1 Install DV data acquisition and programmable software 1. Insert the CD of DvGather software into your CD-ROM driver 2. Double click the setup icon of DvGather software 3. Follow installation instructions on the screen to complete the installation 4. After the installation is finished, please click the button finish,then the icon of DvGather software will be created on the desktop or [start], [programs] and [DvGather] Application of DV data acquisition and programmable software 1. Double click the icon of DvGather software on the desktop 2. The following image will appear on the screen. Click the icon on the Toolbar or the submenu "Open Sample Windows" under the menu "Data Processd" to open a sampling window. 3. Open the sampling window as shown in above image. Page 1 of 16

2 4. Install the DV series digital viscometer according to the procedure in DV Series Digital Viscometer Operation Instruction. Carry out the steps 1-8 in the Procedure to keep the DV series digital viscometer in measuring status. 5. Be sure that the viscometer and the computer are connected rightly, and the power of the viscometer is turned on. Click the [open] button in the control panel of Dvgather, the computer will try the connection with the viscometer automatically. If the connection is established, [Model], [start to sample] in the [sample] column will be activated. If they are activated, it means: (1) The power has not been turned on, (2) The communication line has not been connected (3) There are some troubles in the connection of the communication line. Please check for above situation. Page 2 of 16

3 Graphic display area Sampled data from the viscometer are displayed in this area selection of the X,Y-axes of the graph Select the serial port to the viscometer connection If the specific port is unkown, click the "open" button, and the software will automatically search the port in connection with the viscometer. The viscometer is connected with the program successfully, the "sample" column is activated. All data from the viscometer are acquired in this sampling mode. In this sampling mode, data from the viscometer are acquired at fixed time. 6. Set experimental parameters. Page 3 of 16

4 Click the menu and Toolbar displayed in the image to set the experimental parameters Click [Reset Experiment Parameter] menu to clear all the experiment parameters. 7. Press the start to sample button to begin viscometer data acquisition. The value and curve appear simultaneously. When sampling begins, the Sample column is disable, as well as the [Start to sample] button. At the same time, the [Stop to sample] button is activated. User can press the [Stop to sample ] button at any time to stop sampling. 8. When sampling is finished, press the stop to sample button to stop data acquisition. 8.Save the sampling curve. 5 Save curve. the Clicking the corresponding menu and icon to prompt the right window. Select an appropriate sample class to save the curve. If there is not appropriate class in current window, click the [create new class] button to create a new sample class. Open a historical data curve Open a historical curve. Select the desired curve, then click the [Load curve] button. Page 5 of 16

6 Graphic Tools 1. Add information Right click the information label to modify the information or delete the information label. User can add some information related with the curve which can be printed directly. Click the button to delete all the label information. Page 6 of 16

7 2. Mark the current value Click the [Mark current value] button, a [M] cursor will appear. Left press the end of the [M] cursor and drag it right or left. A red value will appear on the right of the cursor in realtime, which represents the current X-axis value of the cursor. When the cursor is moved to a certain position, click the Toolbar button as shown in the image. The program will automatically mark the X,Y value of the current point. Left press the label Move it to a new position, release the left button to place the label at a new position. Page 7 of 16

8 3. Mark maximum Click the corresponding menu and Toolbar button, [L] and [R] cursors will appear on the graphic area. Move one of the two cursors to a certain position, click the [Processing curve data] button to mark the maximum between the two cursors 4. Mark minimum Click the corresponding menu and Toolbar button, [L] and [R] cursors will appear on the graphic area. Move one of the two cursors to a certain position, click the [Processing curve data] button to mark the minimum between the two cursors automatically. Page 8 of 16

9 5. Zoom in the graph Left press and drag a dotted line frame from top left to lower right to enclose area to be zoomed in. 6. Zoom out the graph Left press and drag a dotted line frame from top left to lower right to enclose area to be zoomed out. Page 9 of 16

10 7.Restore graph to the last time. The function can restore the data graph to the last step. 8.Shift curve Click the [move curve] command, a cursor as shown will appears on the screen. Left click the curve need to be processed to select it. Shift the cursor up or down and click the [processing curve data] button to achieve the curve shift up or down. The selected curve is displayed in red. Page 10 of 16

11 9. Smooth Curve Click [smooth curve] to prompt a dialog box as shown. Input the times of smoothing. The more times of smoothness is, the curve will be smoother after smoothing. 17. Weed out bad data Click [Weed out bad data]. Two transversal lines, (L) and (R) will appear on the graph. User can click and move the two line. Data fall between the two lines will be reserved; while data outside the two lines will be removed. Click [Processing Curve Data] to weed the data outside the two lines out from the curve automatically. Page 11 of 16

12 18.Setup graphic format Click [set graph parameter] to change any information relevant with the curve. Data management of curves 1.Manage curves Click [manage curve data] to prompt a dialog box as shown. 2. Create class button, enable user to create classes for operator, sample batch, sample name, Page 12 of 16

13 which will facilitate users to find the required sampling curve quickly. 3. Modify class button, enable user to modify the class message has been created. 4. Delete class button, enable user delete the class message has been created. 5. Delete curve button, enable user to delete sampling curve data by clicking the name of the sampling curve to be deleted in the curve frame and then clicking the delete curve button. 6. Modify Curve Information 7. Reset curve to new class, click the class name in the class column at first, then the curve name to be reclassified in the curve column. Click the reset curve to new class button and then the << in the middle to activate it. Click the new class name, then click << to finish the reclassify of the curve. 8. Export curve button, enable user to copy saved sampling curves to a target disk of the user. 9. Import curve button, enable user to import the data in a target disk to the computer. Program 1. Edit Program DV-II+PRO viscometer is a programmable viscometer. DV data acquisition and programmable analysis software provides customer with tens of instruction. Click edit program menu item to prompt the graphical interface below. Renew original program button is unable now, since the serial port has not been opened. After the programmable loader window is opened, user can write the instruction in the edit box in the left of DV programmable offline loader window and press the compile program button after finish the edit to check the compiled program. The failure to pass the check means that there are bugs in the edited program need to be found out. After the compiled program passes the check, press download program button to download it to the DV series digital viscometer. Page 13 of 16

14 Click Renew original program button to erase the custom program; then the viscometer will be operated manually as factory defaults, instead of follow user's program commands. If a custom program has been loaded in the viscometer, the viscometer will be in a status of running the custom program once the (measure/run) key is pressed. Any key on the panel, except the (reset), are unable at this moment. Descriptions of DV Program Commands 1. WTI+second: program pause time 2. WPT+%: set torque. After the torque has been set, program will wait until the torque reach the set value to execute the next command. 3. WTD+%: wait torque. After the torque has been set, program will wait until the torque is lower than the set value to execute the next command. 4. WTA+%: set torque. After the torque has been set, program will wait until the torque is higher than the set value to execute the next command. 5. WTP+temperature: The program will not execute the next command until the designated temperature is reached. 6. SSN+rotary speed: set rotary speed. 7. STM+temperature: set temperature. 8. SSI+velocity increment: set velocity increment. 9. STI+temperature increment: set temperature increment. 10. PDN: make printer output a set of data immediately. 11. GAA: alarm. When some of above commands have been finished, the subsequent command needs the confirmation of user. It is required that user press a key on the viscometer. 12. SSP+spindle number: remind to change spindle. 13. SPT+times of acquisition: allow the spindle rotate for several circles at current rotary speed without sampling. This command is mainly intended to avoid reading unstable data. 14. CST+time (second): continuously collect data for T second and then execute the next command. 15. CSN+times of acquisition: continuously collect data N times and then execute the next command. 16. Repeat+N: support single loop. Begin the loop and execute the command immediately after the loop for N times. Page 14 of 16

15 17. End Repeat: end of single loop. 18. CAN+N: continuously sample for N times and take the average as an output value. Above combinations of command can be used to achieve automatic control of viscosity measurement and carry out data acquisition. Practical application of DV programmable control offline loader Example 1: A sample needs the following procedure: heat the sample to 160 o C; keep it under that temperature for 30 minute; collect data for 10 times; heat it to 170 o C; keep it under that temperature for 30 minute; collect data for 10 times; heat it to 180 o C; keep it under that temperature for 30 minute; collect data for 10 times; and constant temperature 30 minute, and end with an alarm. Following program is edited according to above procedure: wtp 160 repeat 2 wti 1800 csn 10 sti 10 end repeat gaa //Wait until the temperature reaches 160 o C //keep the temperature for 30 minutes //Collect data for 10 times //Adjust the temperature setting 10 o C upward //End with an alarm Repeat 2 means that the program segment will be repeated for 2 times, end repeat means the end of program segment, and gaa means alarm reminder. Example 2: A non-newtonian fluid needs an initial rotary speed of 10 r/m, 5 times data acquisition for each set of data, and speed increment of 5 r/m. Therefore, the procedure will be: collect data for 5 times at 10 r/m; increase the rotary speed to 15 r/m; collect data for 5 times; increase the rotary speed to 20 r/m; collect data for 5 times; repeat the operation until the rotary speed is up to 90 r/m and end with an alarm after 5 times of data acquisition. ssn 10 //Set the initial speed at 10 RPM repeat 16 spt 2 //Data are unstable at the moment of rotary speed alteration. 16 1. The computer and DV series digital viscometer has been connected. 2. The configuration of COM communication port is right. 3. DV series digital viscometer is opened. 4. After the program has been downloaded to the DV series digital viscometer, Press the exit button and disconnect the communication line. 5. Press the (reset key) on the panel of the DV series digital viscometer; select code No. of the spindle; press the (measure) key. Then the DV series digital viscometer will run the individual custom program automatically. 2. Open program Open an existing program command. Technical analysis Click the menu item Analysis to select an appropriate computation model. Following form will be prompted. Click Processing Curve Data button to calculate the parameters of current selected curve, such as shear stress, plastic viscosity, consistency index, liquidity index. Thanks Page 16 of 16
