6 THERMAL PRINTER GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING Nothing Prints Shop Printers Thermal Printer General Troubleshooting Used the wrong printer. Make sure you didn t accidentally send your job to the wrong printer. öömost shop print jobs output to a specific printer, but this is not always the case. Printer is out of labels. Change the roll if necessary. See "Desktop Printers" Manual for Details" on page 42 for details about changing rolls on particular printers. There is a paper/label jam. See "Paper Is Jammed" on page 42 for more details about this. The printer is turned off. Turn the printer on. öösee the Sato photo for the location of its power switch. Check that the power cord is plugged in. The USB cable is unplugged. Make sure the USB cable is completely connected on the printer and on the PC. The network cable is unplugged. Seek IT personnel for assistance. The printer is in Offline state. 1. Click on the computer s Start menu and open Devices and Printers. ööwhen Offline, the printer icon that is listed in Devices and Printers will be grayed out. 2. Find the printer and right-click on it, and then select See what s printing. 3. Click on File and see if Use Printer Offline is enabled, disable it by clicking on it. 4. Click on File again and verify that Use Printer Offline is no longer enabled. 5. Close or hide the printer queue window. 6. Done. Printer is Paused. 1. Follow steps 1 & 2 of "The printer is in Offline state." 2. Click on File and see if Pause Printing is enabled, disable it by clicking on it. 3. Click on File again and verify that Pause Printing is no longer enabled. 4. Close or hide the printer queue window. 5. If Pause Printing does not disable or you get a message that you are not allowed to do that, seek IT personnel for assistance. Printer is acting strange or prints garbled. 1. Unplug/replug the printer and check the print queue. 2. Try printing again. 3. If this fails, see "Specific Troubleshooting" on page 45 for details on how to reset a specific printer. The print queue is backed up. 1. Click on the computer s Start menu and open Devices and Printers. 2. Find the printer and right-click on it, and then select See what s printing. 3. If there is more than one document listed, then the queue is likely stuck. ööconsider your printout to be lost; you will have to reprint. 4. Click on File and select Cancel All Documents. 5. Turn off the printer, wait 10 seconds, and then turn it back on. 6. If the printer is fixed, close or hide the printer queue window. 7. If the printer still does not work, seek IT personnel for assistance. Paper Is Jammed Label is sticking out half-way from the output. Printer may be out of labels. Gap sensor is misaligned. See "Desktop Printers" Manual for Details" on page 42 for details about checking gap sensors on particular printers. A label may have come loose and is stuck to internal workings. Seek IT personnel for assistance. 42 Paper/labels are badly wrinkled inside the printer and/ or wrapped around something inappropriately. Seek IT personnel for assistance.

7 Page Has Streaks Print head is dirty. Use a Thermal Printer Cleaning Pen to clean the dirt off the Print Head. Run it across the Print Line of at least 10 times. See "Example Print Head" on page 43 to identify the Print Line. It may be necessary to CAREFULLY and GENTLY use a finger nail to scrape of some of the dirt. Use a Thermal Printer Cleaning Pen and a paper towel to clean label glue from the Metal Plate. öödo NOT use a Thermal Printer Cleaning Pen to clean the rubber roller. If a rubber roller needs cleaning, seek IT personnel for assistance. Check that there is no label glue or grime stuck to the metal plate. See the printer pictures in "See "Desktop Printers" Manual for Details" on page 43 for the locations of print heads on each type of printer. ööprint heads are flat metal plates with a green & black stripe running across the width. The black stripe is what needs to be cleaned and can be scratched if not careful. Example Thermal Printer Cleaning Pen Example Print Head The Print Line itself gets dirty the most often. It is a very thin portion of the entire Print Head. The Forney tip card printer has a strong tendency to get red ink build-up on the Print Line. Print Head Metal Plate Labels Program Is Misbehaving Dirt/Ink Print Line Shop Printers Thermal Printer General Troubleshooting Prompt for job number, quantity, part number, etc. is not showing. MS Windows likes to hide prompts sometimes. Move or minimize the program's main window out of the way and see if the prompt is now visible. Resume operation. It also may be necessary to kill Bartender and restart the program. See "BarTender has too many copies running or is slow." on page 43 for more details on this. If the prompt still cannot be found, seek IT personnel for assistance. BarTender has too many copies running or is slow. 1. Right-click on the task bar and select Task Manager. 2. Click on the Processes tab. 3. Find bartend.exe *32 on the list and right-click on it and select End Process. Do this for every copy of BarTender found on the list. 4. Restart the printing program. License server is not found, claims to run in trial mode or says it requires registration to continue. Seek IT personnel for assistance. 43

8 INKJET & LASER PRINTER GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING Nothing Prints Not enough paper. Some printers won t pull paper when there are less than 5 sheets. Put in more paper. 4. Click on File again and verify that Use Printer Offline is no longer enabled. 5. Close or hide the printer queue window. Shop Printers Inkjet & Laser Printer General Troubleshooting Used the wrong printer. Make sure you didn t accidentally send your job to the wrong printer. The paper tray is empty. Put paper into the paper tray. ööit may be necessary to press a button after loading paper. This is usually the biggest button on the top of the printer. It may be green or have OK printed on it. There is a paper jam. See "Paper Is Jammed" on page 44 for more details about this. The printer is working, but paper is not being pulled in from the tray. The paper grabbing roller is likely worn out. Seek IT personnel for assistance. The printer is turned off. Turn the printer on. Check that the power cord is plugged in. The USB is unplugged. Make sure the USB cable is completely connected on the printer and on the PC. The network cable is unplugged. Seek IT personnel for assistance. The printer is in Offline state. 1. Click on the computer s Start menu and open Devices and Printers. ööwhen Offline the printer icon that is listed in Devices and Printers will be grayed out. 2. Close or hide the printer queue window. 6. If Pause Printing does not disable or you get a message that you are not allowed to do that, seek IT personnel for assistance. There is nothing available to be printed. Rarely there are times when Global Shop is told to print a report and there is nothing to be reported, yet GS will spit out a blank page or worse GS will do nothing at all. Consider that perhaps your Global Shop report actually has nothing to say. Paper Is Jammed ö ö If possible, please note the brand of paper that jammed. If it is Dunder-Mifflin brand, get another package of paper that is NOT Dunder-Mifflin and replace the paper in the tray with that. Please tell IT personnel that Dunder-Mifflin is being used. This is not a joke. 44

9 Paper is sticking out half-way from the output. Gently and slowly pull the paper out from the output. ööit may be necessary to press a button after clearing the jam. This is usually the biggest button on the top of the printer. It may be green or have OK printed on it. If the printer still does not work, seek IT personnel for assistance. Paper is sticking out half-way from the input. öödo NOT pull the paper directly back out from the input. 1. Open the toner cartridge door and remove the toner. ööthe paper will likely have unheated toner powder on it, in the form of a partial print; this will come off of the paper when touched. 2. Gently and slowly pull the paper out from the toner area. 3. Replace the toner cartridge and close the door. ööit may be necessary to press a button after closing the door. This is usually the biggest button on the top of the printer. It may be green or have OK printed on it. 4. If the printer still does not work, seek IT personnel for assistance. Paper is badly wrinkled inside the printer and/or wrapped around something. Seek IT personnel for assistance. Page Has Streaks If changing the toner cartridge doesn t fix the problem, seek IT personnel for assistance. ööif toner is spilled, DO NOT USE A VACUUM CLEANER to collect it. Toner is old and likely low. Remove the toner cartridge from the printer and, while holding it flat over a trash can, carefully shake it side to side. This can yield about 50 to 100 more pages before changing the toner. If the cartridge has been shaken already, replace it now. There should be a spare toner cartridge near the printer. See "Paper Is Jammed" on page 35 for details on how to change toner. If no replacement toner cartridge is available, see IT personnel for assistance. Toner is new or not very old and may be defective. If the toner cartridge is known to have been changed quite recently and is streaking, then it s probably defective. Change the cartridge if a replacement is handy and tell IT personnel about the defective cartridge. See "How to Change" on page 32 of "Desktop Printers" for details on how to change toner. Seek IT personnel for assistance, if no replacement is available.
