit version of Open Plan is not available, the application connects to the 64-bit version of Open Plan. If both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Open Plan are installed on the same computer, a 32-bit custom application will only work on the 32-bit version of Open Plan. A 64-bit custom application first tries to connect to a 64-bit version of Open Plan. If the 64-bit version of Open Plan is not available, the application connects to the 32-bit version of Open Plan. If both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Open Plan are installed on the same computer, a 64-bit custom application will only work on the 64-bit version of Open Plan. Deltek recommends that you only install one version of Open Plan on a machine if you plan to use custom applications that use Open Plan Automation. Release Notes 5

9 New Features and Enhancements New Features and Enhancements Microsoft Project Server Import/Export Import Open Plan now allows you to import project data from Project Server. You can use the Microsoft Project Import Wizard to import the data. Choose to import from Microsoft Project Standard/Professional or Project Server Export When you export data to Microsoft Project, you can now specify whether the system should use Microsoft Project Standard/Professional or Microsoft Project Server to perform the export. If you don t have a licensed version of MSP installed, you will need to import from Microsoft Project Server. See the Limitations When Using Project Server Directly for Import/Export below. In addition, if you choose to update an existing project, you can decide whether to update status only on existing MSP activities and add new MSP activities, or update status on existing MSP activities only. 10 New Features and Enhancements Limitations When Using Project Server Directly for Import/Export When Importing From Project Server Project Server does not support external subprojects so you will not see or be able to import any project that has external subprojects. Calendar shift, working-day hours, and work weeks are not available so you may see differences in calculated dates and floats between MS Project Server and Open Plan. Resource time-phasing information is not available so the total work is loaded with a linear spread over the activity. When a note contains special characters, it gets truncated before the first special character. The resource type (work, material, or cost) is not available. We try to identify what type a resource is by other means. Although a resource may have multiple availability entries in MS Project Server, this information is not available. Open Plan creates a single availability record based on the availability fields present on the resource record. Relationship lags are not available and display as 0 in Open Plan. When Exporting to Project Server Calendar limitations: Local (non-enterprise) calendars cannot have an enterprise base calendar. If you export a calendar through MSP to MS Project Server that has the same name as an existing enterprise calendar, you will get an error in the log file. Calendar shift, working-day hours, and work weeks cannot be set. Calendars cannot be assigned to tasks or resources. EVM (Earned Value Method) cannot be specified for tasks. The task Type field cannot be set. Open Plan does specify a Fixed Duration default task type for the project. Resource time-phasing information cannot be set. Release Notes 7

11 New Features and Enhancements Notes limitations: Task notes may be assigned when the task is created, but task notes may not be subsequently added or modified. Resource notes cannot be created or modified from Open Plan. The WBS field is read-only so it cannot be set, both for new and existing tasks. The resource type (work, material, or cost) cannot be set for non-enterprise (local) resources. Although a resource may have start and end availability dates, it is not associated with a collection of multiple availability records. Relationship lags are not available. Assignment data cannot be changed after the assignment has been created, but Open Plan can delete and recreate the assignment. The Task Actual Duration field is read-only. Task baseline fields (Baseline Start and Baseline Finish) are read-only. General Task, resource, and project custom fields may be created within the Project Server environment. Open Plan imports and exports task and resource custom fields, but not project custom fields. User fields that are specific to MSP (for example, TEXT1, NUMBER1, and so are) are not available. If you export the same project twice in rapid succession to MS Project Server (either directly or through a local copy of MS Project), the server may reject the second export if it has not finished processing the first. Typically, the error message indicates that the project cannot be checked out. If you wait a few minutes, you should be able to export the project again. If you are using a local copy of MS Project, you can verify that the first export has not completed by bringing up the browse dialog box in MSP for Project Server projects. The cache status for the project will be check-in pending if the first export is still processing requests to the server. Log Viewer The Log Viewer now displays as a docked window at the bottom of the Open Plan screen. You can open and close the window by clicking Open Log in the Log Viewer menu group on the Processes tab, Integration tab, or Tools tab. The Log Viewer includes one tab for every log file that is open. You can close a tab by clicking the X on the right side of the tab. If you close a tab and close and reopen the Log Viewer, the tab that you closed displays again. You can drag and drop the tabs to rearrange their order. The order will remain even if you close and reopen the Log Viewer but will revert to the original order when you log out of and back into Open Plan. When you open a previously saved log file, the tab created for the opened log file displays the log file s name and displays until you log out of and back into Open Plan. Release Notes 8

13 New Features and Enhancements Deleting a Row In the previous release, when you deleted an entry on one of the Manage or Custom Fields dialog boxes, the focus would return to the top of the list. Now when you delete a row, the focus moves to the next row (or previous row if deleting the last row in the table). Insert and Delete Keyboard Keys You can now use your keyboard Insert and Delete keys to add or delete an entry. When you want to add a new record, you can click the New button or press Insert on your keyboard and when you want to delete a record, you can click the Delete button or press Delete on your keyboard. Architecture Enhancements Open Plan includes the following architecture enhancements: In addition to 32-bit, Deltek now offers a 64-bit version of Open Plan to provide better performance on bigger networks. Open Plan now supports a 64-bit version of EPM Security Administrator. Ribbon Menu Updates Open Log The Log Viewer now displays as a docked window at the bottom of the Open Plan screen. You can open and close the window by clicking Open Log in the Log Viewer menu group on the Processes tab, Integration tab, or Tools tab. For more information, see Log Viewer. Change Mode In addition to being on the Processes tab in the Dialogs menu group, the Change Mode command has now been added to the Edit tab in the Dialogs menu group. This command allows you to change the access mode of a file you have open. The choices available depend on the mode in which the file is currently open. For example, a file currently open in Shared mode can only be changed to Read Only mode. Baselines In addition to being on the Processes tab in the Dialogs menu group, the Baselines command has now been added to the Edit tab in the Dialogs menu group. Baselines provide a "snapshot" of project status by storing a complete set of project data for a specific point in time. Open Plan allows you to store multiple project baselines so that you can maintain a historical record of changes over the life of a project. Clicking this command displays a Baselines dialog box where you can select a baseline from a list of baselines already included in the project file. Release Notes 10

14 New Features and Enhancements API Updates Restore From Backup A new RestoreFromBackup method allows you to programmatically perform backup and restore of files. For more information about this method, see the Deltek Open Plan Developer s Guide. Shared Mode Locking In Open Plan 8.0, we provided the ability to apply a temporary exclusive lock on a project to perform processes (such as Time Analysis, Resource Scheduling, Risk Analysis, Cost Calculations, and Progress Calculations) and save changes without obligating other users to exit shared mode. In this release, we are providing access to this feature through the Open Plan OLE Automation interface (API). Two new methods have been added: SetSharedModeLock Method This method sets or clears a shared mode lock for the specified OPProject object. GetSharedModeLock Method This method gets the shared mode lock state for the specified OPProject object. Both of these methods apply to the OPProject object. For more information about this method, see the Deltek Open Plan Developer s Guide. Release Notes 11

15 New Features and Enhancements ScheduleDriverAnalysis The Schedule Driver Analysis feature (Processes tab» Tools menu group) allows you to determine the most critical paths to any point in a project. Open Plan now allows you to use this feature through OLE automation using the ScheduleDriverAnalysis Method. For more information about this method, see the Deltek Open Plan Developer s Guide. EPM SA Enhancements Export Users An Export button has been added to the Properties: Users form, allowing you to export the list of users to a CSV file. The following properties are exported for each user in the list: USR_ID FIRST_NAME LAST_NAME ROL_ID MANAGER ALTMANAGER ADDRESS1 ADDRESS2 CITY STATE COUNTRY ZIP PHONE FAX DESCRIPTION LOCATION DEPARTMENT FILTER COMMENTS DOMAIN In the previous release, you could only print (either send to printer or save as PDF) the user list, which included the user ID, first name, and last name. 19 Software Issues Resolved Software Issues Resolved Add-Ins Defect Description: When you used the Schedule Comparer and you selected Compare multiple baselines within a project, a run-time error '91' : Object variable or With block variable not set displayed and Open Plan closed. Customers Impacted: All Open Plan customers. Defect Description: When you used the Task Form view (on the Add-Ins tab), you could not tell to which project the data related. Customers Impacted: All Open Plan customers. Additional Notes: A project ID and description now displays at the top of the view. Import/Export» MSP Defect Description: During MSP Import, baseline usage records created when a baseline is created or updated in Open Plan have zero values for the RES_USED, RES_CST, and RES_ESC fields. Customers Impacted: All Open Plan customers importing MSP data. Workaround before fix: When you import an MSP project, set Assignment Granularity to Single Period on the Import Wizard Options page. Defect Description: When you perform an MSP import, MSP s Early Start and Early Finish dates are used instead of the Start and Finish dates. Customers Impacted: All Open Plan customers using MSP data. Defect Description: When elapsed time was expressed as 1 eday (elapsed day) in MSP, it was imported into Open Plan as 2.67 hours (8 hours / 3) instead of 1 day. Customers Impacted: All Open Plan customers using MSP data. Release Notes 16

20 Software Issues Resolved Edit» Resource Details Defect Description: When you entered an invalid value into the grid on the Codes tab of the Resource Details dialog box, no warning message displayed. Customers Impacted: All Open Plan customers. Defect Description: When you selected a cell on the Skills tab grid of the Resource Details dialog box and pressed the Delete key, the active cell moved up. Customers Impacted: All Open Plan customers. Defect Description: The Resource Details dialog box Skills tab grid displayed inconsistent behavior when you deleted cells from the grid. When you deleted a cell in the Proficiency column, the cell in the Skill column was also deleted. However, when you deleted a cell in the Skill column, the cell in the Proficiency column was not deleted. Customers Impacted: All Open Plan customers. Workaround before fix: Delete both cells manually. Edit» Resource Selection Defect Description: You could modify the Skill ID column on the Activity Resource Allocation dialog box. Customers Impacted: All Open Plan customers. Additional Notes: The column is now read-only. Edit» Activity Details Defect Description: The column widths in the grid on the Activity Details dialog box Codes tab were not being saved. Customers Impacted: All Open Plan customers. Additional Notes: Resize the column every time you view the Activity Details dialog box Codes tab. Release Notes 17

21 Software Issues Resolved Project Defect Description: Activities with 0 durations were imported with a 1 day duration. Customers Impacted: All Open Plan customers. Defect Description: Some of the resource assignments in the MSP project had baseline start dates > finish dates. Customers Impacted: All Open Plan customers using MSP data. Project» Baselines Defect Description: 'Update Baseline' for activities that are in-progress or complete was only including the remaining quantity for resources in the baseline. If there were any actuals for the resource they were not included in the updated resource baseline quantities which meant that the baseline resource usage was only an estimate to complete, not an estimate at completion. Customers Impacted: Any Open Plan customers who baseline in progress or completed activities. Additional Notes: 'Update Baseline' for in-progress and completed activities now adds the actual resource usage data (if it exists) for work done and the remaining resource quantity for a more accurate model of the activity resource budget and cost. To maintain the behavior where the baseline contains only the remaining portion of the resource quantity, add the system option _REPLACEBASELINEBUDGETWITHACTUALS to the System» Options» Advanced» Defaults preferences with a value of 0. The value of 0 (zero) effectively disables the use of Actuals to update baseline usage. Removing the preference or setting the value to 1 re-enables the use of actual quantity in the baseline update. File» Print Preview Defect Description: When you select the Fit to Page print option and look at Print Preview for a view, an "Attempted an unsupported operation" error message displays. Customers Impacted: All Open Plan customers using Open Plan 8.0. Workaround before fix: Prior to using Print Preview, uncheck the Fit to Page print option. Release Notes 18

22 Software Issues Resolved Defect Description: Open Plan may freeze and crash when you perform a Print Preview in a Barchart view if the print date range is not set or contains invalid dates. Customers Impacted: All Open Plan customers using Open Plan 8.0. Workaround before fix: Manually specify the set of desired dates in the Print Options dialog box before performing the Print Preview. Views» Histogram View Defect Description: The quantity calculated for resource usage and baseline resource usage may have been incorrect for pool resources. This affected the crosstable export, histogram, and resource scheduling usage-related calculations. Customers Impacted: All Open Plan customers. Additional Notes: This problem may have affected the spreading of resource usage and baseline resource usage quantities and costs on resource assignments to pool resources. Data Tool Defect Description: When you ran the Open Plan Data Tool against a database that included PM Compass data, the Data Tool re-rotated columns that had been unrotated by PM Compass. Customers Impacted: All customers who have PM Compass and Open Plan installed in the same database. Workaround before fix: Un-rotate the fields again after you run the Open Plan Data Tool. Additional Notes: The Data Tool will now prevent you from changing a data source that already has PM Compass data in it. Release Notes 19

23 Known Issues Known Issues The following issues exist in this version and will be resolved in the future. Please contact Deltek Customer Care if they present a significant impact to your business. Export» Project Server Defect Description: When you export using Project Server direct, medium to large-size projects (more than 1,000 tasks) may fail to export correctly when updated. Customers Impacted: All Open Plan customers using Project Server direct export. Defect Description: During a Project Server direct export update, the resource Name field does not get updated, as it does during an indirect update. Customers Impacted: All Open Plan customers using Project Server direct export. Project» Schedule Drive Analysis Defect Description: Incorrect file extensions are created for Milestones Professional reports in Schedule Driver Analysis. Customers Impacted: All Open Plan customers. Release Notes 20

Access Customer Care Connect To access the Customer Care Connect site, complete the following steps: 1. Go to 2. Enter your Customer Care Connect Username and Password. 3. Click Log In. If you forget your username or password, you can click the Account Assistance button on the login screen for help. Deltek Software Manager The Documents tab in Deltek Software Manager lists all of the documents associated with a release and lets you download the ones that you want. To download documents, complete the following steps: Release Notes 22

26 Appendix A: For Additional Information 1. On the Deltek Customer Care site, click the Product Downloads tab, then select Launch Deltek Software Manager. 2. When the Deltek Software Manager opens, highlight a release in the left pane. Do not enter a check next to the release name or click Add to Download Queue. If you do so, you will download the software as well as any documentation that you want. 3. Click the Documents tab to display a list of available documents for the release. 4. Select the documents that you want. 5. Click View Download Queue to see a list of documents that you selected. 6. Click Download. Customer Care Site Enterprise Search Use the search feature to find specific documents or to see a list of all documents associated with a release. Then open or download the ones that you want. To download documents, complete the following steps: 1. On the Deltek Customer Care site, click Enterprise Search. 2. Select Release Documentation as the Source. 3. Perform one of the following actions: To see a list of all available documentation for a release, enter the product and release number (for example, Open Plan 8.1) in the search field. To find a specific document, enter a description of the document (for example, Open Plan 8.1 release notes) in the search field. 4. Click on the document, and then choose to open or save it.
